Coronavirus Lockdown: A Philippines Coffee Journey, Face-to-Face, and More!

More news about how the COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines is being handled by the public and the government.

After three years direct international flights to Davao from Hong Kong have been restored.

https://www.pna.gov.ph/articles/1211121
The City Tourism Operations Office (CTOO) announced Wednesday that various international flights will be revived in the city in October.

In an interview, CTOO officer-in-charge Jennifer Romero said the Davao-Jinjiang and the Davao-Hong Kong direct flights will resume on Oct. 8 and Oct. 29, respectively.

Romero said Royal Air will start carrying Davao-Hong Kong flights and vice versa, while Xiamen Air will resume offering the Davao-Jinjiang direct flights.

“Both air routes will be scheduled twice a week with the Davao-Hong Kong flight set on Thursday and Sunday and the Davao-Jinjiang on Wednesday and Sunday,” she said.

Romero hopes the revival of direct flights to Hong Kong and Jinjiang will boost the tourism sector in the city to recover the rate of tourist arrivals lost during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic.

Aside from direct flights to Hong Kong and Jinjiang, the Davao-Singapore direct flight, which resumed in October last year, will also continue under Scoot as parent company Singapore Airlines will end operations of the same flight on Oct. 31.

That is good for tourism.

It is a well known fact that closing schools messed up student's learning not just in the Philippines but all around the world. But now the teachers are at the forefront of recovering learning abilities.

https://mb.com.ph/2023/10/5/teachers-at-the-forefront-of-learning-recovery

There is no denying how the pandemic changed and continues to change the landscape of education across the globe.

In the Philippines, the pandemic presented both challenges and opportunities for teaching and learning.

Being on the frontlines, the pandemic was also a very challenging time for teachers.

It forced them to redefine their ways of teaching so their students could adapt to distance learning modalities such as modular, online, and blended learning.

Amid the threat of the pandemic, teachers were tasked to ensure learning continuity.

As the world shifts back to normalcy post-pandemic, teachers face another challenge: learning recovery.

In celebration of World Teachers’ Day (WTD) on Oct. 5, the Manila Bulletin pays tribute to teachers who experienced a lot of difficulties to ensure that learning will continue even though schools were shut down due to the threat of the pandemic.

For some of the teachers at De Mesa Elementary located in Brgy. San Gregorio Municipality of Alaminos, Province of Laguna, while the pandemic paved the way for new teaching methods, a greater focus should be given to the learning recovery of the students.

“The pandemic had a devastating impact on learning,” said Grade 2 adviser Grace Maleon–Endriga.

To ensure learning would continue despite the suspension of face-to-face classes, Endriga explained that the school crafted the Learning Recovery Plan (LRP), which served as a guide in “conducting various types of activities, interventions, and remediation to address the learning gaps brought by the pandemic.”

While implementing the LRP, teachers expected that it would be hard for the students to transition from distance learning to face-to-face learning. However, through the cooperation of the school stakeholders, interventions were given to students to help close learning gaps and difficulties during the pandemic.

Lester Buera, a Grade 5 adviser, finds using technology effective when it comes to learning recovery.

Despite the threat of the pandemic, teachers were considered frontline workers tasked with ensuring the continuity of education for their students.

For Gerlie Castillo, a Grade 3 adviser, the emotional well-being of the students was also of utmost priority.

“Educators play a critical role in the emotional well-being of their students and are often the first point of contact for students experiencing mental health issues,” she said. “Teachers must receive proper training and education on mental health issues so that they can be aware of students facing difficulties,” she added.

Castillo noted that teachers should “foster positive relationships with their students, create classroom environments more conducive to learning, and meet students' developmental, emotional, and academic needs to cope with the new socialization in their environment.”

With the opening of a new school year, teachers underscored the need to assess the student's learning capability and implement appropriate interventions to ensure learning recovery.

For Endriga, learning assessment is crucial to address learning gaps among students. She explained that learning assessment is a crucial factor in evaluating students' progress and learning.

If they messed it up during the pandemic how can they be trusted to fix it now?

Marcos continues to repeat himself. How many times will he say that the pandemic taught us not to rely on imports?

https://newsinfo.inquirer.net/1842197/pandemic-taught-us-not-to-rely-on-importation-says-marcos

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said on Friday that the COVID-19 pandemic taught the Philippines that it should not rely on importation.

Marcos, the concurrent Agriculture Secretary, made this remark as he was distributing various government assistance to the local government of Tangalan, Aklan.

(We learned during the pandemic when we could not import. We could not import because there were no available ships.)

Marcos reiterated that the government is actively trying to improve local agricultural production, which includes crop production, fishing, and livestock breeding.

(We got too used to importation. Now, the food supply is in a tight spot, which is why we were forced to import expensive food. That is why we will change that. We will change that. What we will do is strengthen the agriculture sector.)

To recall, Marcos had approved a series of sugar, fish, and rice imports since the beginning of the year.

I think the whole world learned this as supply chain issues caused shortages and inflation globally.

One foreigner survived the pandemic in the Philippines by growing coffee in his backyard.

https://www.asiamediacentre.org.nz/features/a-philippines-coffee-journey/

It was February 2020 when I arrived in the Philippines to be with my Filipino wife. Little did I know that a nationwide lockdown would be imposed that would be extended for more than a year, becoming one of the world’s longest and strictest. Unable to return home to Christchurch, my wife and I decided to settle in Indang, Cavite--- a provincial town about two hours away from Manila - to avoid the COVID-19 infections ravaging the capital.

With nothing to do during the pandemic, I discovered some old coffee trees while exploring the farm we lived on. I felt lucky to see up close red coffee cherries sprouting on trees ready for harvest. It was only then I was reminded that the Philippines is a major coffee-producing country and one of the few that grow all four varieties of beans - Arabica, Robusta, Excelsa, and Liberica.

To keep my sanity during the pandemic, I did my own research on the harvest and processing of coffee.  It was mostly a solo venture that became an everyday routine. Early in the morning, I  picked the cherries, before I washed and dried them in the sun in makeshift drying beds. In the afternoon, I manually took off the skin of the green beans, and “roasted” batches in a wok. I ground up the roasted beans, brewed them, and the result : An authentic DIY bean-to-cup coffee experience!

My personal hands-on experience with coffee made me realise the complex science behind it, given the many bean defects that I produced. I searched on where to get proper training on coffee farming and processing and got in touch with the Cavite State University’s National Coffee Research, Development, and Extensions Center (NCRDEC)--- the Philippines’ leading institution on coffee research and innovation. The NCRDEC provided me with the practical knowledge and training on the proper way of harvesting and processing coffee, which curtailed my trial-and-error experiments that produced bad coffee.

After a year of learning about coffee, I was able to produce better-quality single origin beans. The validation came when my coffee won awards during the 2022 Regional Coffee Cupping Competition in Cavite--- First place in the Robusta category, Second Place in the Excelsa Category, and First Place in the Coffee Blend Category.

Those successes were the motivation to pursue more training on the various fields of coffee: Post-Harvest Processing from the NCRDEC, Roasting Skills from the UCC Coffee Academy, and Barista Training from the Global Coffee School. I was also fortunate to be granted scholarships to participate in two courses accredited by the US-based Specialty Coffee Association (SCA): Green Coffee and Sensory Skills, and Basic Agronomy and Nursery Management sponsored by the Barista & Coffee Academy of Asia (BCAA) and PhilCafe.

That's better than siting around doing nothing.

Assumption College is celebrating its first Face-to-face homecoming since the pandemic began.

https://www.cnnphilippines.com/lifestyle/2023/10/9/assumption-college-first-f2f-velada-homecoming-since-pandemic.html

Assumption College San Lorenzo will celebrate its 131st year on October 14-15, 2023 with this year’s traditional Old Girls Day 2023, the Assumption community’s annual homecoming event, and its first face-to-face gathering since the pandemic started, which calls for “A Celebration,” coincidentally this year’s theme of the event. The much-awaited event is a strong tradition in the Assumption community and celebrates the gift of friendship, love, and life among the alumnae and among the jubilarians celebrating their milestones this year.

This year’s host will be the Silver Jubilarians, Assumption College High School Batch 1998, whose tagline ACcelerate98, aims to give back to the community by ACcelerating education, moving forward from the pandemic.

According to Batch 1998, “Among the worst impacts of the pandemic in the Philippines is the deterioration of our education system. With the funds raised by ACcelerate98, it is our hope to accelerate the recovery of our education system, starting with the eight (8) Assumption mission schools nationwide, to help our children get back on track to maximize their potential,”

They are going to raise funds as if that will help the basically irreparable Philippine education system.

The number of new COVID-19 cases was up very slightly during the first week of October.

https://www.philstar.com/headlines/2023/10/10/2302666/philippines-sees-1264-new-covid-19-cases-first-week-october

The Department of Health said Tuesday that there were 1,264 additional COVID-19 cases recorded in the past week.

In a bulletin, the DOH said an average of 181 cases were recorded daily from October 2 to 8. The agency noted that this average was 3% higher compared to the cases reported from September 25 to October 1.

Among the additional cases, 12 had severe and critical illnesses.

There were 272 patients in severe and critical conditions, constituting 9% of the total COVID-19 admissions in the country.

The Philippines had 3,062 active COVID-19 cases as of Monday. More than 4 million Filipinos have recovered from COVID-19 since the pandemic started in 2020.

According to data from the health department, only 12.2% of the 1,524 beds in intensive care units were utilized, and 18.4% of the 12,496 non-ICU beds were occupied.

The DOH also confirmed six deaths in the past week, one of which occurred in the last two weeks. The death toll from COVID-19 in the Philippines reached 66,702.

Over 78 million Filipinos have received their coronavirus vaccines. However, only 23 million have gotten booster shots.

It's still hardly anything to worry about.

Prophetic Visions of the Philippines

I found this list of prophetic visions of the Philippines on Facebook. Let's check it out.

PROPHETIC VISION OF THE PHILIPPINES

PROPHETIC VISION OF THE PHILIPPINES:

1. PEARL OF THE ORIENT SEAS (Dr. Jose P. Rizal)
2. APOSTLES OF THE LAST DAYS (Dr. Sonia M. Zaide)
3. EAGLE OF THE ENDTIME HARVEST (Rev. Herbie Carmona)
4. THE BURNING BUSH OF ASIA (Bishop Dan Balais)
5. THE WARRIOR OF GOD IN THE FAR EAST (Rev. Bill Perry)
6. THE NEW COVENANT KINGDOM NATION (Pastor Isabelo MeraƱa)
7. THE FINANCIAL CENTER OF THE WORLD (Ex-Pres. Ronald Reagan)
8. THE LAST SPIRITUAL AND ECONOMIC SAVIOUR (Rev. Ramil Lunajo)
9. THE RIGHTEOUS PRIEST /REGION OF LIGHT (TGC-Bro Timothy Schwab)
10. THE GARDEN OF EDEN (Dr Richard Vincent Narag)
11. THE BEACON OF LIGHT TO THE WORLD (Prophet Sadhu Sundar Selvaraj)
12. THIS NATION WILL BE GREAT AGAIN (APO LAKAY)

What an interesting list. Does anyone believe Ronald Reagan called the Philippines "The Financial Center of the world?" What a total crock! Or is it? Let's find out.

1. PEARL OF THE ORIENT SEAS (Dr. Jose P. Rizal)

This so-called prophecy originates from the first stanza of Rizal's final poem Mi Ultimo Adios, My Last Farewell.

Farewell, my adored Land, region of the sun caressed,
Pearl of the Orient Sea, our Eden lost,
With gladness I give you my Life, sad and repressed;
And were it more brilliant, more fresh and at its best,
I would still give it to you for your welfare at most.

https://www.kapitbisig.com/philippines/poems-written-by-dr-jose-rizal-my-last-farewell-by-dr-jose-rizal-english-version-of-mi-ultimo-adios_87.html

This poem is not a prophecy at all. It is Rizal longing for his homeland written the night before he was executed. However, some read this as if Rizal thought the Philippines was the actual Biblical Garden of Eden. That is clearly not what is being said. Eden is a metaphor for paradise. He is calling his homeland paradise in an obviously metaphorical way.

2. APOSTLES OF THE LAST DAYS (Dr. Sonia M. Zaide)

"Apostles of the Last Days" is actually part of the title of a book written by Dr. Zaide. She believes that Filipinos have been strategically placed to spread the Gospel far and wide throughout Asia in these "last days."

The Philippines is the only Christian nation in Asia. But is that just a part of this nations history or part of a divine calling? Many Christian leaders say the Philippines is strategically located to take the light of the gospel to the populous Muslim and communist regions of Asia.

"I believe that the mantle of missions which was on America at the turn of the century, which was the result of the Great Awakening during the 19th century, is now upon the Philippines," said historian Dr. Sonia Zaide.

In her book, The Filipinos as Apostles for the Last Days, Dr. Zaide says the Philippines has been described as the "light of Asia," the "key to the 10/40 window" which makes up the least evangelized group of countries in the world.

She says missionaries have described visions of the Philippines as a "flaming sword" of the Holy Spirit touching nearby Asian countries, or as an erupting volcano spewing forth, not lava but men and women armed with Bibles going to the closed countries of Asia and the Middle East.

Christian leaders here in the Philippines say it is not a coincidence that they are the only Christian nation in Asia. In fact, many believe it is their divine calling, that they, not westerners, are the ones to take the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the closed countries of Asia.

Ray Corpus, head of the Philippines Missions Alliance, believes the Philippines must shine the light of Christ because, "Theres so much darkness in Asia."

The Philippines Missions Alliance oversees more than 100 missions agencies, and Corpus believes God is preparing to use the Philippines as a missionary launching pad to the rest of Asia.

Corpus believes the flexibility of Filipinos will enable them to spread the Gospel under many different conditions. "I believe the Philippines can play a major role because we are multi-lingual, we can sleep on the floor, sleep on the couch, we can stay in 5-star hotels," he said.

"I believe God is going to manifest His tremendous power through this nation, our economy is going to turn around because how else can God finance His own mission work in the Philippines if we're not going to be blessed," Corpus continued. "We're not going to ask money from America or other countries, God is going to bless us here so we can become a blessing."

So Corpus offers this challenge to believers, not just in the Philippines but worldwide: "God has never given the church such a tremendous time to expand our borders more than ever, and this is the time. And I believe, as the United States stages a war against terrorism, we are also staging a war against the heavenlies. And God's going to open doors of opportunities for Christians, and it takes believers who are serious to say, Yes Lord, I'm gonna be a witness! Yes Lord, I'm gonna be a light of the world."

Dr. Zaide says even the name "Philippines" is prophetic. The Philippines was named in honor of Crown Prince Philip of Asturia, who later became the greatest missionary king of Spain in the 16th century.

https://www2.cbn.com/article/christian-life/light-asia

That last paragraph is terribly ironic seeing as the people who post these kinds of "prophecies" about the Philippines think the name Philippines is a shameful way to hide the "real" name of these islands which they claim is  Ophir or Maharlika. Strangely enough this book is not available anywhere. There is not even a picture of the cover nor is it listed in Sonia Zaide's bibliography on Goodreads. The only proof this book exists is a listing in the National Library of the Philippines. At 20 pages it is basically a pamphlet and not a book. There is also no video of Zaide on the 700 Club. All we have is this article and it's hardly a prophecy. It is more like a report of prophecies about the Philippines. The bulk of it seems to have come from Bill Perry who is mentioned below.

3. EAGLE OF THE ENDTIME HARVEST (Rev. Herbie Carmona)

Herbie Carmona is the chairman of Church Planters League International Inc. I am unable to find the origin of this "prophecy."

4. THE BURNING BUSH OF ASIA (Bishop Dan Balais)

Bishop Dan Balais is the national chairman of Intercessors for the Philippines and Senior Pastor of Christ the Living Stone Fellowship.

It is not clear where this so-called prophecy originates. It might be Dan Balais lifted it from Rev. Bill Perry.

5. THE WARRIOR OF GOD IN THE FAR EAST (Rev. Bill Perry)

William Perry was an American evangelist who had a prophetic vision about the Philippines. He subsequently travelled to the Philippines and published his vision in a book titled "A Prophectic Vision For the Philippines."

In this book he describes the Philippines as both "a man in military armor" and a burning bush.

In this fast moving vision, the nation of the Philippines (Fig. 3) was not just the 7,000 islands that comprise the archipelago.  It appeared as a man in military armor (Fig. 3A), perhaps like what King David or the warriors of the Middle Ages had worn.  Northern Luzon was the helmet and plume of this man of war, Palawan was the sword in his hand.  The Visayas formed the chest and heart area and Mindanao was the lower part of the body with Zamboanga and Sulu forming the legs.  The problem was the military man was in total darkness.

Then something happened.  Flames started blazing up in various areas of the Philippines, in Manila, Baguio and other parts of Luzon:  Cebu, Iloilo, Bacolod and other parts of the Visayas: and Davao, Cagayan de Oro, Zamboanga City and other parts of Mindanao (Fig. 4).  Then it became the burning bush of Asia with the flames of God’s glory all over the islands (Fig. 5).

This book is available in full at the above link.

6. THE NEW COVENANT KINGDOM NATION (Pastor Isabelo MeraƱa)

Googling "Pastor Isabelo MeraƱa" brings up no hits. However, there is a Facebook profile for an Isabelo MeraƱa who runs a Facebook group called "Ophir Philippines As The New Covenant Kingdom Nation."

The About section for the group reads as follows:
This is a controversial claim of replacing ISRAEL in time by a New Covenant Spiritual Kingdom Nation, Philippines...TO PROVOKE THEM UNTO JEALOUSY with a prayer that could be resulted unto their salvation on these last days.
This is not a prophecy at all. It's a controversial statement to stir up people to think.

7. THE FINANCIAL CENTER OF THE WORLD (Ex-Pres. Ronald Reagan)

I am unable to find any proof that Ronald Reagan ever called the Philippines a current or future "financial center of the world. Using those search terms brings up this same prophetic list which has been published on several Facebook sites. There is also this picture:

8. THE LAST SPIRITUAL AND ECONOMIC SAVIOUR (Rev. Ramil Lunajo)

There is no information about Rev. Ramil Lunajo except for his being listed on the board of directors for Citigates Philippines International Ministries.

Searching for "THE LAST SPIRITUAL AND ECONOMIC SAVIOUR" only brings up the list of alleged prophecies at the beginning of the article.

9. THE RIGHTEOUS PRIEST /REGION OF LIGHT (TGC-Bro Timothy Schwab)

I have written at length about what Timothy Jay Schwab has to say about the Philippines. His prophetic vision is that Filipinos (righteous priests) shall rise up in the last days and condemn the New World Order. He also teaches that the Philippines is where light was created. Everything he writes about the Philippines and the Bible is a total lie and he is best ignored.

10. THE GARDEN OF EDEN (Dr Richard Vincent Narag)

"Garden of Eden is in Philippines" is the title of a book written by Dr. Richard Vincent Narag.

I haven't read it and I don't know what it says but it sounds like a history more than a prophetic vision.

11. THE BEACON OF LIGHT TO THE WORLD (Prophet Sadhu Sundar Selvaraj)

Sadhu Sundar delivered an alarming "prophecy" about the Philippines way back in 2013. He claimed all sorts of disasters would befall these islands.

God is going to pour out His anointings in 7 cities of this nation like never done before anywhere else in the world. You will be the first nation and the first people in the world to receive that kind of an anointing.

If you remember clearly… [another prophet] saw a huge menorah, and from the menorah the seven spirits of the Lord came forth, and the seven spirits of the Lord will be poured upon the Philippines, the first of its kind in the world. Because you receive like the firstfruits anointing, the punishment will also be the first of its kind in the world. Blessings first of its kind, and the punishment the first of its kind. So the plagues that will strike Pangasinan will be nothing that the world has ever seen. The skin, the flesh, and the bones will be corrupted. They melt and will rot away.

Next, Cebu. Another peculiar disease, a plague will arise from Cebu and will spread all over the land and then spread all over the world. And Bohol. From Bohol another plague another disease will arise and spread all over the land and all over the world.

So the first is the destruction through winds. The second is the destruction through diseases. The third destruction through floods. You have experienced many floods in the history of your nation, but that which is to come has no precedent in the past… Specifically, the areas that will experience this flooding: Luzon, Samar, Leyte, and Cebu.

And some hundreds of places, small places, will experience flooding. These are destructions that will come upon your land….

As I am speaking these words, I perceive very strongly in my spirit… take this word seriously. Take your call seriously, for there has not been another nation like your nation that has received such a call as you have received. There has not been another nation like your nation where even the churches of God, the army of God, will come and be stationed in this land. The armies will be stationed in this land, and they will wage war against the enemies of God. The kingdom of God, the angels of God, the saints of God—forget about the Catholic teaching of praying to the saints; I’m not talking about that now; I’m talking about the true ministry of angels and the true ministry of saints–They will come down [to assist the army of God]….

What a great and awesome privilege you have received from the Almighty God. But at the same time, if you will fail in your calling, great will be your judgment….

Fleshing eating diseases? Viruses that will spread from the Philippines around the world? It's all bunk. I cannot find where he called the Philippines "The Beacon Light to the World" but it does not matter because based on these prophecies alone the man is a liar.

12. THIS NATION WILL BE GREAT AGAIN (APO LAKAY)

Apo Lakay is President Ferdinand Marcos. In his inaugural speech he said:

This nation can be great again. This I have said over and over. It is my article of faith, and Divine Providence has willed that you and I can now translate this faith into deeds.

https://www.officialgazette.gov.ph/1965/12/30/inaugural-address-of-president-marcos-december-30-1965/

And then he proceeded to rob the nation blind.

What are we to make of all these so-called prophetic visions? At best they are hopeful delusions and at worst (especially with Timothy Jay Schwab) it's a long con and willful deception. There is really only one prophetic vision here and that is the one given by Bill Perry. Several of these prophecies appear to be derived from his book. It is a unique and detailed vision very much worth reviewing in detail. I will be doing that the next time I cover this topic.

Insurgency: Tight Poll Watch

Last week the AFP declared all NPA fronts to be insurgent free. Obviously that is not the case as the AFP continues to engage in firefights with the NPA. Out of 13 rebels neutralized in the Central Visayas in September 16 were killed while the rest surrendered.

https://mb.com.ph/2023/10/3/army-neutralizes-30-npa-rebels-in-western-central-visayas

The 3rd Infantry Division (ID) of the Philippine Army neutralized 30 New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in Western and Central Visayas in September.

The 3rd ID said 16 NPA rebels were killed while others surrendered from September 1 to September 30.

Among the communist fighters killed was Rebecca Alfaro, alias “Jing,” who was among three casualties in a September 29 encounter with the 61st Infantry Battalion (IB) in Leon town, Iloilo province. Alfaro was the secretary of the NPA Southern Front Committee in Panay Island.
Others were killed in clashes in Negros Island which is under the area of coverage of 3rd ID units.
Among the 12 NPA rebels who surrendered last month through the efforts of the 79th IB was a former secretary of the NPA Northern Negros Front.
The 3rd ID also seized 33 firearms – 15 high-powered and 18 low-powered – and five explosives.
The 3rd ID attributed the neutralization of the NPA rebels to the strong support of locals who provided ground information.
“Our persistent victory in crushing the NPA is a result of the unwavering support and cooperation from the local populace. They have become increasingly vigilant, providing us with timely and accurate information about the movement and activities of the NPA,” said Major Gen. Marion Sison, 3rd ID commander.

Down south in Western Mindanao the AFP says the influx of NPA surrendering continues.

Westmincom Facebook

Three more communist terrorist group remnants yielded to the military in Sultan Kudarat on September 24, 2023.

The surrendered personalities handed over two 5.56mm Colt M16 rifles and one Cal .38 revolver to the armed forces at the headquarters of the 37th Infantry Battalion in Barangay Tibpuan, Lebak, Sultan Kudarat.

Based on the initial revelation of the former rebels, they decided to surrender because of the hardships and pressure brought about by the continuous conduct of military operations against them and the lack of morale and financial support from the leadership of the Far South Mindanao Region (FSMR), the group that they former belong.

Maj. Gen. Alex Rillera, Commander of Joint Task Force Central, said that the surrender of CTG remnants is an indication of the continuous downfall of the group. It is brought about by the relentless efforts of the military to conduct decisive military operations against the armed components of the FSMR and the effective CSP operations in the sitios that are considered to be the mass base of the CTGs.

Surrendered personalities underwent custodial debriefing while their documents were processed for enrollment in the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-CLIP).

Maj. Gen. Steve Crespillo, Commander of Western Mindanao Command, commended the Joint Task Force Central for the influx of CTG surrenders in Central Mindanao.

The snowball of surrenders exemplifies the continuous dwindling of the group. Through our convergence, we are able to transform Mindanao into a better place to live in,” Maj. Gen. Crespillo added.

Funny how three is an "influx" and a "snowball of surrenders." It's a rather piecemeal operation. In Davao Norte, a region declared insurgency free, three NPA fighters surrendered because they were tired and hungry.

https://www.pna.gov.ph/articles/1210987

Saying they are exhausted and hungry, three New People’s Army (NPA) rebels surrendered to the military’s 56th Infantry Battalion (56IB) and handed over two high-powered firearms in the Davao Del Norte town of Talaingod, an official said Tuesday.

Major Mark Anthony Tito, the Army’s 10th Infantry Division spokesperson, identified the surrenderers only as “Sander”, vice-squad leader of the NPA Sub-Regional Sentro De Grabibad (SRSDG) Peddler, North Central Mindanao Regional Committee (NCMRC), and the two others as “Alvin” and “Toks”.

Tito said the trio, who yielded on Sept. 30 to the 56IB in Barangay Palma Gil, once operated along the border areas of Talaingod and Bukidnon province.

“They confessed that they are very tired, and they are pressured of the military operations conducted by our troops. Also, they said they are starving,” Tito said in an interview.

The three also surrendered two M16 rifles and one rifle grenade ammunition as a testament to their commitment to peace and reconciliation.

Meanwhile, Brig. Gen. Allan Hambala, the 10ID acting commander, underscored the importance of NPA fighters voluntarily laying down arms, describing it as an "essential milestone in the region's ongoing efforts to sustain an Insurgency-free Davao Region."

Do not forget that Davao Norte was delacred insurgency free last year. That means NO INSURGENTS. But we see three insurgents have surrendered and the 10ID acting commander says "NPA fighters voluntarily laying down arms" is an "essential milestone in the region's ongoing efforts to sustain an Insurgency-free Davao Region."

How ridiculous! With this admission it is clear that the region was never and is not now insurgent free.

The NPA fronts are so not insurgent free that three villages in Negros Occidental are being watched for interference during the upcoming election.

https://www.pna.gov.ph/articles/1211163

Three villages in Negros Occidental identified as areas of grave concern due to the monitored presence of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army (CPP-NPA) will be tightly secured for the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections (BSKE) on Oct. 30.

These include Barangay Minapasuk of Calatrava town in the north and Barangays Quintin Remo and Macagahay of Moises Padilla town in central Negros.

Col. Leo Pamittan, provincial director of Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office (NOCPPO), said the three villages are part of the updated election areas of concern validated by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) and the Philippine Army (PA).

“These barangays have the presence of (a) communist-terrorist group. That is the reason why. Nonetheless, we have nothing to worry about since we have this (under) control. We hope we will not reach the point that they will be placed under the Comelec control. As of now, it is manageable,” he told reporters on the sidelines of the Provincial Joint Security Control Center (PJSCC) meeting at the Negros Residences on Wednesday.

Pamittan said while there is insurgency concern, they have not monitored intense political rivalry in the three villages.

He added that both the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) will make those in the “red” category or areas of grave concern a priority for the deployment of security personnel, especially the quick reaction forces.

With these statements how can anyone believe the fiction that the NPA fronts are all insurgent free? It makes no sense. Clearly it's just propaganda and outright lies from the AFP.

While it is a fact that these fronts are not insurgent free Marcos says it is achievable, at least for the Visayas, to reach that status.

https://mb.com.ph/2023/10/6/insurgency-free-western-visayas-is-achievable-marcos-says

Considering the decreasing trend of communist terrorist groups in Western Visayas, President Marcos believes that declaring  the region as insurgency-free is achievable.

Marcos expressed this during a situation briefing with the Philippine Army in Camp General Macario Peralta Jr. in Jamindan, Capiz on Friday, Oct. 6.

He expressed optimism that clearing the region from insurgency is achievable, citing the decreasing trend of communist terrorist groups (CTGs) force shown since 2019.

“We must keep on going and we’ll wait for your invitation to come back when you declare this area insurgent-free… I think it’s achievable,” he said.

The President told the Philippine Army that they need to ensure that these groups will no longer have the platform to finance its operations. He also commended them for sustaining peace efforts in the region.

“I would (like to) congratulate you for the good progress that you’re making. Keep the pressure going…I know that the other units are also doing it in terms of the financing. But perhaps, you could put more emphasis on that,” he said.

Marcos says keep going and invite me back when the region is actually insurgent free. It's too funny and a deep cut to the pride of the AFP.

In Albay an NPA leader was killed during an encounter with the PNP.

The Police Regional Office-5 (PRO5)-Bicol on Wednesday identified the two New People's Army (NPA) rebels killed in an encounter with police operatives in Barangay Bascaran, Daraga, Albay on Tuesday.

In a report, Lt. Col Malu Calubaquib, PRO5 spokesperson, identified the suspects as Rizaldy Perdigon, a high-ranking leader of the NPA and head of Rebolusyonaryong Buwis sa Kaaway na Uri-Albay, and Allan Balde Leron, a member of Platoon 3, Sub-Regional Committee 3, Bicol Regional Party Committee, who had a pending case for violation of Republic Act 11479, the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020.

"These two deliberately fired shots at the personnel on duty at Bascaran Police Assistance Center (BPAC), endangering the safety and welfare of the public. Fortunately, no government personnel or members of the public sustained injuries, as the police force responded swiftly and effectively countered their actions," Calubaquib said.

She said Perdigon faced multiple pending charges, including three counts of attempted murder, 13 counts of attempted homicide, four counts of murder and destructive arson, and was linked to heinous crimes, including targeted killings, ambushes of both police officers and civilians and extortion activities targeting the public and local businesses.

"Leron, during their attacks at Bascaran Police Assistance Center, was responsible for driving the motorcycle used in the assaults," Calubaquib said.

How many more high-ranking NPA leaders are out there?

Meanwhile in Basilan 14 Abu Sayyaf supporters have surrendered.

Fourteen Abu Sayyaf Group combatants and their supporters have surrendered to the Army's 101st Infantry Brigade (Bde) in Isabela City, Basilan province, an official said Thursday.

Brig. Gen. Alvin Luzon, 101Bde commander, said the surrender Wednesday was made possible through the joint efforts of various military field units in the province.

In a statement, Luzon said the group handed over two M14 rifles, five M16 rifles, an M653 rifle, two M79 grenade launchers, two Garand rifles, and a 9mm Intratec TEC-KG9 assault rifle during the surrender rites.

Luzon also credited the support of the Basilan provincial police office and the local government units of Sumisip, Hadji Mohammad Ajul, Tipo-Tipo, and Lantawan for the achievement.

Western Mindanao Command chief, Maj. Gen. Steve Crespillo, commended the former combatants for making the right decision.

“Rest assured that we will help them to start anew through the reintegration programs of the government," he said.

Ah, yes. Rest assure these 14 people who supported terrorism will never see a day in jail but will benefit from programs paid by taxpayers. Isn't that special?

I Stopped A Truck From Illegally Dumping Garbage

While out for a run one recent afternoon I saw a truck filled with garbage pull up next to a local illegal dumpsite. It was very obvious what was about to happen so I whipped out my camera and fired up the video.

After some hesitation he drove off.

About a mile up the street are two large trash bins which he must have known about since that is where the driver left his garbage.

Why do people do this? The garbage truck comes around twice a week. They will even take leaves which deprives those who illegally burn their yard waste of no excuse. Certainly they would take those bags and styrofoam bars.

I am certain the driver knew about these two bins because he did not offload his garbage at the other illegal dumpsite which is just up the street. Of course I could be wrong. But the question remains. Why do these people illegally dump their garbage? And in the middle of the day no less!
