Philippine National Police (PNP) operatives arrested a town official in La Union province for possession of illegal firearms during a search warrant operation on Saturday.
PNP chief Gen. Debold M. Sinas identified the suspect as Michael Mapalo, a councilor and resident of Tubao town.
Mapalo was arrested in his home during the implementation of search warrant for Violation of Republic Act 10591 (Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act) issued by Judge Romeo M. Atillo, Presiding Judge of Regional Trial Court-Branch 31 in Agoo, La Union.
Operatives seized assorted pieces of evidence during the operation including one .45 caliber pistol, one magazine assembly for .45 caliber pistol loaded with four live ammunitions, one 5.56mm M-16 Baby Armalite Rifle Elisco with serial number, and one magazine assembly for M-16 loaded with nine live rounds of ammunition.
"When the authorities asked for corresponding documents for the firearms, Manalo could not provide the said documents," Sinas said in a statement.
Another local official busted for illegal firearms.

A councilor of Mabuhay town in Zamboanga Sibugay was killed and his driver wounded in a gun attack on Monday, April 5, in the town center.
A report from the Mabuhay police office said councilor Alvarez Dammang, 45, was on his way to Talusan town aboard a vehicle driven by Alamsa Sabturani, 35, when two unidentified motorcycle-riding gunmen accosted them in Poblacion and opened fire.
Dammang comes from a political family. His brother used to be the town’s vice mayor.
Last February, a lone gunman killed the town’s vice mayor, Restituto Calonge, and a companion outside the municipal hall.
Another local politician gunned down. Sounds like it might be politically motivated as he came from a political family and there is a history of political violence in his town.

The national police disclosed Wednesday that it relieved and reassigned Police Lt. Col. Marlo Solero, the chief of police of General Trias City in Cavite, and two other cops after determining that they did indeed force quarantine violators to do exercises as a punishment, which led to the death of one 28-year-old.
First reported by Rappler, Darren Manaog was on his way to get water after curfew hours when he was apprehended and made to do 300 rounds of a pumping exercise, according to an account by his cousin posted to Facebook. He passed away from a stroke days later.
The relief of the three cops was confirmed in a text message to reporters by Police Brig. Gen. Ildebrandi Usana, spokesperson for the Philippine National Police. It should be noted, however, that relief from a position is not the same as dismissal from service.
"He'll be in the provincial office based in Imus for now," Usana told Philstar.com in Filipino in a phone call. "The two cops are now placed under the direct supervision and control of the provincial director."
According to Usana, the decision came after Police Col. Marlon Santos, Cavite provincial director, "went straight to General Trias to validate for himself from vital witnesses what actually happened."
The punishment for these cops who forced quarantine violators to do exercises which resulted in the death of a man is merely reassignment. Who knows but that at their new posts they will cause someone else's death?

The Department of the Interior Local Government (DILG) on Thursday warned local officials that they can be penalized and removed from post if found manipulating the social amelioration program (SAP).
According to Undersecretary for Barangay Affairs Martin Diño, in an interview with ABS-CBN’s Teleradyo, DILG is actively searching for officials involved in SAP irregularities.
(Every day we have people being suspended and fired, and every day we file a case. Today I have 500 pending cases against barangay officials.)
This is aside from the 89 barangay officials who were suspended last year over SAP irregularities.
Diño said that his office receives complaints daily about barangay officials prioritizing their families and allies in getting SAP assistance, even when they are not qualified in the list of recipients.
every day the DILG field a case against an official for SAP anomalies. Every. Day. That's how corrupt LGUs can be.
