Who is Really Polluting the Philippines?

Environmental group Greenpeace is blaming big Western corporations for polluting the Philippines.

https://www.rappler.com/science-nature/environment/183026-big-western-brands-polluting-oceans-cheap-plastic
Western consumer giants are polluting oceans by selling products packaged in cheap, disposable plastic to Filipinos, Greenpeace has claimed.
Greenpeace said Nestle, Unilever, and Procter & Gamble were among the worst offenders.
Single-use plastics from products sold by conglomerates, such as bags, bottle labels, and straws, stood out during a week-long Greenpeace clean-up campaign held on Manila Bay this month, it said.
More than 54,200 pieces of plastic waste were recovered from the bay in total, including some 9,000 from Nestle products – the most frequently-seen brand, according to a tally kept by the group.
Anyone who actually lives in the Philippines knows how completely laughable this is.  Big Western companies responsible for polluting the Philippines? HAHA! Greenpeace just does not want to blame Filipinos because they don't want to face the inevitable backlash. So they blame Western corporations.
The solutions proposed by Nestle were "still promoting incineration and end-of-pipe solutions, while Greenpeace advocates for waste reduction and banning of single-use plastics altogether," Pago added.
Greenpeace has it's head so far in the sand it's unbelievable. Of course the banning of single-use plastics would curb the problem but it would not solve it. What is needed is a strict anti-litter and pollution campaign.  Filipinos must have it drilled into them that to litter is fundamentally bad.  To litter and pollute the Philippines is to hate the Philippines.

Take a look around and see all the garbage!

Of course if you point out all this garbage you get called persona non grata.  Filipinos cannot take criticism at all. They would rather run someone out of town than deal with their garbage problem.

http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/700830/dads-pillory-dutch-over-trash-post
A Dutch national, living in the Philippines for 14 years, was declared persona non grata in the tourist destination Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro province, for complaining about uncollected garbage in the town.
What's really needed is a nationwide anti-litter campaign. Before Duterte can take the Philippines to the first world he needs to literally clean the place up. Is Duterte or anyone else in the Philippines aware that  garbage can be burned to generate energy?
waste-to-energy plant is a waste management facility that combusts wastes to produce electricity. This type of power plant is sometimes called a trash-to-energy, municipal waste incineration, energy recovery, or resource recovery plant.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waste-to-energy_plant
Bringing such technology to the Philippines would be a boon for the economy and ease the strain on the grid. It would also help solve the garbage problem. Sachets are not going away anytime soon if ever.

How much of this plastic will end up in the waterways?
The only downside to getting people to stop littering is that it might put street sweepers out of a job.

But a clean Philippines is worth it.  As it is now the Philippines is literally a massive trash dump.

Street Side Pet Shop

In the Philippines when you want a dog the best place to look is a sidewalk to see if anyone is selling dogs.

I am sure these guys are 100% legit. The dogs are likely healthy and they are exactly the breed they say they are.

Just look at all this capitalism in action.  Adam Smith would be proud.  If you have something to sell then sell it.  Regulations and permits and licenses be damned. The entrepreneurial spirit is what will bring the Philippines into the economic stratosphere occupied by first world nations.

Overloaded Sugarcane Trucks

Overloaded trucks, jeepneys, and tricycles are a common sight on any road in the Philippines.  Large loads precariously teetering on the roofs of these vehicles are enough to make anyone scratch their head.  Why?  And how?  Sometimes these items are secured with nothing more but the flimsiest of paper strings.

Overloaded sugarcane trucks pose a different problem because the whole process is overseen and sanctioned by the sugar company.  If the sugar company really had any qualms about overloaded trucks and the danger and waste they pose then they would reprimand the drivers and the loaders.  But everyday they keep coming.

Finally! A reasonably loaded truck.  Probably the last haul which is why it is not overloaded.
Overloading the truck can have dire consequences.  Many of the trucks really put the pedal to the metal and barrel on down the highway. Sometimes they do not even turn on their headlights at night.  As a consequence trucks tip over and sugarcane spills out on the street.

What a hazard.  Not to mention all that money lost when the sugarcane falls onto the road.

Copycat Businesses

Why do you do when you have a failing business?  You copycat a successful business and hope for the best.

This place used to be called something like "Juan's Resto Bar."  It's just your normal everyday karaoke joint. Nothing special.  But then a new restaurant opened in the mall.

Do you see what they did?

The "V" sounds like a "B" so they changed the name of their place to "Bikingz" in imitation of this successful chain restaurant.  They even have a viking riding a bike as their logo.

It's reminiscent of the movie "Coming to America" where there was a restaurant called "McDowell's" which was an imitation of "McDonald's."

How Recto University Is Wrecking the Philippines

In the Philippines fraud and dishonesty are not just the foibles of the few. In the Philippines fraud is a way of life. It's the unwritten law of the land. Any document you want can be had, at a price of course.
http://lifestyle.inquirer.net/152690/recto-university-you-name-it-they-have-it/
From an ID card to a driver’s license, thesis paper, receipt, Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) red ribbon, diploma or any other document, you can get it here. One can order these items for anywhere between P200 and P1,500 and collect it after two hours at most. But of course, it’s fake.
Claro M. Recto Avenue, known as “Recto University,” is a one-stop shop not only for students in Metro Manila but also for those from the provinces who need documents for a job.
A year-round bestseller is the Land Transportation Office (LTO) driver’s license, which costs P500. Joey explained that they already have blank IDs ready to be filled up, whether it be a university or government ID.
Another popular item for sale in Joey’s stall is the fake diploma. A high-school diploma is worth P250, while a college diploma is worth P500 (larger diplomas from certain colleges cost more).
When asked whether he has a copy of diplomas of every university in Metro Manila, he says confidently,  “Oo naman.”
Moreover, Joey bragged, “Recto U” is not limited to the universities in Metro Manila. There also are copies of diplomas from schools as far as  Mindanao and Visayas, some of them not known to Manileños.
While it seems like most items are overpriced, Joey confessed that the money is barely enough to support his family on a weekly basis. He simply acts as a runner, while the forgeries happen behind closed doors. He  gets his cut of the payment weekly (daily, if business is good).
Moreover, the cops reportedly take a weekly cut from these payments, as well.
“Minsan ang kinikita diyan nabibigay din sa mga police. Bawal maglagay diyan hangga’t hindi sila nabibigyan ng kotong,” he says. “Minsan zero pa isang araw, eh, walang nagpapagawa.”
Their cut ranges from P40-P300 a week, depending on the weekly profit of the stall.
Through the years, “Recto University” has existed and numerous raids have been conducted by the Manila Police District. Business is bad for about a week. Then people start “graduating” again from “Recto U.”
Fake drivers licences and fake diplomas means any moron with the right amount of money can pass himself off as being legit. Why bother with the fake license though? Many people here drive without one anyway. But the diplomas, that's where money can be made.  You want to be a dentist but didn't pass the exams or even go to school in the first place? With a fake diploma everyone will believe you are legit. Who's going to bother to check?
http://www.philstar.com/cebu-news/2017/02/06/1669587/pda-issues-warning-about-fake-dentists

A fake doctor.
With the right fake documents you can even sneak into the police academy and become a member of the PNP.
http://www.philstar.com/headlines/2017/09/18/1740254/200-cops-cheated-napolcom-entrance-test
“More than 200 itong na-discover namin na may statistical improbability na tinatawag na kung bakit pare-pareho ang maling answers, pare-pareho ang correct answers (We’ve discovered more than 200 exams that have what we call statistical improbability, where the wrong answers and the correct answers are exactly the same,” Casurao said in an interview over radio station dzMM. “We issued a circular voiding their eligibility.”
Casurao added that as part of their effort to cleanse the police organization, the Napolcom has also been checking papers of policemen following reports that some PNP personnel used falsified documents when they entered the police service.
“Ngayon, ang dami naming nahuhuli na after serving the PNP for 10 years, 15 years, nadidiskubre namin na after all, lahat pala ng papeles na isinubmit ay mga peke (Now, we’ve caught many who, after serving the PNP for 10 years, 15 years, would be discovered to have submitted fake documents),” he said.
Casurao said the Napolcom has started working on periodic audits, neurological tests and retraining for policemen to ensure they are fit for public service.
Many of these fake documents used by PNP candidates are likely birth certificates. In the Philippines it is commonplace for legitimate documents to be riddled with spelling and other errors. Correcting these errors takes a lot of time people don't have. So when they need to use these documents they simply acquire fakes. But there could be other fake documents used by PNP candidates as well such as criminology degrees. No matter what document it is there is no justifiable excuse for procuring fakes.

Why is Recto University still operating? How hard can it possibly be to shut it, and other places like it, down?
http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/872356/cops-again-try-to-shut-down-notorious-university
Members of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) of the Philippine National Police on Thursday raided several establishments along C.M. Recto Avenue in Manila that are notorious for making fake documents—diplomas, death certificates, senior citizen cards and even land titles.
CIDG members from Camp Crame came with two police trucks and stormed the so-called “Recto University,” entering five stores and arresting seven men suspected of being “fixers” or agents who seek out customers in need of counterfeit papers. They face charges for fabrication of public documents.
We will not stop with our raids until their operations stop. We have a directive to implement the order of President Duterte to go after them,” said Senior Supt. Belli Tamayo, CIDG-NCR chief. “Actually, this is not the first CIDG operation against them and we will continue until they stop. They have different kinds of IDs. You name it, they have it.”
A directive from Duterte?  Really? Then how is this massive fraud still happening?  Drug suspects are being killed left and right because the PNP has a directive from Dutete to put a stop to drug use and trafficking but Recto University is still in session? Sounds like they aren't trying hard enough.

If the PNP really wanted to shut this place down you better believe they could do it.  But they haven't. And when has Duterte raised a stink about this place? When he speaks of ending corruption it's always in the context of corrupt government employees not the everyday wide scale corruption practiced among the common folk.

Recto University might just be the biggest shame of the Philippines. It is certainly a candidate.  The Philippines wants so badly to be a first world nation and the government and the people boast about how strong and stable the nation and economy are.  But how stable is it really when this sort of fraud is practiced openly, allowing impostors to pass themselves off as legit? How can the Philippines be stable at all when the whole nation laughs at this deception and says, "Oh well that's how it is?"

The foundations of this nation are rotten to the core. At surface level everything looks white and beautiful. But inside are dead men's bones and every sort of filth. A nation cannot be built on fraud. There must be trust. What kind of nation is it when you can't trust anyone and everything is a lie?

Martial Law: It's Not Our Priority

At the beginning of the week Duterte made his 4th visit to Marawi.

https://www.rappler.com/nation/181812-duterte-4th-visit-marawi-city-september-11
"The President went to the Grand Islamic Mosque which used to be the command and control of the Maute Terrorist Group and where some hostages were hidden," according to a Malacañang statement.
"He proceeded to the Mapandi Bridge and to the main battel area where he gladly allowed photo opportunities with the troops to give them morale support," the statement added.
Photo opportunities to boost morale?  You know what would boost moral even more?  An all expense paid trip to Hong Kong once the fight is over!
http://www.philstar.com/headlines/2017/09/13/1738674/trip-hk-female-soldiers-marawi
For getting the job done, President Duterte promised women soldiers deployed in Marawi City an all-expense paid trip to Hong Kong.
During his previous visit to the frontlines last month, Duterte egged on the troops to stay alive and promised them an all-expense paid trip to Hong Kong and other perks as soon as they win the war.
He said the trip to Hong Kong would be a family treat.
And if anyone does not want to avail himself of the all-expense paid trip, Duterte joked they could choose to spend time with an actress.
Wearing a camouflage top and gray corduroy pants, Duterte set foot in Marawi City to give away goods including Casio G-Shock watches and cigarettes to the troops.
“I will not stop you (from smoking) because you are under stress,” Duterte remarked.
Duterte also promised that on his next visit, he would bring some celebrities to perk up the atmosphere in the battle area. He said the soldiers can “gently touch” the entertainers.
“We have to finish this then you can take a vacation,” he told the troops.
Free watches! Free cigarettes! Free trip to Hong Kong! Time with an actress and celebrities they can gently touch!  Wait....what??  Duterte promised to being celebrities to the battle zone so the soldiers can gently molest them?  Who would volunteer for that? What about Mocha? Are the soldiers not allowed to gently molest her to boost morale?  What is she even doing in the battle zone?  Why does she visit Marawi and not wear any camouflage or kevlar? This sexy dancer turn propagandist is a major liability.
http://www.gmanetwork.com/news/news/nation/625584/mocha-criticized-for-taking-selfie-inside-mosque-with-her-boots-on/story/
These Muslims are so delusional they really think that anyone is going to be taking their shoes off in a war zone. Were they this upset that the Maute group used the Grand Mosque as a headquarters from which to spill blood?  Isn't using the Grand Mosque as a snipers nest much more of a desecration?

What's even worse is Duterte's response. He is so bent on not offending Muslims who won't condemn the terror groups in Mindanao that he will bend over backwards and apologise profusely for something which he should not have to offer apologies.

The battle rages on and the AFP continues to gain ground and learn more about Maute's techniques to evade bombardment.

https://www.rappler.com/nation/182155-maute-ratholes-trenches-marawi-battle-area
Trenches were also discovered behind walls with sniper holes, a deceptive tactic that the military said explained why troops sometimes found it hard to see where bullets were coming from.
Lieutenant Colonel Mon Almodovar, commander of the 3rd Scout Ranger Battalion, said the enemies they were fighting were very “dynamic” on the battle field.
Pinag-aaralan din natin ang kalaban. Ang kalaban kasi very dynamic din sila. Noong una hindi sila naghuhukay. Eventually, habang tumatagal, naghuhukay na sila. Nagta-tunnel na sila. Kumbaga, we have to adopt din sa kanila based doon sa tactics ng kalaban,” Almodovar said.
(We are also studying the enemies. The enemies are very dynamic. They weren’t digging in the beginning. Eventually, as the fighting draffed, they started digging. They created tunnels. We also have to adopt to them based on their moves.)
The AFP sure does have a lot to learn. They aren't trained in urban warfare and were totally unprepared for this fight. Why is the siege still on 4 months later? Who is supplying these people? What are they eating?  Where are they sleeping? So much to learn but apparently one thing is not a priority for the AFP: learning the source of Maute's weapons.

http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/930750/militants-fighting-in-marawi-using-govt-owned-guns-says-army-exec
Most weapons recovered from slain militants belonging to the Maute group and its allies or from areas they had vacated in this Lanao del Sur provincial capital bore marks which indicated that these came from the government, a military spokesperson said.
“It only meant that somebody from the government sold it to them,” said Capt. Jo-ann Petinglay, spokesperson for the Joint Task Force Marawi.
Petinglay, however, did not say how many of these recovered firearms had been confirmed to have come from the government armoury.
The military has recovered at least 628 firearms—among these high-powered weapons like Barrett .50 caliber sniper’s rifles and Armalite, Garand and M14 rifles—since fighting began in late May when Islamic State-inspired militants took over sections of Marawi.
According to Petinglay, finding out who are responsible for the delivery of the firearms to the Maute group and its allies is not the military’s priority, noting that the investigation can be conducted after the fighting here ends.
“It’s easy to track where (the firearms) came from (based on the markings). But it’s not our priority right now. Once the fighting is over, we will commence our investigation,” she said.
Unless every single soldier in the AFP is on the battlefield in Marawi it is ridiculous for them to say this is not a priority and that the investigation can be conducted after the fighting ends.  When will it end?  Another month?  Finding out who supplied these arms and stopping the flow of weapons is 100% a priority for the AFP.  Do they want weapons to keep pouring into Marawi? It's this sort of wilful ignorance that allowed the Marawi siege to happen in the first place.  If it is so easy to track where these weapons came from then they had better get on it immediately.

Probably the AFP does not want to rush the investigation because they know it will reveal things that people won't be pleased with. There is corruption in every branch of the Philippine government and the AFP is not excepted.  The building of Marawi has not even commenced and corruption is already creeping into the mix.
http://www.philstar.com/nation/2017/09/16/1739524/p50-b-not-enough-marawi-rehab
More than P50 billion is needed to rehabilitate Marawi, Defense Secretary and Task Force Bangon Marawi chairman Delfin Lorenzana said yesterday.
Citing his visit to the city with President Duterte last week, Lorenzana said his initial estimate of P50 billion to cover the repair and construction of government and private infrastructure would not suffice.
“I think P50 billion is not enough. Talagang grabe ‘yung destruction. When the fighting stops…I will bring you there. You will see how damaged the area is,” he told a press briefing at Malacañang.
Lorenzana said foreign governments have so far pledged around P2 billion. He said Australia pledged P1 billion; China, P85 million; the European Union, P49 million; Japan and Thailand, P100 million each and the United States, P730 million.
Is Lorenzana's eyeball estimate accurate?  Probably not.

10 billion, 20 billion, 30 billion, and now 50 billion is not even enough!  How about they wait till the battle is over before allocating funds and making estimates which they can't reliably make before they have assessed the damage? Because they are getting in on the plunder plan early. Overcharge, use cheap and shoddy material, and pocket the excess. That's how it works. No doubt this is exactly what will be happening in Marawi.  Next year everyone will be reading all about it and pretend to be shocked.

Can you say "pork barrel scam redux?"

This could definitely be the last week of fighting in Marawi. The net is getting tighter and tighter.  Sooner or later it will be time.

http://www.philstar.com/headlines/2017/09/17/1739995/armed-forces-captures-key-maute-base-besieged-marawi
The Philippine military said Sunday it had captured the command center of ISIS group supporters who have besieged Marawi City for nearly four months.
The military said it had captured the militants' control center in a deadly battle lasting five hours that began Saturday in a mosque and another building.
It added that they have subdued the militants and successfully took back Bato Mosque and Amaitul Islamiya Marawi Foundation, which became Maute strongholds.

"This enormous (military) gain further weakened the terrorist group by denying them their erstwhile command and control hub," military chief General Eduardo Año said in a statement.

"As follow up and clearing operations continue, we expect the enemy to yield more previously occupied positions, but not without a fight," he said. "We are ready for that."
All this fighting in Mosques makes one wonder if these guys have any real devotion to Islam. Are all those Muslims upset at Mocha Uson and Duterte for wearing boots inside the Grand Mosque paying attention here?

It will always be premature and foolish to be a date setter as to when the siege will end and Maute is not going out without a fight. This week or not there is still more fighting to be done as Maute makes its last stand.
http://news.abs-cbn.com/news/09/17/17/military-expects-more-firefights-in-marawi-as-troops-push-to-gain-ground
If only the AFP and Duterte had learned that lesson sooner about not setting dates then they could have concentrated on fighting and instead of worrying about arbitrary deadlines.  Maybe next time this happens they won't go blabbing their plans to the media and keep telling everyone that it will be done in 3 days, 7 days, a month!
