Theological Fails

Theological fails are to be found pretty much everywhere in the Philippines.  From the idolatry of the  Roman Church to the false cults like Mormonism, theological illiteracy abounds. Some of the Mormon converts don't even know Mormon doctrine. I know because I have talked with a few and they only got into it because the Mormons kept coming to the door so they relented or the Mormons bowled them over with kindness and even teaching them a skill like massage. These poor converts have no idea that Mormons believe God is an exalted flesh and blood man and that we can become just like him, i.e. a God.

Here are two theological fails from the Philippines.

Glory to his name aka Down at the Cross. A popular Baptist hymn. You'd think they would get the lyrics right because no doubt they have sung it so many times.

"There to my sin was the blood applied."  WRONG!  The correct lyric is "There to my HEART was the blood applied." How did this typo creep past the editor twice? On the projector and in the church bulletin.

This incorrect lyric caused no small amount of confusion. Everyone paused and stumbled at the word sin. Some kept on singing the correct lyric. Some sang the word sin and you could hear the "record scratch, uh-oh questioning moment" in their voice as they realised the mistake.

The theological fail is that men need a new heart. The Bible says "Circumcise you hearts," "Create in me a clean heart," "Out of the heart cometh all kinds of evils," "as a man thinketh in his heart, so he is," and "the heart is deceitful above all things." Sin is not a thing or substance. It's a breaking of the law, a disposition away from the good, the absence of good. Nothing can be applied to sin because sin is not a thing that needs to be healed. Sin is washed away by the blood when the blood is applied to the heart where it reigns thereby healing the heart.

Many churches in the Philippines use the projector during services and it's not something I like. Especially when the pastor turns his sermon into a power point presentation. The funniest projector typo yet has been the transformation of the lyric "Let angels prostrate fall," from All Hail the Power of Jesus' Name, to "Let angels prostate fall."  Really wish I had been quick enough to snap a picture of that one.

Theological fail number 2:

http://www.interaksyon.com/huwag-tularan-replacing-inri-on-eve-of-human-rights-day-baclaran-church-reminds-that-jesus-was-an-ejk-victim/
There is no official ecclesiastical statement in this article or in any other article I have found concerning this event which states that Jesus was an EJK victim. But I will take the headline at face value and run with it.

How would it make any theological sense to say that Jesus was an EJK victim? Stop the killings because Jesus was a victim too?  But Jesus came to die.  "For this hour have I come," He prayed in the Garden of Gesthemane.  Would the Roman Catholics, the See of Peter, try to prevent the death of Chirst if they had a time machine? Peter himself said, after Christ spoke of his suffering and death, "Lord, this shall not be unto thee" and Jesus replied, "Get thee behind me Satan."

Secondly Jesus was not an EJK victim. He died fully under the law. Let's break out the Nicene Creed. The second section dealing with Jesus.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds; God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God; begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made.
Who, for us men for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; He suffered and was buried; and the third day He rose again, according to the Scriptures; and ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of the Father; and He shall come again, with glory, to judge the quick and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end.
Christ was brought before Caiaphas, Pilate, and Herod. He was condemned by Jewish law and died under Roman law. Pontius Pilate, the ruler of Jerusalem, gave a lawful sentence of condemnation and death. The point is not whether it was just or unjust. The point is he did not die outside the law. If Jesus had been an EJK victim then he would have been killed in the Garden of Gethsemane when they came to take him with swords and spears and a great multitude. And let's never forget Christ laid down his life for us. He wasn't killed or murdered. He was sacrificed.  He is the Shepherd who gave his life for the sheep. So basically this stunt is a denial of the sacrifice of Christ for our sins! That is a huge theological fail. It's also a blasphemous denial of the work and person of Jesus Christ.

The Roman Church wants to insert itself into every controversy in this country as if it is speaking from some moral high ground. It's not. Anyone with a brain knows the Roman Church is corrupt to the core. They had better go back to the books and learn their theological ABC's all over again.

Start with the Nicene Creed.

  1. You don't start with the Nicene Creed...you start with the all time best selling book...The Bible! Take the "Nonsense Creed" and burn it!

All Scripture my friend (2nd TIM 3:16-17)! And Catholics are, without question, the most Biblically ignorant group in the Philippines!

The incorruptible seed (1 PET 1:23) is the word of God (LUKE 8:11) and IS ABLE to save your soul (JAMES 1:21).

The Word of God is living and powerful (HEB 4:12) and works in the hearts and minds of those who believe and obey it (1 THESS 2:13). And they said to one another, “Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?” (LUKE 24:32).

Jesus said man can know the truth by abiding in His word (JN 8:31-32; JN 17:17). But Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life" (JN 6:68). The words of Christ will judge on the last day (JN 12:48).

    1. The Nicene Creed is nothing more than "mere Christianity" in a creedal form. Easy to memorise and helpful for teaching. Everything in the creed is what is taught in the scripture and proclaimed by the church. It is a prefect place to start when teaching Christianity.

    2. "So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God" (ROMANS 10:17). "His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue" (2nd PETER 1:3).

As a newborn babe would crave milk; Man is to desire the sincere milk of THE WORD that he may grow (1st PETER 2:2-3). We are to "SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES" (ACTS 17:11). The SCRIPTURES are literally the "breath of God" (2nd TIMOTHY 3:16-17).

Jesus said, "Man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God" (MATTHEW 4:4). Where might man find these precious words that save (JAMES 1:21)? THE BIBLE!

The Scripture speaks (JOHN 7:38, 19:37). The Scriptures can be read and understood (MATTHEW 21:42; LUKE 24:45). The Scriptures testify of JESUS (JOHN 5:39). Through patience and comfort of the Scriptures we have hope (ROMANS 15:4)!

The 'nonsense creed' is not (as you say) a perfect place to start teaching Christianity! The Word of God is! "The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul" (PSALM 19:7)!

"Immediately many gathered together, so that there was no longer room to receive them, not even near the door. And He preached THE WORD to them" (MARK 2:2). "And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in ALL THE SCRIPTURES the things concerning Himself" (LUKE 24:27).

    3. The Nicene Creed contains what is taught in the Word of God and nothing else. Do you think there are false teachings in the Nicene Creed? Please tell what they are.

  2. There is NO SUBSTITUTE for the word of God, period! Whether it is the Apostles' Creed or the Nicene Creed (or any other that has been produced). The Bible does not need our "tweaking" if you will; it is just fine without man's tampering, altering, tuning.

Paul said, "Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part. But when that which is PERFECT has come, then that which is in part will be done away" (1st CORINTHIANS 13:8-10). When Paul penned these words, the New Testament epistles were in fragments. But by 100 A.D., the final words of the last book (REVELATION) were written. "And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but THESE ARE WRITTEN that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name" (JOHN 20:30-31).

THE BIBLE IS PERFECT! James called it the "perfect law of liberty" (JAMES 1:25). Paul said ALL SCRIPTURE was literally the "Breath of God" (God-breathed/Inspired) and was useful (profitable) for doctrine (teaching), for reproof (rebuking), for correction, for instruction in righteousness (right living), THAT THE MAN OF GOD MAY BE COMPLETE (PERFECT), thoroughly equipped for every good work (2nd TIMOTHY 3:16-17). "As His divine power has given to us ALL THINGS that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue" (2nd PETER 1:3-4). Where can man find the truth (JOHN 8:31-32, 17:17)?

Today, man has more acces to the word of God than any other time in history. Consequently, the devil has produced more imitations (creeds, manuals, catachisms, etc.) than any other time in history! If "theological illiteracy abounds," as you so rightly stated in your article above, what could possibly cure it save the word of God?

Bibles are practically everywhere! Copies of the most precious book can be viewed online for free, downloaded for free, or sent to an individual for free. And if that's not enough, man can go into any bookstore and find a copy of God's word! The longest chapter in the Bible has 176 verses. With the exception of four verses (90, 121, 122, 132), every verse mentions the word of God under one or another of these names: Law, Testimony, Judgments, Statutes, Commandments, Precepts, Word, Ordinances, and Ways. This is what man needs to hear as "faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of God" (ROMANS 10:17)!

I read a story about agents who worked in the counterfeit division of the government. They were so highly trained, that they could spot a phony in a matter of moments. What did they use to train but an original bill; nothing more!

Man DOES NOT NEED any other book friend (including any creed book)! Remember this: "The greatest lie of the devil is to get man to believe him instead of God!" Read the Bible! It is the greatest textbook of all time; and there is NO comparison.

  3. What is it you find fault with in the Nicene Creed? That it isn't the Bible? Much of what is in your comment is not the words of scripture at all. Do you think one must only use the words of scripture when conveying truth? That would be an end to all evangelising and preaching. See Nehemiah 8:8. Do you know that the Nicene Creed stands as a bulwark against erroneous interpretations of the scriptures particularly Arianism which teaches that Jesus Christ is not God but is an exalted creature? I am curious to know exactly what you find fault doctrinally with in the Nicene Creed. Please tell.

  4. Man does not need it, as the word of God is sufficent! What did Ezra read? The Law of the Lord (Ezra 8:2-3), not the 'nonsense creed.'

    Isaiah 55:10-11

  5. Ezra read the law and then used his own words to explain it. Are you going to tell me what you think is nonsense in the Nicene Creed or not? What problems do you have doctrinally wth what is taught in the creed? Do you reject the divinity of Christ? The virgin brith? The death burial and resurrection of Christ? The oneness of God the Father? The procession of the Holy Ghost from the Father? The resurrection of the dead? What problem do you have doctrinally with the Nicene Creed?

  6. There is NO SUBSTITUTE for THE BIBLE, period! The Word of God (ACTS 17:13; 1st THESSALONIANS 2:13) and The Word of the Lord (ACTS 19:10; 1st THESSALONIANS 4:15) are synonymous.

    1. God speaks to man through His word (1st SAMUEL 15:22; JEREMIAH 3:25; MATTHEW 17:5; JOHN 5:37).
    2. Jesus speaks to man through the word (JOHN 5:25; JOHN 18:37; REVELATION 3:20).
    3. The Holy Spirit speaks through the word (JOHN 16:8-13; 1st TIMOTHY 4:1; HEBREWS 3:7).

The Scriptures are called Holy (2nd TIMOTHY 3:15). The Scripture speaks to man (LUKE 24:32; JAMES 4:5); for Paul said, "For what does the Scripture say?" (ROMANS 4:3; GALATIANS 4:30). The Scriptures are perfect and complete (2nd TIMOTHY 3:16-17).

EZEKIEL 2:4-7 - For they are impudent and stubborn children. I am sending you to them, and you shall say to them, ‘THUS SAYS THE LORD GOD.’ As for them, whether they HEAR or whether they REFUSE—for they are a rebellious house—yet they will know that a prophet has been among them. “And you, son of man, do not be afraid of them nor be afraid of their words, though briers and thorns are with you and you dwell among scorpions; do not be afraid of their words or dismayed by their looks, though they are a rebellious house. You shall SPEAK MY WORDS to them, whether they HEAR or whether they REFUSE, for they are rebellious.

MATTHEW 12:3-5 - But He said to them, “Have you not READ what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: how he entered the house of God and ate the showbread which was not lawful for him to eat, nor for those who were with him, but only for the priests? Or have you not READ IN THE LAW that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath, and are blameless?

MATTHEW 15:10 - When He had called the multitude to Himself, He said to them, “HEAR and UNDERSTAND"

MARK 7:14 - When He had called all the multitude to Himself, He said to them, “HEAR ME, EVERYONE, and UNDERSTAND:

MARK 12:10 - Have you not even READ THIS SCRIPTURE: “The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone.

LUKE 4:21 - And He began to say to them, “Today this SCRIPTURE is fulfilled in YOUR HEARING.”

LUKE 8:8 - But others fell on good ground, sprang up, and yielded a crop a hundredfold.” When He had said these things He cried, “He who has ears to HEAR, LET HIM HEAR!”

It's not that man can't read it, hear it, or understand it; it's that man doesn't want to read it, hear it, or understand it (THE BIBLE). The Pharisees were unreachable because they were unteachable! They answered and said to him, “You were completely born in sins, and are you TEACHING US?” And they cast him out (JOHN 9:34).

  7. We are almost into the year 2018. Set before man is the complete and perfect word of God. If the word of the Lord is complete and perfect, and it is, he does not need any creed, hand-book, or manual!

I would NEVER tell a man to read the Apostles' Creed or the Nicene Creed. I would tell him to read "The Book" that lives and abides forever (1st PETER 1:25). I would tell a man to read the Bible (MATTHEW 5:6, 7:7), study it (ACTS 17:11; 2nd TIMOTHY 2:15), desire it (1st PETER 2:2), and meditate on it (PSALM 1:1-2).

The word of God converts the soul of man (PSALM 19:7; JAMES 1:21), heals and delivers (PSALM 107:20), gives life (PSALM 119:50), and understanding (PSALM 119:130). Faith comes from hearing the word of God (ROMANS 10:17).

MATTHEW 4:4 - But He answered and said, “IT IS WRITTEN, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by EVERY WORD that proceeds from the mouth of God.’

JOHN 20:30-31 - And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but THESE ARE WRITTEN that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.

ROMANS 15:4 - For whatever things WERE WRITTEN before were WRITTEN FOR OUR LEARNING, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.

1st CORINTHIANS 10:11 - Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were WRITTEN for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.

HEBREWS 8:10 - For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My LAWS IN THEIR MIND and WRITE THEM ON THEIR HEARTS; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.

Where can man find God's Holy and Inspired word? THE BIBLE!

2nd TIMOTHY 2:23-25 - The word of God converts the soul of man (PSALM 19:7; JAMES 1:21), heals and delivers (PSALM 107:20), gives life (PSALM 119:50), and understanding (PSALM 119:130). Faith comes from hearing the word of God (ROMANS 10:17).

  8. 2nd TIMOTHY 2:23-26 - But avoid foolish and ignorant disputes, knowing that they generate strife. And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient, in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth, and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will.
