In the neighbourhood I live there is a guy who delivers soda. His big trucks are always parked out front of his house constantly being tuned up and repaired. For some odd reason soda he does not deliver and which ends up expiring he dumps in a little area on his property. This little dumpster is pretty disgusting and smelly. Bottles of soda, bags of chips, cardboard, regular garbage too...it all stinks and I can't imagine why his landfill is tolerated by the community. Just look at it.
What a dump. Literally. But this dump is a little slice of heaven for a group of children who periodically raid this cache of expired soda. These Little Rascals do not live in this neighbourhood. They literally have to cross a river to get here just like trolls or goblins raiding an elf village.
Just like goblins they hastily consume their booty and leave the refuse behind.
When you see empty bottles all over the place you know a raid has just happened. When you see strange children begin to roam the neighbrohood you know a raid is coming. It's not easy to predict when a raid will occur. You just have to read the signs and wait. You have to feel it in your bones. And if you are lucky you can catch these Little Rascals in the act.
When these children saw me approach they scattered like ants and ran like the wind back towards the woods and across the river clutching as much treasure as their tiny arms could hold. One of them was so scared he had to run back for his dog he left behind. But they will be back. And so will the dog.
Come on man, I'm sure you're smarter than this. Why don't you rinse these bottles of soda with water and offer them to these kids instead of playing games?
ReplyDeleteThey are not my bottles. I can't do anything with them. I'm sure those kids enjoy the expired soda more than they would water.
DeleteScott,
DeleteHere's an idea. Why not hold the parents and the pinoy dumping the trash accountable? CXome on man, I'm sure your smarter than that. Jusy send Philippinefails a private email and ask him where this place is. I'm sure he will tell you then you can go there, rinse out bottles and give to the kids instead of playing the "I'm holier than you" game.
Scott, while you're there you could also clean up the trash.
DeleteMy bad Phillippinefails. I thought you live there because some of these pictures have been taken from inside the lot. Anyways, rinsed or not these kids will take them anyways. I don't really blame the kids for this. It's the driver. He's dumb and irresponsible. I know it's not a reason but many people in this country struggle a lot! Many are totally desperate. There's this young man from Finland who got the idea of offering free food (rice) to the poor. Not an easy task in the Philippines knowing how disciplined people are! Here: The Dark Side of Philippines (Extreme Poverty)

Free food = carnage. They fix a problem but create different ones. like chaos, noise littering etc. After double thinking I'm not too sure my idea of offering free food to poor kids was good. They might come back with others including adults. Not easy to help people in this country.
Scott,
DeleteTwo mottoes that would suit the Philippines and Filipinos perfect:
1.) "We celebrate failure."
2.) "No good deed goes unpunished."
Hello Michael. Do you mean that people who try to help Filipinos end up being punished for their actions? Can you give me few examples?
Deletescott,
DeleteThat's exactly what I mean. If you help them then they tend to expect it all the time. Try this. When a Filipinos ask you for a loan of P100 wait and see how long it is before he ask for another loan and usually bigger. Few years back a woman had a business up in Manila and went home to the prov where family asked her to give this other pinay a job in Manila. The woman gives her a job, pays for her plane ticket and off they go. What happens in Manila? The pinay wanting the job had the other woman arrested for illegal recruitment. My wife runs a few businesses so hires a lot of Filipinos. They come to her asking for a job so she background checks them. With very few exceptions they have all stolen us blind, clothes, glasses, silverware, tools and the list goes on.
Or closer to home. We took in a Westerner who found out his wife had several boyfriends and drained his account of over $100,000. So what does his wife do? Tries to burn down our house. Filipinos are very vindictive. Did you know it is against Philippine law to give a Filipino used clothing even if barely worn?
It might not be punishment by law but Filipinos will screw you over after you help them if they see the chance.
