A Literal Comedian Assumes Senate Leadership

Philippine politics is now a joke. Literally. It's not like it wasn't a joke before but now the point  has been driven home quite forcefully.

Tito Sotto is literally a comedian. A joker.  A clown. Pimentel is handing the reigns over to a veritable clown.  Now the whole nation will be forced to eat his bulaga!

Actor, singer, comedian, musician, TV host.  These jobs all prepared him for the Senate presidency because we all now Filipinos demand to be entertained. "Here we are now entertain us" is their mantra.

Remember last year when Tito Sotto's wikipedia page was vandalised and went unnoticed for about two days?

A plagiarist and a long-standing political joke! But That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore.

Newly elected Senate President Vicente Sotto III bade a temporary goodbye to Eat Bulaga, the country's longest-running noontime television show that helped propel him to power.
"Papaalam na muna ako (I will temporarily leave)," Sotto told reporters on Monday, May 21.
Asked if this means he would no longer host the show even on Thursdays and Saturdays where there are no Senate sessions, he said: "'Di na siguro, 'di na muna. Usap kami ni Vic and Joey and Tony Tuviera." (Not yet, for now. I will talk to Vic, Joey, and Tony Tuviera.)
Sotto, his brother Vic Sotto, and friend Joey de Leon are part of the triumvirate TVJ. Tuviera, meanwhile, is the show's producer.
In an earlier interview with Rappler, Sotto attributed his "practical" thinking to the show that propelled him to power. He would not be the politician that he is today, he said, if not for Eat Bulaga!
So let me get this straight.  Eat Bulaga!, a noontime variety show which he hosted, is what propelled him to power? Sotto would not be the politician he is today if not for this show?? Not legal training, not university scholarship, not real world experience with people or in government institutions but his work as a comic host of a silly variety show made him the politician he is today??

And he STILL hosted this show even as a Senator and now will only "temporarily leave" because of his new duties as Senate President!

Is there any nation on earth like the Philippines which has a literal comedian heading one of it's branches of government?

  1. I read an article online but cannot recall the name or where I saw it. It had pictures of both politician and their educational background. Needless to say it was a riot to read. Most of India's politicians attended schools like Harvard, Princeton, Yale, MIT, Cambridge and so on. Then for the Philippine politicians it said actor, actress, comedian, boxer and those who did have a college degree not one studied earned a degree outside of the Philippines.

  2. David,
Did you see the headlines in todays Inquirer and Star, 23 May? "Palace concerned about Chinese bomber in the shoals." Another flip by Duterte or is he trying to cover up selling out to China?

    1. He can't cover up what has happened in the SCS and his kowtowing to China. It's too well known and obvious. Who can tell what his motivations are or what he is really thinking? He is not consistent at all in his statements or his actions.
