Coronavirus Lockdown: Air Purifier Necklaces, Free Bicycles, and More!

More news about how the COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines is being handled by the public and the government.

The PNP have been arresting quarantine violators for the past since the lockdowns began. One of their biggest busts was when they nabbed 113 people for violating protocols at a bar.

https://news.abs-cbn.com/news/10/29/20/case-vs-113-arrested-in-makati-resto-bar-raid-dismissed

The Makati City Prosecutor's Office has dismissed the case police filed against 113 people, including locals and foreigners, who were arrested in a resto-bar raid for alleged quarantine violations in late June.

In a resolution dated October 13, Senior Assistant City Prosecutor Joel Vedan said police were not able to provide enough evidence for the respondents to be charged with violating Republic Act No. 11332 or the Mandatory Reporting of Notifiable Diseases and Health Events of Public Concern Act.

The fiscal sided with the resto-bar operator Felix Maramba and the customers who claimed they did not violate quarantine protocols.

He wrote that none of them were proven to be infected with a notifiable disease like COVID-19 that would be a violation of the law.

In their statements, the customers said the pictures police presented of them not physically distancing were shot when they were made to fall in line after the raid.

They also alleged police did not inform them they were being arrested then.

Fudge Tajar, lawyer for 13 of the respondents, said her clients are discussing whether to pursue administrative cases against the police officers behind the raid and the complaints filed against them.

(We don't want it to happen again and we want it to be a lesson to those who did this.)

(If they can do this to those who have a means in life, what more to those who have no work or who are having a hard time to work and are jailed, assaulted or tortured because they left their homes?)

(How about those who are not aware of their rights and do not know that their rights have been violated while they have not violated the law?)

For their part the police say the presented a strong case. The judge disagreed and the accused claimed the PNP set them up by talking pictures after the fact when they had been lined up. Now the cops could be facing charges.

The DOH has approved the use of a product to help combat COVID-19.

https://www.philstar.com/headlines/2020/10/30/2053338/doh-oks-use-necklace-air-purifier

Unlike the big “smoking” air purifiers, the Department of Health (DOH) does not see any harm in the use air purifier necklaces for protection against coronavirus disease.

“Such devices do not have smoke or mist. I think it is not going to cause harm, and there is nothing wrong with using them,” Heath Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said in a virtual briefing Wednesday.

The portable air purifier, worn like a necklace by many people including President Duterte, supposedly surrounds the head with clean air by emitting negative ions that push the pollutants away from an individual.

But Vergeire stressed that even a person wearing the necklace purifier should still observe the minimum health protocol as a precaution against COVID and other diseases.

Yes even Duterte is wearing a air purifier necklace.

https://cnnphilippines.com/news/2019/10/19/duterte-air-purifier.html

Amid continued concerns about his health, President Rodrigo Duterte now wears a portable air purifier around his neck during public appearances.

Duterte was seen donning the device Friday as he welcomed Indian President Ram Nath Kovind in Malacañang. This prompted the Palace to issue a clarification.

"That is an air purifier, para [so] he will be protected from persons within his proximity who have coughs and colds," Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said in a statement.

According to the AirTamer's website, its personal air purifier, similar to the one used by Duterte, removes airborne pollutants – including viruses, bacteria, and dust – from the user's personal space. It can be purchased online for around P7,000. The President has been spotted wearing it in a number of occasions this week.

It seems a rather dubious claim that this thing can combat COVID-19 and in fact the FDA issued a warning against these kind of products and claims back in May.

https://news.abs-cbn.com/news/05/14/20/virus-shut-out-lanyard-necklace-not-effective-illegal-not-registered-says-food-and-drug-administration

“These are not registered with FDA and there is no evidence to show that they can prevent COVID-19,” FDA Director General Eric Domingo told ABS-CBN News.

“People should not rely on them to prevent infection,” he added.

People who sell unregistered products face penalties under the Republic Act 9711 or the FDA Act.

If the FDA is against these products why would the DOH be fine with them? The DOH had to issue a clarification about the above story.

https://twitter.com/kristinesabillo/status/1322133460417355777

The DOH clarifies that it is NOT ENDORSING the use of necklace air purifiers that claim to kill bacteria or viruses or protect from COVID-19.

While these devices do not pose any harm, the DOH currently does not recommend using these devices due to lack of evidence of efficacy.

It's a rather confusing clarification. Are they saying that air purifiers with claims that they can kill viruses and bacteria are not recommend but others are OK to use or are they now saying that all air purifier necklaces are not recommended. Funny they recommend wearing masks which many studies prove do not help at all in stopping the spread of COVID-19.  See this link for more info: https://cv19.fr/eng/english/

For Dabawenyos the holidays just got a lot less festive as Mayor Duterte has imposed a 2 month liquor ban.

“Based on the interview of some Covid-19 patients, they revealed that they have exposure during their drinking sessions. Self-regulation is non-existent in drinking sessions,” she said in a radio interview on Friday. This is to prevent people from close contact gatherings, especially if their reason is to drink."

“It has been observed from patient interviews that selling, serving, and consumption of liquors and other similar intoxicating drinks encourage close contact gatherings, thereby defeating the objective of the community quarantine,” Mayor Sara's executive order said.

According to the directive, no liquor and any other alcoholic or intoxicating drinks "shall be sold, served, or consumed in public 24 hours of the day effective 5 a.m. of November 2, 2020".

“Why November 2? This is to give time to the businessmen to have their inventory,” Mayor Sara explained, even as she warned the city government would impose the "one-strike" rule against violators.

That is a lot of money and fun that will never be recovered. Aside from denying anyone the right to have a beer or two Mayor Duterte has also ordered all churches to be hot and unbearable in the name of stopping the spread of COVID-19.

https://www.sunstar.com.ph/article/1875277/Davao/Local-News/Mayor-tells-churches-Turn-off-fans-aircons

ALL electric fans and air conditioners in places of worship in Davao City must be turned off as much as possible to prevent Covid-19 transmission in these places, Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio said.

Duterte-Carpio said this is in accordance to her recently issued Executive Order 57-A, which regulates mass gatherings and prohibiting non-essential travels within the city.

Section 9 of EO 57-A amends the provision on the city's places of worship.

According to Section 9 (d) of the EO, "Electric fans must not be used and aircons must be turned off whenever applicable."

The mayor said medical officials recommended adequate ventilation in enclosed spaces, including churches and other religious venues.

"There is a church here that called their attention to the doctor because they opened an electric fan. It can also fly in the air once there is an infection inside. We made it clear that the electric fan and aircon should have turned off and open the windows, "she said.

As cane expected the WHO disagrees and says the air conditioning can actually reduce the spread of the virus.

Heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems are used to maintain indoor air temperature and humidity at healthy and comfortable levels. A well-maintained and operated system can reduce the spread of COVID-19 in indoor spaces by increasing the rate of  air change, reducing recirculation of air and increasing the use of outdoor air. Recirculation modes (which recirculate the air) should not be used. HVAC systems should be regularly inspected, maintained, and cleaned.

https://www.who.int/news-room/q-a-detail/q-a-ventilation-and-air-conditioning-and-covid-19

It's not as if any of these draconian regulations are based on real science anyway.

Face masks are required in public throughout the country while face shields are mandatory only in certain locations but not in public absolutely. N. Samar has changed that.

https://www.pna.gov.ph/articles/1120324

Northern Samar’s provincial government will strictly require the use of face masks and shields in public places and private establishments starting Sunday.

Governor Edwin Marino Ongchuan signed Executive Order (EO) 10-01 last October 23, imposing the mandatory wearing of personal protective gear to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

"Confirmed cases in the province continue to significantly rise despite our relentless and rigorous efforts in cooperation with other government and non-government entities. In order to prevent the spread of the virus, it is imperative for the provincial government to adopt more stringent minimum public health standards." Ongchuan said in the EO.

The province has recorded a total of 661 cases, some 224 of which have recovered and six have died, according to the provincial health office.

Of the total, 48 are new cases – 12 in Mondragon town, seven each in San Roque and Bobon, six in Pambujan, five in Catarman, three each in Las Navas and Lavezares, two in San Jose, and one each in San Antonio, Lope de Vega, and Palapag.

They were part of the 830 swab results from the two testing laboratories here that were released Friday night.

With investigation showing that new patients caught the disease from gatherings, the provincial government urged the public to strictly avoid organizing or attending parties, illegal cockfights or "tupada", drinking sprees, and wakes, among others, to break the chain of transmission.

661 cases of which 6 have died, 224 have recovered, and the rest remain active. Does the government not read their own statistics which tell them this disease is not as deadly as they claim?

The PNP is giving away bicycles to help those affected by the pandemic.

https://www.pna.gov.ph/articles/1120243

The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Friday gave an initial 50 bicycles to commuting Filipino workers to help them cope with the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) on their livelihood.

PNP Chief, Gen. Camilo Cascolan, led the turnover of the bicycles during the launch of the police force's “PADYAKabuhayan” program in Camp Crame.

Cascolan said the bicycles would be given to the working masses to provide them with an alternative means of transportation as they go to work and help them save money for their families’ food and other necessities.

He said “PADYAKabuhayan” likewise demonstrates the compassionate heart of the police towards Filipino workers already suffering from the economic impact of the lockdown.

No word on how to qualify for this program.

There is no vaccine yet but the Philippines now has a vaccine czar in place for that eventuality.

https://www.philstar.com/headlines/2020/11/03/2054306/malacaang-defends-appointment-ex-general-galvez-vaccine-czar

Malacañang defended Tuesday President Rodrigo Duterte’s appointment of presidential peace adviser Carlito Galvez, the former chief of staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, as coronavirus vaccine czar amid criticism that someone with a medical background should have been chosen instead.

Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said the distribution of the vaccines is more of a logistical problem than a medical one, stressing that the testing and approval of the vaccine would still be handled by medical experts.

“The vaccine operation will entail logistics. We really need someone who has managerial skills and is accustomed to these management processes,” Roque said partly in Filipino during his regular press briefing.

Galvez said that as coronavirus vaccine czar, he will be a “milestone keeper,” “integrator” and “synchronizer” of all agencies involved in the distribution of the vaccine.

Getting the vaccine out to far-flung and remote areas is going to take more than just logistics. It will take proper infrastructure as well as cold storage facilities, mobile cold storage facilities, which the Philippines does not currently possess.

COVID-19 cases in the Philippines have seen a downward trend and the Palace attributes some of this to the fact that the Philippine Red Cross suspended testing for a while because they were not paid by PhilHealth.

https://www.pna.gov.ph/articles/1120716

Malacañang on Wednesday admitted that the decision of Philippine Red Cross to temporarily halt its coronavirus disease (Covid-19) testing somehow contributed to a decrease in daily Covid-19 cases.

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque, however, also attributed the lower daily Covid-19 cases to Filipinos’ compliance with the minimum health and safety standards.

Well, I’m sure somehow the acts or the action of PRC in stopping their testing, somehow contributed, because less testing of course means less numbers. But I think by and large, people have been compliant with minimum health standards and of course,” he said in an interview over CNN Philippines’ The Source.

According to the Department of Health (DOH), the country saw a 25-percent decrease in new Covid-19 cases last month from an average number of 2,517 to 1,887.

Last month, the PRC temporarily stopped its Covid-19 tests for the government after the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth) failed to settle its outstanding balance of PHP930.99 million.

"Somehow." What a genius. Just goes to show that PhiHealth should pay their bills.

Evolution of an Illegal Garbage Dump

Outside of a resettlement area not far from here is an illegal dumping ground. I pass it frequently and it is interesting to watch it's evolution. Here is a picture from earlier in the year with a huge sign telling people they should stop tossing their garbage here.

Here is the same sign a few weeks later and someone has spray painted over it.

As ever the dogs are scavenging.  You can see them in the background.

As you may have guessed nobody cares and the people have completely ignored that sign. Eventually the weather wore it down and it is now gone. I have caught people dumping here many times day and night.

The problem with this dump is not the breaking of the law per se but the fact that this garbage dump is on the side of the road next sugar cane fields. The wind blows, the stray dogs scrounge, and the garbage gets strewn everywhere. It does not matter that the garbage truck picks up the majority of the trash.

They cannot pick up everything, only the big bags. There is always filth left over and much of it sinks into the soil especially after the rain.

There is also a little creek there and it too is full of trash.

I admit that it is a little hard to make out but that is a creek which runs through the sugarcane fields on either side of the road. It's dry in this picture but when the rainy season comes it is very wet and the garbage gets disseminated far and wide.

There are no pictures I can take that will accurately convey the overwhelming stink and the absolute filth of this area. The environment is totally polluted and the air is wholly offensive. What is to be done? I don't know. Maybe a large metal dumpster or two could be placed here. Obviously people will continue to toss their trash here. People are even scavenging this dumpsite.

It's pretty gross and it does not have to be this way. But it is this way and that appears to be how it will remain.

Insurgency: Media Friends Rock the Night

For the past few weeks I have taken a look at some of the propaganda the AFP has been spreading in their fight against the insurgency. It might seem like beating a dead horse to keep on about it but the AFP admits their propaganda team plays a vital part in the fight against the insurgency. The AFP recently threw them a fête.

https://www.kalinawnews.com/media-friends-rock-the-night-during-6th-id-media-fellowship/

To recognize the role of media in the campaign for peace and security, the 6th Infantry (KAMPILAN) Division held a media Night for the members of the fourth state in Kampilan Eco Park, Camp Siongco, Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao on October 22, 2020.

Major General Juvymax R. Uy, Commander of 6th Infantry Division and Joint Task Force Central led the media night wherein he acknowledged the importance of the media in the division’s quest to inform the public with the right information in support to our pursuit for peace and security.

“The book entitled the ‘War in 145 Characters’, recognizes the role of the media in our current society. They present the information, current situation, fashion, propaganda, advertisements of new products and new trends, yan po ang media. Ang gabing ito ay inihanda namin para sa pasasalamat sa mga media sa South at Central Mindanao in connection with the 33rd founding anniversary of the command” said Major Gen. Uy.

At least 31 tri-media personalities who came from Kidapawan City, Tacurong City, General Santos City and Cotabato City attended the party.

The program was an opportunity to meet and greet personalities known only through phone-patch interviews which is a way of strengthening the bond between partners and buddies in the world of information technology.

The night ended joyfully as every guest went home with smiles as they dragged along with them tokens and prizes from the raffle draws conducted.

It's interesting that Maj. Gen. Uy mentions the book "War In 145 Characters" as recognizing the role of the media in society. That is quite an understatement. The book is actually titled "War in 140 Characters: How Social Media is Reshaping Conflict in the Twenty-First Century." It is about the influence of social media in conflict-ridden areas in particular and not just the power of media in general.

https://www.amazon.com/War-140-Characters-Reshaping-Twenty-First/dp/046509614X

From a review:

At its heart, War in 140 Characters explores how social media is shifting the power balance from institutions and governments to individuals and networks of individuals—and it’s having an enormous impact on how wars are being fought and won. Take Farah Baker, for instance: the Palestinian teenager whose tweets chronicling the 2014 Israel-Gaza conflict went viral and helped spark international outrage against Israel. Armed with a smartphone, Farah went from powerless teenager stuck in her apartment in Gaza to citizen-journalist reporting on war for a global audience.

War in 140 Characters is, after all, a book fundamentally about the power of narratives to shape our world and our wars. And what makes it so readable is that it is a book of stories, drawing readers into the personal, poignant lives of individuals to explore some of the most important questions about the changing face of contemporary warfare.

I have not read this book so I cannot comment on it but we all have seen this scenario of social media influencing real world politics. From Russia's Internet Research Agency to Duterte's troll army we have all seen how social media can influence real world situations. So it is interesting that not only does the AFP admit that social media propaganda is important in the fight against the insurgency but they threw a huge party for their operatives. All this while denying that they had anything to do with the pages Facebook took down a few weeks ago. Why should anyone believe them?

Last week the NTF-ELCAC put up anti-NPA tarps in Manila which the Mayor promptly took down. This week the PNP put up an anti-NPA banner at the Bacoor Command Center in Cavite which the Governor took down.
https://newsinfo.inquirer.net/1353726/anti-red-tarps-posters-taken-down-in-cavite

The Philippine National Police in Cavite took responsibility for the anticommunist tarpaulins displayed in some areas in the province, which Gov. Juanito Victor “Jonvic” Remulla ordered taken down a day after his heated exchange with a military official.

Remulla on Tuesday ordered the posters hung at Bacoor City police station removed, while his office continued to receive reports of the same propaganda material seen in Silang, Maragondon and Ternate towns.

The governor, however, maintained his position on the military’s Red-tagging. “Cavite is an insurgency-free province so no need for unnecessary propaganda. Focus should be on pandemic efforts, economic recovery, education, connectivity, etc.,” he said.

In a phone interview, Col. Marlon Santos, Cavite police director, said the tarpaulins bearing the logos of the Communist Party of the Philippines, New People’s Army and National Democratic Front of the Philippines (CPP-NPA-NDFP) and labeled “Hari ng Terorismo! Dakilang Manloloko!” (King of Terrorism! Great Fraud!) were the initiatives of local police stations.

“We’d just replace them with a better phrasing,” Santos said. “I mean, even with the text, why would you even flaunt very large logos (of the CPP-NPA-NDFP) in a government office or a police station?”

He said he realized the posters might “arouse curiosity,” especially among the youth, about communism.

Here is what one of the tarps looked like:

https://twitter.com/jonvicremulla/status/1320898149309771776/photo/1

Now why would the PNP hang this up at the Bacoor Command Center? Why not hang it up in an area where the NPA is active? The governor claims the province is insurgency-free.

https://twitter.com/jonvicremulla/status/1320898149309771776

It is also funny that the PNP admits that seeing this symbols might prompt an interest in communism amongst the youth. That is the double-edged sword of propaganda. To be sure the propaganda in the Philippines is double-edged. One side is against the real enemies of the state like the CPP-NPA and the other is against perceived enemies of the state such as the media.

https://www.rappler.com/nation/media-groups-journalists-academics-condemn-black-propaganda-abs-cbn-maria-ressa

These Facebook posts, while they have been taken down, are a brazenly criminal abuse of authority on the part of the NTF-ELCAC, replete with half-truths and outright lies that willfully endanger Maria and the management and personnel of the network that government shut down.

The only reason we can think of why a government entity tasked to combat the communist insurgency would wage a propaganda offensive against media persons and outfits is if government now considers us the enemy.

In fact, Lieutenant General Antonio Parlade, NTF-ELCAC spokesman and Southern Luzon Command chief, indicated as much. In a May 8 Philippine News Agency report, while insisting that press freedom was alive in this country, also warned critics of the ABS-CBN shutdown: "Yes to law and order! Otherwise you might just get the martial law that you deserve."

Worse, the Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) aided in the slander by sharing these posts on its own page, although it later took these down, apparently after generating backlash from netizens.

While Communications Secretary Martin Andanar issued a statement saying the NTF-ELCAC posts were shared "without the usual vetting process of our office" and were "not in any way an official statement or an opinion of the PCOO," neither did he apologize for his agency's involvement nor even promise an investigation to identify those responsible for this reprehensibly irresponsible action.

We demand that government, including the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), immediately mount an investigation into who in the NTF-ELCAC were responsible for ordering and creating the slanderous posts and why.

Whatever your thoughts about ABS-CBN and Rappler are it is strange that the NTF-ELCAC would comment on the situation as it is not part of their mandate.

A National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC) was created to synchronize the utilization of the government's instrumentalities of power with the capabilities of private sector stakeholders to finally end the 50-year long deceit, lies and atrocities committed by the communist terrorists against the people.

Believe it or not the NTF-ELCAC has propaganda to "prove" that opposing ABS-CBN falls under their mandate.

https://www.facebook.com/SouthernLuzonCommandAFP/photos/a.1503968379863230/2569399463320111/?type=3&theater

https://www.facebook.com/SouthernLuzonCommandAFP/photos/a.1503968379863230/2569399696653421/?type=3&theater

Don't be fooled and think this propaganda is too stupid for anyone to fall for because there are plenty of stupid people who have fallen for it.

https://www.facebook.com/SouthernLuzonCommandAFP/posts/2569399499986774?comment_id=2569705443289513

Those congressmen and senators who are rabidly pushing for ABS-CBN's franchise renewal, are you aware that you are sleeping with these enemies (NPAs) of the state? This picture is damning.

Nelson Palispis yes they are aware that is why they continue supporting abs cbn because this network has power over this rebels to dictate whom to vote.

https://www.facebook.com/SouthernLuzonCommandAFP/posts/2569399499986774?comment_id=2569541989972525

Remember that Cory freed Joma (CPP NPA leader) and gave Lopezes back ABS without paying their debt to the govt. They have alleged connections, we just need physical evidence.

What a smear to link ABS-CBN with the CPP-NPA with zero evidence. There are plenty of explanations for those pictures such as the CPP-NPA being against Duterte's hardline stance to shut down ABS-CBN for no good reason at all. It is such an illogical leap to show these pictures and then link ABS-CBN to the insurgency. This issue did not even come up at their franchise hearing because it's so totally bogus. Far from being damning these pictures only raise a lot of questions which the NTF-ELCAC does not want to answer truthfully.

Lest you think the NTF-ELCAC is agains the media here they are advocating legislation that is way out of their purview.

https://tribune.net.ph/index.php/2020/09/22/media-workers-get-ntf-elcac-support/

The National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF ELCAC) strongly supports any legislation that would protect media workers from any form of exploitation.

This was stressed by Southern Luzon Command chief, Lt. Gen. Antonio Parlade, Jr., referring to Senate Bill (SB) 1820 or the Media Workers’ Welfare Act filed by Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III.

“The NTF ELCAC supports Senate Bill 1820 to ensure the protection of the welfare of media practitioners from the exploitative practices of media magnates. These media moguls are raking billions but have neglected their workers working during odd-hours just to beat deadlines,” he said in a statement.

Here is Paralade tying all this into COVID-19.

https://www.pna.gov.ph/articles/1102237

"What martial law are you talking about? Press freedom in the country is very much alive," Parlade said in response to Olano's claim that it "is a dark day for media freedom in the Philippines, reminiscent of martial law when the dictatorship seized control over news agencies".

Parlade said such claims are "non-sequitur"  as the ABS-CBN issue is simply the regulation of a franchise that is a prerogative of the State and enshrined in the Constitution.

"Granting a franchise is the exercise of the sovereign power of a state to allow the use of sovereign assets for an assigned period of time. In the case of ABS-CBN, these sovereign assets are frequencies assigned to it for use in its broadcast businesses. The franchise is a usufruct(usage) right  and since it is a right to use, regulation and accompanying rules to prevent abuse comes as a matter of course," he said in a statement sent to the Philippine News Agency on Wednesday.

Despite the NTC's cease-and-desist order against ABS-CBN, other Philippine television channels and media outfits are still operating, he added.

"Has NTC stopped the operation of GMA-7, Channel 5, CNN Philippines, and other TV stations? (No one has) stopped PDI (Philippine Daily Inquirer), Philippine Star, and any other print media (from operating). Your communist allies and writers in the print media are still writing their pieces. Our favorite stations are still on air. So what suppression of press freedom are you talking about?" he said.

"The case of ABS CBN can be likened to Rappler's. We have laws and regulations to follow and promote and it is not the law of the rich and powerful. Be thankful because for the first time in history there is an equalizer who wouldn't budge about how some rich and mighty people think that they are more 'equal' than others. It's about time we enforce our laws. So stay home and help the government address this (coronavirus disease 2019) Covid-19," he added.

He said Olano and his group should stop harping on a non-issue.

"Yes to law and order!  Otherwise you might just get the martial law that you deserve," he added.

What does this have to do with the NTC-ELCAC's mission? Absolutely nothing! So why is Parlade making such pronouncements? And what is with his threat about getting "the martial law that you deserve?"  Yes to law and order? ABS-CBN was cleared of any wrong doing from the BI and other agencies. They were not breaking any laws.

It's funny how he alleges there are communist allies in the print media. Who exactly is he talking about? What does it have to do wth COVID? The answer is "nothing" of course!

You really have to wonder who these people are. Like who is Remy Rosadio?

https://www.pna.gov.ph/articles/1120124

Anti-communist groups and other civil society organizations on Thursday called on the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army-National Democratic Front (CPP-NPA-NDF) and its allies to end their atrocities and stop the recruitment of youth.

Members of the League of Parents in the Philippines (LPP), Liga Independencia Pilipinas (LIPI), and Hands Off Our Children, and mothers of students who were reportedly recruited by various militant groups, gathered at the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman and in Timog Circle in Quezon City, as they protested the attacks by communist terrorist groups.

LPP chair Remy Rosadio said communist rebels should be held liable for their lawlessness.

While these groups claim to be "pro-people and pro-marginalized", Rosadio said these groups and their allied organizations should not be emulated.

"They're are destroying our children, they are destroying our country, for them, no government is doing its job because they wanted to take the lead. Leading to what? To the insurgency, to killing innocents and recruiting youth to bring to the mountains," Rosadio said.

Rosadio urged the communist groups to stay away from engaging vulnerable youth to join their cause.

"Stop your propaganda. Stop deceptions. Stop the lies. Stop recruiting minors," she said, noting that each child deserves a peaceful life.

Who is this guy? Who are these people? Who is funding this group?

NTF-ELCAC spokesman Parlade's source was unmasked this week. Turns out he is a former rebel who has been using a false identity to protect himself.

https://www.philstar.com/headlines/2020/10/30/2053430/ntf-elcac-presents-alleged-former-rebel-amid-red-tagging-campaign

The National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict on Friday presented an alleged former communist rebel amid cotroversy sparked by the government alleging that the Communist Party of the Philippines controls activist groups, which the task force calls "front groups".

Jeffrey Celiz, who said his alias was "Ka Eric," said in a live stream aired on the NTF-ELCAC Facebook page that he is a former cadre of the armed wing of Communist Party of the Philippines "with 27 years of revolutionary experience."

"I am facing the nation today...I am living proof that there is no such thing as red-tagging done by the government. Not only General Parlade or the military, or the NTF-ELCAC," he said.

Celiz accused around 24 "mass organizations" in the country of being recruiters for the New People's Army. He also said that he intends to give a presentation to the Senate regarding these groups.

"I am [in the] process of executing my affidavit and sworn statement," he said.

The Senate committee on national defense has set a hearing on red-tagging and will summon military officials as well as officers of Gabriela Women's Party. The hearing, called by Sen. Panfilo Lacson, was prompted by a "warning" that Lt. Gen. Antonio Parlade Jr., task force spokesman, to celebrities Liza Soberano and Catriona Gray to disassociate from Gabriela.

The so-called former rebel also tagged a number of lawmakers and claimed that a celebrity recently called out by Parlade was connected to the armed wing of the CPP.

"I am coming out to support the Filipino people. The deceptive, manipulative, and skillful, masterful lies of the CPP-NPA-NDF and the recruitment of the different sectors, more particularly of the youth sectors and students, must be put to stop," Celiz said.

This guy's biography is rather stunning.

In his interview, Ka Eric claimed that he was a member of the CPP-NPA-NDF (National Democratic Front) for 27 years. He started with the College Editors’ Guild of the Philippines in March 1988 and formally joined the CPP movement in December of the same year.

He said he severed ties with the group in 2015.

Eric also admitted that he took part in incidents that killed both government forces and his comrades.

"Unavoidable. But it still comes back to me even though I am asleep, ”he said.

Eric said he is still haunted by his conscience.

"This is my redemption," he said referring to his "coming out." "It is a change of self and a change in my life."

By doing so, "I want to take back my guilt on the people, especially the people we have tortured in the CPP-NPA," he claimed.

He was with the NPA for 27 years, which is a little more than half the total length of the insurgency, only severing ties 5 years ago and he claims he was involved in operations which ended in the deaths of AFP soldiers. Why is the government trusting him? On what basis? He has named names and is sticking with his story which should prove to be compelling if he is indeed called to testify at the Senate hearing on red-tagging.

I could go on and on but I will not. The fact is the AFP and the NTF-ELCAC is engaged in disseminating propaganda to the Filipino people. The AFP is attempting to control the narrative and make it appear as if everyone is against the CPP-NPA. That is why the are placing tarps in populated areas where the NPA is not active. That is why they are staging rallies with ex-rebels. That is why they are encouraging rebels to surrender so they can make them into spokesmen for the government's programs. The narrative the AFP is attempting to spin is that the government is not evil, corrupt, and indifferent but good, pure, and a father at hand willing to take care of the people.

The problem is not that their message is totally wrong. It is not. Many people are indeed against the CPP-NPA and they are fighting a worthless cause. However it is deceptive in many parts such as accusing ABS-CBN of being linked to the CPP-NPA.

The problem here is that the Filipino people are not the insurgency so they should not have propaganda directed towards them. It's difficult for the AFP to separate the public and the CPP-NPA in their propaganda efforts because they are disseminating this propaganda through their media arms which are accessed by the public. It's like trying to kill all the rats in a neighborhood by placing poison everywhere. The dogs will end up eating it and dying too. It is more effective to put the poison where the rats frequent.

Picture of the Week: No Room

This is among the stupidest things I have ever seen.  Quite dangerous too.

There must not be any room inside this truck for all those Mountain Dew bottles so in a flash of genius the driver tied them to the top with some rope. But the bottles are still not secure. One bump and it's over! CRASH!  SMASH!! What was he thinking?
