Stop Vending On The Side Of The Highway!

One of the most unsafe aspects of the Philippines is major roads are built in a way that they are flanked by houses and businesses with no buffer between them and the highway. That is why speeding trucks will often plow into houses when the driver falls asleep at the wheel or loses his brakes going around a curve. One some highways there are also vendors. It's a recipe for disaster. In fact, recently a tanker plowed into a highway vendor killing him and his niece.

https://mb.com.ph/2026/07/06/vendor-niece-killed-as-tanker-plows-into-food-cart-in-negros-occidental

A 36-year-old vendor and her 17-year-old niece were killed and the vendor’s 19-year-old son was injured after a fuel tanker truck rammed their food cart in Barangay Palaka, Valladolid, Negros Occidental on Sunday, July 5.

Police identified the victims as Ramilie, a resident of Barangay Poblacion, Valladolid, and her minor niece, of E.B. Magalona, Negros Occidental, who was on vacation with her relatives in Valladolid.

Police Master Sgt. Eduardo Combong, traffic investigator of Valladolid Municipal Police Station, said the victims were preparing their food cart when the truck driven by 57-year-old Dionesio of Barangay Handumanan here hit them.

The driver claimed that he dozed off and lost control of the vehicle as he left Candonie, Negros Occidental before dawn early that day to deliver fuel.

Ramilie was declared dead in a hospital while her niece passed away later that night. Mhiko, Ramilie’s son, was injured and recuperating in a hospital here.

Charges for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide were filed by the minor’s family against the driver on Monday, July 6. The family of the vendor and her son have yet to decide.

The College of Allied Medical Health Sciences (CAMHS) Student Council of the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos (UNO-R) in this city where Mhiko is studying is raising funds to assist his family with medical expenses.

Why do so many truckers in the Philippines doze off? Is it due to overwork? In some countries truckers are only allowed to drive a designated number of hours and then must take a break. It's something that should be investigated.

This is certainly a preventable tragedy. Perhaps now the city will ban all vendors from the side of the highway.  Nope!

https://mb.com.ph/2026/07/07/valladolid-reviewing-road-safety-measures-after-fatal-crash

The municipal government of Valladolid in Negros Occidental is reviewing road safety measures for roadside vendors following a fatal accident that claimed two lives in Barangay Palaka on Sunday, July 5.
Mayor Ricardo Presbitero Jr. said Tuesday, July 7, that economic and tourism activities in the area have been temporarily suspended while the local government reassesses the policies governing vendors operating at the site.
The boulevard has become a popular destination for tourists, prompting the barangay council to allow vending activities before the tragedy.
Presbitero said the municipal government has discussed measures that would allow vendors to resume their livelihood once stricter safety protocols are in place. These include designated selling areas and specific hours for setting up food carts and conducting business.
He added that the local government will coordinate with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) for the installation of clearer road markings and traffic signs as well as the stricter enforcement of speed limits on the road.

A boulevard!? NO!! This is a highway. A main thoroughfare. It's not a "boulevard." Take a look at the image below from Google Maps.

Google Maps

While that is likely not the exact location of the accident, it is the same area.

The only way to keep the public safe is to not allow people and vendors in the area. But the sad fact is the city will likely allow it because the poor people to sell their wares somewhere. As if being poor is an excuse to throw all safety precautions out the window. Chucking the rules shows contempt and not compassion for the people.

https://globalnation.inquirer.net/328217/woman-ex-boyfriend-nabbed-in-slay-of-korean-trader

A woman and her former boyfriend were arrested for allegedly killing a South Korean businessman involved in the beauty products business, the Police Regional Office-Central Luzon (PRO-3) said Monday.

The ex-boyfriend was arrested in Angeles City, while the woman was arrested inside the Clark Freeport Zone on Friday, according to PRO-3 director Brig. Gen. Jess Mendez during a press briefing at Camp Crame. He did not disclose the exact location of the arrests.

Mendez identified the woman as Andrea Mones, 23, also known by the alias “Harin,” and her former boyfriend as Aaron Justin Manuel, 27, also known by the alias “Jao.”

The victim was identified as Shin Bongsub, 37.

Shin supposedly met with Manuel and drove him and another individual—whom police did not immediately identify—aboard a Ford Everest going to Mones’ home in Magalang town, Pampanga last Tuesday, according to Mendez.

“They were together because Shin was collecting money from Harin, from Mones,” Mendez explained. “P200,000 was declared.”

After picking up Mones and dropping off the unnamed individual, Manuel allegedly shot Shin in the head, moved his body to the passenger side and drove to General Tinio town in Nueva Ecija to discard his remains and the Ford Everest, Mendez explained.

Afterward, Manuel left aboard a Toyota Corolla and Mones was picked up by a cousin going back to Pampanga, the PRO 3 chief added. He further noted that Mones’ cousin was unaware of the incident.

The Ford Everest was then reported abandoned by a tipster last Wednesday, leading to the discovery of Shin’s body, according to the Central Luzon top cop.

Security footage backtracking led police investigators to identify Manuel and Mones as the suspects and capture them, Mendez said.

He added that a 9mm Taurus pistol was recovered from Manuel as well as 16 pieces of ammunition.

“They planned how to do it. They even bought this gun to be used,” Mendez maintained.

Manuel and Mones were taken into police custody and underwent inquest proceedings for a murder case before the local prosecutor.

Meanwhile, asked whether Shin had been involved in illegal activities, Mendez explained, “Well, so far, we’re looking at the angle that he may also be involved in the distribution of drugs, specifically party drugs, the victim… Their front was the beauty products.”

The Central Luzon police chief also noted that the Embassy of the Republic of Korea was immediately informed of Shin’s death.

Philippine Company Tosses Sacks Of Trash Into The River

In the Philippines litter is a huge problem. This includes illegal dumping. In Iloilo City a company was recently revealed to have been dumping huge sacks of garbage into the Jaro River.

https://www.pna.gov.ph/articles/1277583

A business firm operating a beverage depot in this highly urbanized city is facing the risk of losing its permit to operate while facing cases for violation of environmental laws for dumping expired commodities into the Jaro River.

General Services Office head Neil Ravena said they met the owner of the establishment for a technical conference on Thursday and found some inconsistencies in his statement.

The conference was joined by the Business Process Licensing Office, City Environment and Natural Resources Office, representatives from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the barangay captains of Banuyao and Ticud, where the expired commodities were recovered.

“This is with regard to the disposal of expired commodities to the Jaro River. This is to verify reports and also for the respondent to explain why they are disposing their expired commodities in the Jaro River,” Ravena said in an interview.

The expired commodities were placed inside sacks and dumped into the Jaro River. These were recovered sometime in the second week of this month during the ongoing cleanup activities.

“The reason why we were able to trace him was because of the identical sacks left at his depot,” he said.

The firm owner, according to Ravena, explained that they are trying to repackage the expired drinks for return to the distributor of the bottling company.

These were reportedly placed outside their depot, but were picked up by trisikad (pedicab) and tricycle drivers and disposed without the knowledge of the firm owner.

Ravena said they were able to recover only portions of the 67 sacks that were disposed at the river.

The owner also admitted that they still have 500 sacks left, which they are attempting to return to the bottling company.

Cases for violation of Republic Act 9003, or the Solid Waste Management Act, and the Clean Water Act are expected to be filed next week once the minutes of the technical conference are available.

He will also recommend to Mayor Raisa Trenas the revocation of the establishment’s permit to operate.

This company was banking on nobody actually cleaning the river! But their hopes were dashed when the local government decided to do clean up activities and found these intact sacks which led them to the company.

Only portions of 67 sacks were recovered while the company says they have 500 sacks waiting to be dumped! Well, waiting to be returned to a bottling company. They say the sacks were picked up without their knowledge but how true is that? If it turns out this company knowingly and willingly dumped those sacks into the river they should face the full force of the law.

Of course this is the Philippines so it's likely not going to happen!

A 36-year-old businessman was found dead inside his vehicle in Barangay Loob, San Antonio, Quezon province, early Tuesday morning.

According to PMaj. Kayvin Ballogan, officer-in-charge of the San Antonio Municipal Police Station, they received a call around 2:00 a.m. about a Toyota Innova that had been abandoned along the side of the national highway in the said barangay.

Authorities immediately noticed blood flowing near the car door, and upon checking inside, they discovered the victim’s lifeless body sprawled across the middle seat.

The victim was identified as Nestor Calalo, a resident of Lipa City, Batangas, and the owner of an auto mechanic shop.

He sustained a gunshot wound to the head.

It was later learned that the victim had been missing for several hours. His family had been looking for him after he told them he was heading to the town of Rosario in Batangas on Monday morning.

“May kikitain daw po na sasakyan itong victim kasi nagbabuy and sell,” said Maj. Ballogan.

A few hours after the victim was found, a man known only as alias “Larry” voluntarily surrendered to the police and confessed to the crime.

He was a former employee of the victim.

“Dati niya kasing amo itong victim, parang may alitan sila noon, 'yun ang parang naging motivation niya,” Maj. Ballogan said.

“Parang holdapin daw, ang sabi naman ng asawa may P600,000 na dala," the police chief added.

The money is still missing.

Alias Larry admitted that he met the victim in Barangay Calantas, Rosario, Batangas, at around 11:30 a.m. on Monday.

“Parang pinagtiwalaan ulit niya kasi dati niyang tao,” the San Antonio police chief added.

The suspect also claimed he was with three other men when the crime was committed.

The killing reportedly took place in the same area, where the victim was shot in the head. Larry further stated that he was the one who drove the vehicle to San Antonio.

ABS-CBN News tried to get a statement from Larry, but he refused to give an interview.

The victim’s family also declined to comment.

Authorities are still hunting down the three other suspects allegedly involved in the killing.

A robbery with homicide case is being prepared against the surrendered suspect.

A businessman from Lipa City, Batangas was allegedly shot dead by his former employee in Rosario, Batangas on Monday.
Police identified victim as Nelson Calalo, 36.
Calalo’s body was found in his vehicle in Barangay Loob, this town, on Tuesday.
The suspect Larry surrendered and admitted to the crime to authorities.
Police Major Kayvin Ballogan, municipal police chief, said the suspect had three companions in the crime.
Investigation said Calalo informed his wife on Monday afternoon that he will meet a former employee to look at a vehicle for sale.
Calalo and Larry met in Barangay Calantas, Rosario, Batangas where the victim was shot dead inside his vehicle.
Larry drove the victim’s vehicle to this town and left it on the side of the highway with his body.
Police received a report about an abandoned vehicle and discovered the victim with a bullet wound to the head.
Ballogan said it is possible that the two had a long-standing dispute, and the suspect took advantage of the opportunity to rob the victim, who was allegedly carrying P600,000. The money is still missing.
Police are conducting follow-up investigation and a manhunt against the suspect’s companions.

A 43-year-old businessman was killed in a shooting incident in his laundry shop inside a subdivision in Barangay Bagbag, Novaliches, Quezon City, according to the city police Friday.

In a statement, the Quezon City Police District said that on Monday, the suspect wearing black raincoat and helmet of a ride-hailing service entered the laundry shop and shot the victim multiple times.

The suspect snatched the victim’s gold necklace worth P145,000 and fled towards Quirino Highway onboard a motorcycle.

A special investigation team (SIT) was created.

In a CCTV footage, the suspect was seen at Sabina Market where he allegedly brought the stolen necklace to a goldsmith for repair.

Authorities identified the suspect through the plate number of his getaway motorcycle, which was registered to his wife.

On Wednesday, authorities arrested the suspect at Sitio Pajo Market in Barangay Baesa.

The QCPD identified the suspect as 43-year-old “Mike Joey,” a rider of a ride-hailing service.

His wife later surrendered pieces of evidence, including the motorcycle, tampered plate number, black raincoat, red helmet, sandals, and another helmet used for disguise.

The suspect is now under the custody of the police and will be charged with robbery with homicide before the Quezon City Prosecutor’s Office, according to the QPCD.

“I commend our investigators and operatives who worked tirelessly day and night to identify, track, and apprehend the suspect in just two days,” QCPD acting director  Police Colonel Randy Glenn Silvio said.

“This swift case resolution reflects our commitment to deliver justice and rid our streets of criminals, in line with the directives of the Acting CPNP and the NCRPO Regional Director,” he added.

Authorities in this highly-urbanized city are investigating if the recent killing of a businessman was carried out by a hired gunman.
Police Capt. Francis Depasucat, head of Police Station 1, confirmed that the  gunman — one of three persons of interest — has  been identified by witnesses.
The suspect reportedly has a history of criminal cases, including attempted homicide and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
Depasucat described the shooting as a “well-planned” and “treacherous” attack, noting that the victim was shot from behind in broad daylight, as he stepped out of his car to open his hardware store near a public market in Barangay 12 past 7 a.m.
The victim, 52-year-old engineer Romy, who ran a family-owned business, succumbed to a bullet wound in the head an hour later at a private hospital. His companion, who was still inside the vehicle during the attack, was unharmed.
Ballistics testing revealed that a special type of bullet was used in the assassination, further pointing to a professional hit.
While investigators are initially looking into business or personal motives, Depasucat said they are not ruling out other possibilities.
Contrary to earlier reports,  police clarified that the victim was a supplier and not a contractor.
Despite the progress in the case, Depasucat emphasized that the investigation is ongoing.
He expressed hope that murder charges will be filed  once sufficient evidence is gathered.
Meanwhile, local business leader Frank Carbon urged caution in making public statements, but called the killing a “very brazen act” committed in public view.
He said they are waiting for an official report from the police before releasing a formal statement.
In response to the incident, the Police Regional Office–Negros Island Region (PRO-NIR) assured the public that the situation is under control.
Police Brig. Gen. Arnold Thomas Ibay, PRO-NIR director, stated that all necessary security measures have been implemented.
Citywide alerts have been issued, manhunt operations are ongoing, and coordination with other law enforcement agencies is in full swing.
“We assure the Bacolodnons and the entire Negros Island Region that your police are on top of the situation,” Ibay said, adding that the investigation is being pursued aggressively to bring swift justice to the victim.
Authorities  urged the public to remain calm, vigilant, and cooperative by reporting any information that could assist in solving the case.
