A few months ago the sari-sari store/house at the entrance to my neighbourhood was suddenly abandoned. Practically overnight. They whisked away their possessions, stripped the building, and took all the fighting cocks.
There must have been about 5 or 6 dogs left behind. People living near this abandoned place feed the dogs scraps and once a lady who rescues strays came to feed them after she was notified of the situation.
Naturally the dogs were a little skittish and had to be coaxed into accepting food from this stranger. Frankly I don't even know why she came as she only fed them once never to return. The dogs were left in the collective care of everyone residing near the dogs abandoned home.
Six months later the dogs are mostly dead. At least I don't see them around anymore. But I also have not seen any corpses. I highly doubt the owners returned to fetch their dogs.
So that's more of what it is to be a dog in the Philippines. Abandoned at the drop of a hat and worth less than a fighting cock.
