Eight police officers in the Davao region have tested positive for illegal drug use, the Police Regional Office 11 (PRO-11) confirmed Thursday.
Maj. Catherine Dela Rey, PRO-11 spokesperson, said seven officers tested positive in random drug tests conducted on separate dates, while another tested positive after being arrested in a buy-bust operation.
“I cannot provide specifics about their areas of assignment, but they are from the provincial police offices and the Davao City Police Office,” Dela Rey said.
The officers have been relieved of their posts and disarmed, with pre-charge investigations underway, she added.
Dela Rey reaffirmed PRO-11 Director Brig. Gen. Leon Victor Rosete's firm stand against illegal drugs, stressing the importance of strict internal discipline within the regional police force.

MORE than 1,800 senior citizens in Dalaguete, southern Cebu, have filed a complaint against Mayor Roland Allan Cesante and another municipal official for allegedly excluding them from cash assistance early this year.
The complainants, led by Valeriano Velarde and Marcelo Entera, accused Cesante and Municipal Social Welfare Development Officer Jona Villahermosa of grave misconduct, abuse of authority and discrimination in the distribution of government cash assistance.
Complaints for violations of Republic Act (RA) 7432, the Senior Citizens Act, and RA 6713, the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees, were filed before the Office of the Ombudsman-Visayas on Thursday, Nov. 28, 2024.
Complainants, aged 60 to 66, said they were unjustly excluded from receiving their cash assistance under a policy allegedly imposed by Cesante.
Cesante reportedly implemented an age cutoff, granting benefits only to senior citizens aged 67 and above.
“Some senior citizens were given assistance, but it seems like they were chosen selectively, as if there was favoritism,” Entera said in Cebuano.
“We trusted our officials to protect our rights, not to trample on them,” he added.
The complainants also raised concerns about the fate of funds allocated for the excluded age group. They accused Cesante of acting without justifiable cause, calling the policy discriminatory and unlawful.
The complaint further alleges that Cesante and Villahermosa violated RA 6713 by failing to uphold fairness and ethical standards in their duties.
Joey Borinaga, the legal counsel for the complainants, said the complaint aims to hold the officials accountable and ensure that proper benefits are extended to all senior citizens in the municipality, which has over 7,000 registered seniors.
As of press time, Cesante and Villahermosa have not issued any official statements regarding the allegations.
