A grenade explosion ripped through a stretch of a highway here Friday night, barely four hours after the fatal ambush of a policeman in the same area.

Patrolman Mangued Mangabpel Salumandeg was riding a motorcycle en route to the Tantangan municipal station when he was attacked by gunmen while motoring through a stretch of the Koronadal-Tacurong Highway in Barangay Dumadalig here.

Salumandeg, assigned at the Police Regional Office-12 in General Santos City, died on the spot from gunshot wounds.

His attackers escaped using motorcycles driven by cohorts.

The incident preceded the grenade blast Friday night in Barangay Dumadalig, not too far away from the spot where Salumandeg was killed.

The local police said one of two men on a motorcycle together hurled a grenade at a red Mitsubushi pick-up truck parked along a portion of the Koronadal-Tacurong Highway in Barangay Dumadalig and sped away as the explosive went off.

Investigators from the Tantangan municipal police office are still clueless on the bombing incident.

They are not sure either if it could be related to the fatal ambush of a Salumandeg about four hours prior at the same route.

A policeman was ambushed on his way to work and four hours later someone tossed a grenade at a truck.

The Supreme Court affirmed the 2019 ruling of the Sandiganbayan that found a former regional director of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) liable for grave threats on a subordinate eight years ago.

The SC First Division upheld the guilty verdict on Juvenal Azurin and sentenced him to two months and one day in prison, according to a 12-page decision written by Associate Justice Alfredo Caguioa and published online December 10.

A fellow PDEA employee, Jaime Clave, accused Azurin of berating him and threatening his life through a phone call on Nov. 15, 2013.

Three years after the incident, Clave said he regretted filing the case and submitted an affidavit of desistance and a motion to dismiss to the Sandiganbayan.

The SC, however, ruled that the felony of grave threat “is consummated as soon as the threats come to the knowledge of the person threatened”.

Azurin. director of the Regional Office No. 2 in Tuguegarao City, Cagayan at the time, accused Clave of sending text messages to PDEA higher-ups about the goings-on in the regional office and issues pertaining to operational funds.

Clave, an agent since 2007, stated in his administrative complaint before the Internal Affairs Services Office that he feared for his life when Azurin made the call.

Philippine National Police (PNP) chief, Gen. Dionardo Carlos, on Monday ordered an immediate probe into the police officer who was accused of raping a teenager in Laguna.

In a statement, Carlos said the suspect identified as Pat. John Mari Lontok is now under police custody after he surrendered to the arresting team at around 2 p.m. on Sunday at his residence in Sta. Maria, Laguna.

“This is a very unfortunate report. We will make sure that this will be a fair and speedy investigation,” Carlos said in a statement.

The 18-year-old victim and her family personally appeared at the Sta. Maria Municipal Police Station to report an alleged rape that transpired on Sunday morning.

Allegedly, the suspect arrived at the victim's house and joined them in their drinking session.

However, the victim felt drowsy and decided to sleep. Upon waking up to her senses, she was shocked when she noticed that her pants and underwear were already removed and the suspect was already making physical advances.

The teenager tried to push him away and sought help but the suspect allegedly threatened to kill her.

Thereafter, the suspect immediately fled while his bag containing his issued firearm with magazines was left under the bed of the victim.
