More Coronavirus Signs and Situations Again

The Pandemic is winding down which means less bizarre coronavirus signs and situations will be seen in public. Thankfully I have a few leftovers to share with you.

With the vaccination program in full swing one of the most common signs to be seen is one letting customers know all employees are fully vaccinated.

"All-vaxxed to take care of you." Do these people not realize that despite being fully vaccinated and boosted that they can still transmit the virus to me? Maybe the "to take care of you" is a euphemism. But the virus has a 97% survival rate so even if these workers at Greenwich did infect me I'd probably not be "taken care of."

If you are out and about but forgot your cloth face mask then why not take tip from this guy.

Improvise with a plastic bag!

With the new virus comes new fashion.

A hat with a face shield looks silly but what do I know? I'm no fashion designer. Too bad face shields are now out of fashion. But with new variants and an overbearing government they could come back at any time.

Remember in 2020 the long lines at every single store? A lot of that was because management was limiting the number of customers. Here is a reminder of that nonsense

It's not like one could "social distance" while shopping. The aisles are narrow and frankly I have never seen any one enforcing social distancing at any store.

Along with the coronavirus came warnings to wash your hands and sanitize everything with alcohol. Cleanliness got a little high tech in some sectors with UV sterilizers being given away with the purchase of a brand new phone.

Believe it or not UV radiation can kill germs including COVID-19. But that is not to say that his particular device is effective at anything except getting to you buy an expensive new phone.

Remember when your neighbors got the COVID and were branded by the local health department for all to see?

Yeah, I don't think that was ever a good idea. All it did was instill fear in the community. Apparently the family being quarantined in this particular house were the subject of rumors regarding their COVID status which is why they hung up this sign shortly after their quarantine period ended:

What news was being spread about these people that they had to resort to hanging up this sign? People do have a tendency to talk and start rumors but that would not have happened if the government had not branded the infected with a huge yellow Star of David, I mean red tarp, for all to see.

Here is one coronavirus sign that is a sign for all seasons. Digital eye strain has been an increasing problem over the years as everyone stares at screens for hours every day.

All of that is very good advice in our computer age.

What is one of the best ways to stop the spread of the coronavirus? Reducing bank hours of course!

In view of the COVID-19 situation, our new banking schedule is as follows

What is the science behind this? There is none! They could stay open for an hour more or less and the virus would still continue to spread.

Most coronavirus signs make sense even if they are silly but this one is beyond me.

Why was this posted? What does it have to do with stopping the spread of the virus? Who the heck would walk around with concealed gasoline?  It makes no sense. Is it even a coronavirus sign? It was posted next to one so I think it is. It's a ridiculous sign nonetheless.

The next picture is just as nonsensical.

This is a coronavirus scene from SM Supermarket. Is infectious waste really going in that trash can? No. Just hand wipes and paper towels. This is not the only SM Supermarket with an "Infectious Waste" trash can.

Here is another!!

So why place the fake label on the can? What's the point? Scaremongering? Well, keeping people afraid is integral to what these coronavirus signs and situations are all about.

More and More Coronavirus Signs and Situations

Time for more silly coronoavirus signs and situation. With COVID-19 possibly becoming an endemic virus which will never leave we are faced with the possibly of silly coronavirus signs and situations for years to come.

Just imagine that from now on the malls and supermarkets will all be violating fire codes for the foreseeable future.

How many people will die from fires because of COVID-19 safety protocols? While there were no casualties or injuries reported at the Gaisano Mall fire in Antique on June 17th it could be that many will die because mall officials have locked the doors. The above lock is from a mall back in May.

Every one wants to be cool. Best way to be cool is to join a gang. Then automatically you are cool.

This lady is probably not out threatening social distance violators by snapping her fingers and dancing around with other club members but if she were that would be very cool.  However, having the security guard blow a whistle and hold up a sign telling you to practice social distance after he saw you getting too close to there customers in the crowded aisles is not very cool.

In the Philippines what is the best brand of face mask to wear underneath your mandated face shield? If you said Pinoy Mask Facemasks you'd be correct.

I saw these at a local store but you can buy them from Shopee. According to their Facebook page:
3PLY Disposable Facemask with meltblown layer, made in the Philippines by Filipinos, for Filipinos.

Pinoy Mask is a Philippine-made brand of facemasks. It is currently more known for its 3-PLY medical facemask. The brand's objective is to provide Filipinos with a reliable mask that is made by Filipinos.
Valenzuela City Mayor Rex Gatchalian gives it his seal of approval. Personally, I don't understand why anyone would be buying disposable face masks. Just get a washable cloth mask and save money and the environment. They are literally all the same. I have been using the same mask and shield since last April.

Many health protocols are contradictory. Take these two signs from the same restaurant.

The top signs says:
Couch Potatoes Save Lives
We Are Stronger Apart
#STAYHOME
The second sign says:
There will be one less lonely person when you share this table.
Which one is it? The sign on the wall says I should stay home (ironic since the only way from to see it is to actually go out) yet the sign on the table is suggesting I share a table, ostensibly with someone I do not know. Can they make up their minds please? Cognitive dissonance seems to be the word of the day when it comes to the pandemic.

This place also had a crazy coronavirus sign in the bathroom.

I am not even allowed to dry my hands. I have to shake them off or just let them remain wet. Or maybe not wash them at all to avoid any inconvenience.

If you leave your house and don't care to wear a face mask or follow any of the other silly and unscientific health protocols like wearing a face shield then you had better watch out.

The cops might beat you over the head with one of their enforcement sticks. Of course to do that they would have to violate their own social distancing rules.

I might be COVID? I might be COVID Red Cross? Looks like there was plenty of room to write out that last word but they were too lazy to do it.

Lots More Coronavirus Signs and Situations

I have written several articles concerning coronavirus signs and situations. I prefer each article to be based on silly things I have seen with my own two eyes but let's start this off with something I only saw in the news. On Twitter actually.

https://twitter.com/PhilstarNews/status/1384088513247813633

"Stay at home, or come with me"
Police officers arrange a scary display at the checkpoint along San Mateo, Rizal by the boundary of Quezon City to remind people to stay at home due to different variants of COVID-19.

This is a weird one. The cops are discouraging people at checkpoints from going any further due to, not just COVID-19, but the many variants floating around. But if you are at a checkpoint then obviously you  want or need to be out for some reason. Why turn back just because you see an early halloween display?

What's really funny is if you zoom in the sign reads:

Stay home?

or

Come with me?

Grammatically it does not even make sense because neither once of those choices should be a question. It's all declarative, "Stay home or come with me!"  It's just desperate scare tactics for a virus that has an over 90% survival rate and that you don't even know you have unless you get tested.

You know what else is scary? Machines! How many movies have there been made and how many science fiction books have been written where the machines take over? Ok, maybe machines in real life aren't so scary but they tend to impart a seriousness to the situation. Like this machine:

This is a sanitation corridor. Why the security guard did not want me to take a picture of it I have no idea. There is nothing secretive about it. You can see it from the street. He even told me how it works. You walk through it and you get sprayed with a mist of alcohol. Maybe he just did not want me to show the world how scared and stupid this BPO is.

Lots of fake drugs to combat COVID-19 are going around. A few boxes of them ended up on my dinner table but I had no idea at the time they were fake.

This drug is called "Lianhua Qingwen Jiaonang" and I have no idea what it does because the box and instructions are all in Chinese!

It turns out this particular version of this drug is unapproved by the FDA.  They have only approved the English language box.

https://news.abs-cbn.com/news/04/19/21/fda-warns-public-vs-unregistered-drug-lianhua-qingwen-jiaonang-with-chinese-characters

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned the public against the selling of unregistered drug product Lianhua Qingwen Jiaonang with Chinese characters.

Based on its advisory dated April 7, FDA said their continuing post-marketing surveillance saw “incessant sale” of the product even on social media.

“As per continuing post-marketing surveillance, there is still incessant sale and distribution even through social media platforms such as Facebook, of Lianhua Qingwen Jiaonang with Chinese characters, which were verified as unregistered by the FDA,” the FDA said.

The FDA reminded the public that only the drug with English text and said details in the advisory was issued with a Certificate of Product Registration and approved to be sold or marketed in the country.

“Thus, the agency cannot guarantee the quality and safety of the product with the Chinese text due to these have not undergone evaluation by the FDA and came from unlicensed sources or establishment. The consumption of such violative product may pose potential danger or injury if administered,” it said.

What the difference is between the contents of the English box and the Chinese box is, I don't know.

We all have heard how strict the PNP can be about enforcing COVID-19 protocols. Now you can be arrested for not wearing a face mask properly. I was on the jeepney a while back when they waved us over. Everyone that had a face shield quickly put it on. Those who did not faced these harrowing scenes:

In the first picture the PNP had stopped us. In the second on of them is taking pictures of the fact that they had handed out face shields! Woo!  Thank goodness no one went to jail. But that guy who received a free face shield did not even put it on and we all took them off as soon as the jeepney began moving.

Now let me show you probably the most "They Live" billboards I have ever seen. What is the real message here?

Vaccine is safe

Vaccine works

Sure thing. The vaccine is so safe I need a billboard to tell me so. Why is that?

Let's look at one last propaganda poster.

This is just your regular run-of-the-mill COVID-19 propaganda poster. But there is something odd at the bottom.

USAID?  Why is the CIA sponsoring this propaganda? Of course they have donated millions in equipment, why not help with the propaganda? The CIA is great in that department. See Operation Mockingbird!

Some More Coronavirus Signs and Situations

Outside of a construction site nearby are these three signs:

It is the central sign which is of particular importance here.

It's a little blurry so here is a clear digital infographic:

http://library.upm.edu.ph/node/128

Now keep in mind this is all ways to prepare for work due to COVID-19 at an office job and not a construction site. So there's ordinary things like washing your hands but there's also unordinary things like wearing short sleeves and tying your hair back. It's the last line that's really strange. This chart recommends changing into clean clothes and shoes before leaving work but also washing your clothes when you return home. It says do not wear your shoes from work into your home. Are you supposed to have three pairs? One to wear to work, one to wear home, and one to wear into your home?

How would one shower before interacting with their family? Must there be a big announcement before one arrives and everyone leaves so you can wash up before they return? It's all more than a little paranoid.

At that link there are several info charts related to COVID-19. Take a look at this one.

The message is "stay at home" but could it be any more Orwellian??

"We don't need the government to put us on ECQ. We can do it voluntarily! Let's do it for our healthcare workers, for ourselves and families."

Remember this is a virus with an over 90% survival rate. Or forget about it. This is the pandemic gripping the world and is totally serious. Whatever. Lock yourself inside and never come out until the government gives the all-clear signal. Oh and be sure to pray.

Restaurants are crazy now. There is no uniformity in their protocols. One restaurant I ate at in December gave me a standard refillable glass of ice water. At a different restaurant in February I got this:

Don't call me a Karen yet. My friends ordered canned sodas and were given glasses full of ice! What protocols are we talking about here which prevent me from being served with a complimentary glass of ice water? It does not make any sense.

At a local KFC the cashier was wearing this button:

I asked her what COVID-19 training was like and she said she did not go through any training. She was simply given the button by her boss. No one else was wearing this piece of flair. Isn't that lovely? It's called a lie. Good chicken though.

Speaking of training, if you want to go to the local gym you better mask up.

There a number of studies both for and against masks at the gym. Here is one that is against face masks while exercising published in June, 2020.

Exercising with facemasks may reduce available Oxygen and increase air trapping preventing substantial carbon dioxide exchange. The hypercapnic hypoxia may potentially increase acidic environment, cardiac overload, anaerobic metabolism and renal overload, which may substantially aggravate the underlying pathology of established chronic diseases. Further contrary to the earlier thought, no evidence exists to claim the facemasks during exercise offer additional protection from the droplet transfer of the virus. Hence, we recommend social distancing is better than facemasks during exercise and optimal utilization rather than exploitation of facemasks during exercise.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7306735/

Here is a study that is for face masks while exercising published in November, 2020.

In summary, our study found no detrimental effect of wearing either a non-disposable cloth or disposal surgical face mask while exercising vigorously on exercise performance. For healthy, active people, wearing a face mask during vigorous exercise has minimal effect on arterial or muscle oxygen levels and no effects on exercise performance.

https://www.mdpi.com/1660-4601/17/21/8110/htm

My scientific opinion is that wearing a face mask while working out is stupid. What about all that sweat your body is exuding and which will get flung around or wiped on the equipment? One study from 2004 indicates that sweating can help spread the virus indirectly.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/jvchamary/2020/09/29/coronavirus-infectious-sweat/

Can sweat spread Covid-19? That question is also a concern for people with 'hyperhidrosis' — a condition that causes extreme, uncontrollable sweating. And according to the International Hyperhidrosis Society, sweat "could actually help prevent the transmission of Covid-19." The organisation supports that claim with quotes from experts like dermatologist Adam Friedman of the George Washington University, who notes that "Sweat has some inherent antimicrobial activity."

But while that may sound like a definite answer, argument from authority is not scientific evidence — you have to read the research and point to papers. So what does science actually say about a link between sweat and coronaviruses?

The most highly-cited paper to mention a possible connection is a 2004 study led by pathologist Yanqing Ding at the First Military Medical University in Guangzhou, China, and virologist Shibo Jiang from the New York Blood Center.

The Chinese scientists surveyed the distribution of the original SARS-CoV-1 virus across different organs of dead patients and detected the pathogen in the sweat glands, stating that it "may be excreted [...] via sweat, thereby leading to virus transmission." Essentially, SARS-CoV-1 could escape through skin cells.

The virus can potentially escape through skin cells? Why not mandate full-body suits? It's better to exercise at home and avoid these silly regulations as well as any possible infection.

Along with the pandemic comes new litter.

There are face masks and face shields all over the place where I live. The above mask was lying in the middle of the road and is pretty funny because it honors front liners.  But check out this mask.

This is from the Vice Mayor's office.  It even has his face on it. But four days later.....

This mask has ended up on the side of the road with all other kinds of litter. I'm not going to post all the pictures I have of face masks and face shields lying in sugarcane fields.  It would be too redundant. It's enough to show this mask with the Vice Mayor's face.

Why did he even have it made? And at whose expense? Taxpayers? I hope not. There is a glut of face masks in the country right now. We don't need some politician making epal so everyone can see his face as a reminder he exists. Cleary some people don't care or his mask would not have ended up as so much litter!

The local 7/11 has added a new sign alerting us to the tally of local COVID-19 cases.

One active case and a negative two for increase or decrease of cases. Looks like we are in the clear! So why am I having to play dress up every time I leave my house? I can't say the same for any other barangays. In one barangay the employees at a salon do COVID-19 rapid antibody testing every 14 days!

It appears this is a blood test which is less painful than the back of the threat nose swab.

4. What sample is used in the test?

     Blood specimen from venous extraction.

https://www.themedicalcityclinic.com/covid-19-rapid-antibody-test-kit-frequently-asked-questions/

It's still pretty invasive but whatever it takes to keep a job, right? But is it really necessary? It does not seem so.

2. Who can take the test?

  • Patients with no symptoms but with history of close contacts of confirmed COVID-19 cases, or persons classified as suspected cases, who have completed the 14-day quarantine period.
  • Patients with no symptoms for at least 14 days, without any of the following:
    • fever
    • cough
    • sore throat / throat irritation
    • shortness of breath/ difficulty of breathing
    • new anosmia (loss of sense of smell) and/or ageusia (loss of sense of taste)
    • colds or nasal congestion
    • muscle pain
    • tiredness
    • diarrhea

I would guess that it is the second category which qualifies these employees to test themselves every 14 days. But it's a little paranoid don't you think? With no symptoms why bother to test? Because most cases are asymptomatic? I suppose that means I could have been infected and never have known! Hopefully the employer pays for the test.

More Coronavirus Signs and Scenes

Time for some more coronavirus signs and scenes. Funny signs and situations related to the pandemic which I have encountered around town.

Who knew that the COVID-19 pandemic would easily become a marketing ploy?

You buy five of these egg and milk flavored ice cream bars and you get one free mask!  Isn't that great? Not sure how it works though. There is no information on the wrapper.

COVID-19 has been a business boom for just about everyone selling face shields and home made face masks.

Being homemade it is doubtful these are N95 standard masks or that they will offer any protection from the virus. It is a scientific fact that masks offer no protection from the virus at all. But who cares because they are very stylish. Especially for the BDSM set. These would be selling like hotcakes in Canada whose top doctor recommends wearing masks during sex.

School's in session. Somewhat.

Two hours of class time for each grade every day. Surely the kids are loving that.

Here's a situation that is rather dumbfounding.

The PNP has a checkpoint set up but they aren't checking anything. Instead they are blocking traffic with their motorcycles in the middle of the street. What's the point?  Reminds me of this early morning scene from a few months back.

Instead of manning the checkpoint this PNP officer is asleep in a hammock in the middle of the road!  What if one of the huge sugarcane trucks which regularly blows by loses control and rams the checkpoint? Totally pointless. Sleeping on the job.

Here is a notice which is a result of the coronavirus lockdown which really irks me.

This notice is on my water bill. Ever since the lockdowns started in March the electric and water companies have been messing up everyone's bills! Too scared to go out and read the meter the utilities companies let charges pile up. Then when the lockdowns eased everyone, including me, received a huge bill!  The electric company seems to be doing actual reading but the water company is still giving estimates. I know I don't owe as much as they say. After all the water is cut off most times between 8am and noon!

Going to the market ain't what it used to be. I mean it basically is.  But then there's this:

What are these guys going to do? Shoot me if I don't wear a mask?  That would be ridiculous! At least at the public market they take your cash from your hand. But at Starbucks you have to make the transaction if it's by plastic and not cash.

At first this device did not even work so the manager had to come around and turn it on! What's the point? How is having the customer scan their own card going to stop the spread of COVID-19? I would really like to hear a specific answer as to how this set up will fight the virus.

As time passes all these so-called preventative measures continue to get sillier and sillier. We hear about flattening the curve when it comes to COVID-19 cases but when will the curve of silliness be flattened? How much deeper into clown world must we be plunged?

Believe it or not there is a way to fight back. You have to fight silly with silly. Behold my QR code card which I must now carry everywhere in order to transact business. All in the name of contact tracing!

Since they want to mock us it's only fair to mock them.
