Riding the Ferry With the PNP

I was on a ferry recently and the stupidest thing happened. For some reason a large contingent of firemen and PNP officers on board. With all their notepads and backpacks it seemed like they were going to a meeting. About halfway through the trip a group of them made their way upstairs from the cabin below and began to mull around standing the middle of the aisles. As we got closer to our destination the number of PNP officers standing around blocking the walkways grew.

Other riders joined the burgeoning crowd. Two of the men in the picture above are firefighters. They are blocking the entrance to the toilets. But no matter to them. They just stood there blocking the path of anyone who might need to relive himself.

By the end of the journey as we were preparing to dock the place was crowded quite considerably.

Of course what was happening is everyone was preparing to disembark. It happens all the time that as the ferry approaches the dock people start to crowd the doors so they can exit speedily. Such action is not safe. Nobody should be crowding the aisles while the ferry is in motion. If there were an emergency, if there were an accident, tragedy could happen quickly.

Which makes it all the more troublesome that PNP officers and firemen, people who should be familiar with safety precautions, created such an unsafe environment by standing around blocking the aisles. If these officers had started crowding the exits to hastily disembark 5 or 10 minutes before the end it would have been understandable. Unsafe but understandable. However these men began waiting to disembark halfway through the trip!

Why didn't the crew make an announcement that all passengers must remains seated until the ferry has come to a complete stop? You certainly would not see this type of thing on an airplane. What's the difference here? There isn't one. Crowding the aisles so you can get off in a hurry is unsafe and rude.

As unsafe as the PNP made the trip there is something even more awful and even more unsafe about this ferry.

Those are the lifejackets for the upstairs deck. See how they are far away from the passengers and each one is wrapped in plastic. If the boat were to capsize no one would have access to a lifejacket without first making his way to this corner of the boat and then unwrapping it. Which is to say no one would have access to a lifejacket if there was a need.

Why not place a jacket under each seat like in an airplane?

But really we all know safety is not given a premium in the Philippines. From construction workers wearing slippers to road work with no barriers to motorcyclists who ride with their small children safety is simply not given much thought.

No Pinoys or Filipinos Hurt in Accident or Natural Disaster

Another collection of headlines of notices from the DFA that no Pinoy was hurt in any attack or natural disaster overseas. I love these headlines. Shows how silly the DFA is since every singe time there is a shooting in the middle of nowhere or an earthquake or riots they have to let everyone know the Filipinos are safe. Also shows just how large the Filipino diaspora really is.

Some people say it shows the DFA cares because they just want to let people know everyone is safe. I say its shows the DFA is stupid and opportunistic to show that they "care" because if your loved one far away got killed would you want to learn about it on the internet? It's rude, heart pounding, and needlessly fear inducing. They should inform the families privately if anyone got hurt.

No Filipinos were reported hurt in two recent terrorist attacks in Pakistan where close to 40 people were confirmed dead, the Department of Foreign Affairs said Sunday.
Would these OFWs working in places like Pakistan feel safe in Mindanao? I think so.

Maybe not affected by the quake but any Pinoy in the Arctic climate of Alaska is certainly freezing his tropical butt off!

The Philippine Embassy in the United Kingdom is closely coordinating with authorities in Ireland concerning the case of a Filipino seafarer who died when a steel container dropped on him at Southbank Quay in Dublin on November 14.
Dennis Gomaz Regana was killed while doing lashing work as part of container lifting operations on his vessel, MV Francop, an Antigua and Barbuda-flagged containership.
“The Embassy will make sure that his family will receive the benefits stipulated in his employment contract as well as the benefits from his OWWA membership. We will also work with Ireland to ensure that this tragedy will not happen to any Filipino worker again,” the envoy added.
According to Welfare officer Connie Marquez, the deceased seafarer’s active Overseas Worker Welfare Administration membership ensures that Regana’s family will receive death benefits of P200,000, funeral grant of P20,000, scholarship grant for one of his children until he or she finishes college, and a startup capital of P15,000 to enable his family to start a small business.
That is an absolutely horrible accident!

85 Filipinos in Aleppo. Who knew? So desperate to escape the Philippines and make good money they will work in the middle of a war zone.

“The Philippine Embassy in Jakarta reported that so far, none of the 220 members of the Filipino community in the area were among the fatalities or injured due to the tsunami,” the DFA said in a statement.
It's amazing how they can so quickly verify this but the DND still cannot verify whether or not there are foreign terrorists in Mindanao.

There are around 25,000 Filipinos in France, majority of them are in Paris.
This incident happened at a bakery which makes it a surprise no Filipino was hurt since Filipinos love bakeries. On second thought French bakeries are likely not selling the bland treats so much loved in the Philippines.

Martial Law: We Cannot Do It

Martial law 2019 has barely gotten underway and already the DND has admitted defeat in the war against the insurgency.

    https://newsinfo.inquirer.net/1070801/we-cant-end-insurgency-this-year
We cannot do it (end insurgency) this year because that is a big problem,” Lorenzana said on the sidelines of Tuesday’s joint Department of National Defense-AFP new year’s call in Camp Aguinaldo, pointing out that the communist insurgency has been festering for the last 50 years.
“We cannot end it in one year. But if our target would be the remaining three years of President Duterte’s presidency, we can probably do it,” he added.
Even as Lorenzana disputed the feasibility of the AFP’s 2019 target, he assured the public that it was “attainable” in a few years, explaining that localized peace talks and the implementation of the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program, or E-CLIP, had been working to convince droves of New People’s Army (NPA) fighters to surrender.
The defense secretary placed the current NPA strength at approximately 4,000 regular members, while its militia and underground movement, at some 50,000 members.
“We have to move [the 2019 deadline] because it is not yet attainable. There are still too many things to handle,” Lorenzana said.
Did the DND not know the insurgency "is a big problem" last year when they announced the NPA would be defeated by the 2nd quarter of 2019? Why would the DND crow about the imminent defat of the NPA but then suddenly reverse course and claim they could do it in three years time? Is this a backhanded way of setting up martial law for the next three years?

It is important to note that the DND does not want to defeat the insurgency.  They don't want to crush it and blast it to smithereens.

    http://www.pna.gov.ph/articles/1058714
"The DND fully supports the President’s decision not to employ a purely military solution to ending the communist insurgency in the country," Lorenzana said in a statement forwarded to reporters at 9:54 p.m. Friday.
This, he said, is emphasized by the national government's initiative to work closely with the local government units in pursuing localized peace talks, community support and development, and promotion of good governance, all aimed at neutralizing the insurgency threat.
This also includes the implementation of the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Programs or E-CLIP, which helps former rebels start their lives anew by providing financial, livelihood, and educational assistance, psychosocial support, and housing, the defense chief added.
"While focused military actions will weaken their armed component, it is the promise of a better life for their families that drives their members to return to civil society and the fold of the law," Lorenzana added.
The DND chief also said that the government has the momentum, support and resources to render the Communist Party of the Philippines - New People's Army - National Democratic Front (CPP-NPA-NDF) strategically and politically irrelevant by 2022.
"By the end of President Rodrigo Duterte’s term, the NPA will be reduced into a purely police problem of running after robbers, criminals, arsonists, and extortionists," he said.
Instead the DND is hoping to merely reduce the insurgency to a "police problem" via peace talks and the E-CLIP program which gives a financial incentive for surrendering.

    http://www.pna.gov.ph/articles/1058527
(Just surrender. I'll provide you with land, I'll start with land reform then housing. And for the meantime that you are finding a way to earn a living, I'll let TESDA enter with livelihood programs, then DSWD for the ways they can help)," Duterte said in a speech at the launching of the Negosyo Serbisyo sa Barangay in Masbate on Wednesday.
The President said the government has enough money to fund the livelihood and housing programs for the rebel surrenderers, as he urged them to yield at the earliest time possible.
The government has enough money to fund the livelihood of surrendering rebels but has to borrow money for infrastructure projects? We can only take Duterte's words at face value or not even then. One moment he urges rebels to surrender and the next he says bombing them would be so much easier.
     https://news.abs-cbn.com/news/01/10/19/duterte-things-would-be-easier-if-only-we-could-bomb-communists
President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday said things would have been easier for the government if it could just drop bombs in lairs of communist rebels, as he urged members of the New People’s Army to just surrender and return to the fold of the law.
In a speech in Masbate, Duterte said drone technology provided by allies like Israel and the United States have made it easy to spot communist camps.
He said bombing communist lairs would have easily solved the insurgency problem in the country but he decided against it to spare innocent civilians.
If the targeted dropping of bombs is a problem then why not send in the AFP to the camps that are found? That would reduce collateral deaths. It's hard to see where he draws the line about not wanting violence and threatening more violence. Remember during his early days he vowed he would not kill NPA members because they are fighting for an ideology so they aren't criminals. Now he is all for arming everyone in the country to fight the NPA as well as giving free housing and jobs to those who surrender.
    https://newsinfo.inquirer.net/1071721/duterte-likely-to-order-arming-of-everyone-if-npa-steps-up-attacks
“I’m telling the NPA, I do not want to arm the people. But if you continue doing that, I will allow the purchase of individual firearm. Even the mayors, I will give them firearms. I have no choice,” he said.
But he said if the rebels would “tone down” with their violent activities, he would be willing to go back to peace negotiations.
“But if they can tone down, no ambush, no killing of my policemen and my military, we can talk,” he said.
War and peace and war and peace. The cycle continues. Sad how the year has just begun and already predictions one and four of my predictions for martial law in 2019 have already been fulfilled. But as Bob Dylan sang, "you don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows."

The wind is blowing in the DOJ alright and it smells like the fetid miasma which hovers over the polluted waters of Manila Bay.
    https://newsinfo.inquirer.net/1071887/600-terrorists-stricken-off-revised-doj-petition-vs-reds
The Department of Justice (DOJ) has removed about 600 individuals and groups from a list of “terrorists” in a petition it filed last year to declare the Communist Party of the Philippines and its armed wing, the New People’s Army (NPA), as “terrorist and outlawed organizations.”
In an amended petition it submitted to the Manila Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 19 on Jan. 3, the DOJ kept on its terrorist list CPP founding chair Jose Maria Sison, alleged NPA National Operations Command chief Jorge Madlos, alleged NPA southern Luzon commander Jaime Padilla and alleged CPP Visayas Commission head Francisco Fernandez.
Also included on the much shorter list were alleged Visayas CPP deputy secretary Cleofe Lagtapon, alleged CPP Mindanao Commission secretary Antonio Cabanatan and alleged Mindanao NPA leaders Leonido Nabong and Myrna Sularte.
Remember last year when the DOJ first complied and submitted this petition? Remember all the outrage from various groups and fear from individuals that they would be targeted? Remember how the DOJ slowly whittled the list down? Now 600 people are being taken off the list. That is practically everyone on the whole list! Only eight people are left! From over 600 to just 8!

    https://www.sunstar.com.ph/article/422745
Malacañang and the Justice department have yet to confirm the existence of such a list.
Well now we know not only does this list exist but it is all bunk! What else are we being told is nothing but bunk? How about MILF disarmament if the BOL is fully enforced?

    https://newsinfo.inquirer.net/1070371/milf-offers-to-secure-cotabato-city-against-possible-attacks
“The MILF’s BIAF is ready to provide even a battalion of fighters to help secure the peripheries of Cotabato City should the proper government agencies request for augmentation,” he told the Inquirer by telephone.
What would be the proper government agency to make such a request? The DND? The President himself? The difference between a private army and the MILF is that the MILF is an Islamic terrorist group. If the BOL passes they will be am Islamic terrorist group with their very own nation. Why should they disband their army as they have promised? It doesn't make any sense. And don't forget, never forget, the BOL is a part of the peace agreement with the MILF and has nothing to do with the Bangsomoro people. It is specifically part of the agreement with the MILF which means it benefits primarily the MILF which is why the MILF will be running the transition government until 2022. After that they will inevitably run the government through their own political party.
    https://newsinfo.inquirer.net/1070808/defense-chief-bangsamoro-plebiscite-a-big-dnd-challenge
The BOL is a key component of the 2014 final peace deal between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) after decades of conflict in Mindanao that claimed more than 120,000 lives.
The Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF), which broke away from the MILF, could also pose a threat to the planned plebiscite.
“Although they (BIFF) only have a few men, they are still a problem,” Lorenzana said.
He said the ratification of the BOL would install new leaders from the ranks of the MILF.
“Hopefully, they can help us police the area so that we can eradicate once and for all the terrorist Dawla Islamiya, BIFF and Maute group,” he said.
It's all laid out right here. Nothing is being hid but who's paying attention? The BOL is a key component of the 2014 peace deal and will install new leaders from the ranks of the MILF. Lorenzana hopes the MILF can police the area and eradicate the other Islamist groups which means he does not put much faith in MILF's stated intention to disarm. But why does he think the BIFF is a problem when they have voiced support for the BOL?

    https://newsinfo.inquirer.net/1069006/biff-were-not-out-to-sabotage-bol-plebiscite
It's as if Lorenzana is saying you can't trust the word of terrorists.
    https://newsinfo.inquirer.net/1072494/army-foils-biff-bomb-plot-seizes-ieds-nabs-5-rebels
He said the BIFF were planning to bomb civilian and military targets in urban communities in Sultan Kudarat and North Cotabato.
So why is the government trusting the word of the MILF?

    Duterte's Anti-Catholic Intellectual Discourse

Throughout his tenure as President Duterte has had plenty to say to and about the Catholic Church. None of it good. Many of his remarks have irked the faithful as well as the faithless due to the obscene nature of his comments. But it seems everyone was wrong. Everyone underestimated what Duterte was actually doing and saying. All of his remarks against the church have been part of one long sustained intellectual discourse against the unreasonableness of the dogmas of Roman Catholicism and Papal dominion within the hearts and minds of the Filipino people.

    https://newsinfo.inquirer.net/1070086/palace-dutertes-attacks-on-church-an-intellectual-discourse
Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said Duterte’s harsh words against the country’s largest religion were only meant to question the validity of some of the Church’s teachings.
“I would not call that abusive,” Panelo said in an interview with ABS-CBN News Channel, referring to the President’s attacks on the Catholic Church.
I call that intellectual discourse questioning the validity of certain doctrines of your religion,” he added.
Let us then make a brief attempt at ferrying out this discourse and see if we can put it together. I shall have to start from the beginning in June 2016 and follow the threads of the discourse as he weaves it into one beautiful tapestry. The focus will be on the most salient theological pronouncements he has made and they will be presented in chronological order.

I believe in one God Allah. Period,” he said during his last flag ceremony as Davao City mayor. Allah is the name of the God worshipped by Muslims.
Duterte said he has been at odds with the Catholic Church because of its opposition to artificial family planning methods. He noted that in Davao City, pills, ligation and other birth control methods are accessible to couples.
“I go against the Church because its position is not realistic,” the tough-talking leader said.
Duterte, however, went beyond Catholic doctrines and questioned the relevance of the scriptures themselves.
“Those were written 3,000 years ago.  Ano ba pakialam natin sa kanilang sinulat?” he said.

“What I don’t like really is ‘yun bang takutin ka. Pagka maliit pa tayo, magpunta tayo ng impiyerno, magpunta tayo ng impiyerno, kung ano man sunugin ng impiyerno na,” said Duterte, who himself uses colorful threats against criminals and terrorists.
(What I don’t like really is how it makes you fearful. When we are small, we are told we will go to hell, whatever, we will burn in hell.)
The “Iglesia ni Duterte,” meanwhile, will not be as strict and will condone vices otherwise frowned upon by the religious.
Walang bawal. Inom, sige inom. Babae, ay, sige hanggang patayin ka ng asawa mo. Madali man na magpatay ng asawa, ‘yung husband ninyo, ‘yung 'legal,'” said the President.
(Nothing is prohibited. You can drink and drink. You can have as many women as you want until your spouse kills you. It’s easy to kill a spouse, your husband, in a "legal" way.)
Duterte then suggested a way to kill one’s philandering spouse slowly but surely. “Lagyan mo ng extra two spoonfuls ‘yang kanyang ulam, ibigay mo. Two years' time, papalpak ang kidney niyan. ‘Wag mo na i-dialysis, sabihin mo, ‘yan na sigurong suwerte mo,’” he said.
(Put two extra spoonfuls in their food, have them eat it. In two years' time, their kidney will fail. Don’t let them go through dialysis, say, "That’s just your luck.")

“Do not believe that you will go to hell... There is no such thing as heaven and hell. You know it would need a very stupid God if he creates me as a human being and at the end of my earthly life he would just send me to hell,” Duterte said in his latest rantings against the Catholic Church in the country during a convention of the Philippine Association of Water Districts in Davao City.
“God is alpha and omega, the beginning and end. He sees everything. You have free will but just the same, God knows that you’re going to hell so why the heck create me if you let me suffer?” he added.
“If you’re the creator of life, then create another one but not me. You know (this is my) universal identity so you can’t tell me to change. ‘Mayor, do not say bad words, be courteous to visitors.’”
“In the meantime, we try to survive in this planet and we can only pray to the true God. Their God, with all the pageantry, look at their gold cross,” he said.
“I thought Christ was crucified on a wooden cross?”
Duterte, a baptized Catholic who claims to believe in God but not in religion, has been badmouthing the Catholic Church, some of whose bishops have criticized alleged extrajudicial killings in his war on drugs.

"You created something perfect and then you think of an event that would tempt and destroy the quality of your work," he continued.
"Tsuk tsak lang 'yun ng nanay pati tatay mo wala ka pang kasali tapos ngayon may original sin ka. Tanginang klase – anong klaseng relihiyon 'yan? 'Yan ang hindi ko matanggap. What a stupid proposition," said an incensed Duterte.
(That was your mother and father's deed, you weren't born yet, but now you have original sin. What kind of religion is that? I can't accept it.)
"I believe there is a universal mind. But [to] what extent is the influence of the – I cannot picture him as a human being…But I really believe, i have this faith and abiding thing about – but don't believe in religion," he said.

That is fiction," he said.

How people from 3,000 years ago predict or project what is happening today? You build a chapel on your own house and pray there, you don’t have to go to church to pray for these idiots,” Duterte said in his speech during the groundbreaking of the Davao City Bulk Water Supply Project.
    December 29, 2019

    https://www.rappler.com/nation/219912-duterte-speech-christian-belief-trinity-silly
“Magdasal ka na sa isang Diyos, magdasal ka pa dito sa santong yawa. Isa lang ang Diyos. (You’re already praying at one God, then you’re going to pray at these cursed saints. There’s only one God.) There’s only one God, period. You cannot divide God into 3, that’s silly,” said the President.
Before attacking the Holy Trinity doctrine, Duterte said Jesus Christ is “unimpressive” because he had allowed himself to be nailed on the cross.
“‘Yong Diyos mo, pinako sa krus. Tangina. Nakakawala ng bilib. Ako ang Diyos, tapos ipako mo ako? Putangina. Sabihin ko, ‘Lightning, ubusin mo ito. Sunugin mo lahat ng mga erehes,'” said Duterte.
(Your God was nailed on the cross. Fuck. How unimpressive. I’m God and you will crucify me? Motherfucker. I’d tell them, ‘Lightning, finish all of them. Burn all the non-believers.')
The passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ is among the central doctrines of Christian faith, with Christians believing that Jesus sacrificed himself to save the world from sin.
The President likewise belittled the belief in saints, whom he previously called as “fools” and “drunkards.”
“‘Yong iba, ‘yong mga Santa Catalina, Santa Ana, Santo Tomas, San Sebastian, Santo Rodrigo, wala iyan… ‘Di ko nga kilala ‘yan. Look, those documents were written – if at all – 3,000 years ago. Anong pakialam nila sa buhay natin?” asked Duterte.
(Saint Catalina, Saint Anne, Saint Thomas, Saint Sebastian, Saint Rodrigo, they’re nothing… I don’t know them. Look, those documents were written – if at all – 3,000 years ago. Why would they care about our lives now?)
“Sino sumulat? Sino ‘yong si Santo Tomas? ’Di nga natin alam kung sino ‘yon. Baka pangalan ng baka o kamel ‘yan noon,” he added.
(Who wrote about them? Who’s Saint Thomas? We don’t know who they are. That might even be a name for a cow or camel then.)
How does all this fit together?

First off Duterte announces he believes in only one God and his name is Allah. Ostensibly that would make Duterte a Muslim. This would explain his anti-trinitarianism. Islam does not believe in a God that is one in substance and three in person. But many of his other statements don't jibe with Islam either.

For instance he invites people to join the Church of Duterte where anything goes. More like Pleasure Island than a church. Islam has strict moral rules which Duterte's ideal church flaunts. No drinking for one. Islam also has its own version of the afterlife but Duterte does not believe in hell or heaven.

Duterte calls the creation story stupid but the creation story in Islam is not all that different from what is found in Genesis. God creates the world and Adam is tempted by Satan to eat the forbidden fruit. Islam finds great influence from the Bible considering Noah, Abraham, and Moses to be prophets yet Duterte says the Bible is irrelevant as it was written 3,000 years ago. He calls Jesus unimpressive but Islam also reveres him as a prophet.

How can any of that be tied into an intellectual discourse? Duterte's doctrines do not make any sense. He is all over the place saying whatever comes to his head. I belive in Allah, the church is full of shit, the trinity is silly, the bible is irrelevant, the last Monday of the month of January will be a special working holiday called National Bible Day.

    Wait. What?

"As a predominantly Christian nation and the largest Christian nation in the Asia Pacific, this Act recognizes the value of the Holy Bible as the core of Christian faith," it said.
I give up. If anyone else can make hay out of these theological statements of Duterte then have at it. As it stands Duterte is simply saying the most offensive things he can against the Catholic Church with the sole purpose of offending and not because he has any real philosophical or theological objections to their doctrines. His arguments reflect a childish hedonism rather than any systematic thinking through the issues.
