Coronavirus Lockdown: A Long, Enduring Battle, Population Reduction, and More!

More news about how the COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines is being handled by the public and the government.

Christmas caroling has been banned not only by LGUs but now by the Church.

https://www.pna.gov.ph/articles/1122223

This holiday season, Christmas carol activities for parishes is prohibited due to the pandemic, Catholic Church officials in Manila said.

Manila Apostolic Administrator Bishop Broderick Pabillo said churches in the archdiocese have been told not to organize such activity.

“We have already instructed our parishes not to organize carolings,” he said in a statement.

The Manila auxiliary bishop added that there was no formal order regarding the non-holding of Christmas caroling but they were informed during a meeting earlier this month.

“There’s no letter. I just told them in our zoom meeting,” he said.

The move is to curb the spread of coronavirus disease, according to the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines-Permanent Committee on Public Affairs (CBCP-PCPA) executive secretary Fr. Jerome Secillano.

He said doing so would protect the public and the choir members since according to experts, the virus can easily transmit through singing.

Like all things COVID-19 the spread of the virus through singing is not a settled science.

But let's cancel Christmas actives for fear of spreading a virus with an over 90% recovery rate. The IATF has officially banned Christmas caroling this year.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought out the steak disparities across the country as far as internet access goes.

In this health crisis where almost everyone needs an online connection, residents in this town’s farming village have found bamboo poles as a technology ally useful to access social media.

Bamboos, measuring about 10 meters erected next to houses, are a common sight in Tenani village, which is 15 km. away from the town center of Paranas.

At the tip of the bamboo pole, a plastic bottle is installed covering a WiFi modem.

“That's for us to access Messenger and Facebook,” Sherly Villamor, a mother of five and a long-time village resident, said on Wednesday.

Due to its location, poor mobile phone signal is a common concern among villagers.

“We have mobile phones here, but you can't call or message us. The best way to contact us is through Facebook and Messenger,” Villamor said in an interview.

The residents learned about the makeshift signal booster last March when movement restrictions deprived them of face-to-face communication with those outside their village.

“One of our neighbors tried this very simple 'technology' – WiFi modem on top of a tall bamboo pole. It is covered by an empty bottled water container to keep it dry during rainy days,” she added.

These bamboos, however, don’t guarantee round-the-clock social media access since they can only send and receive Facebook messages late at night and make video calls past midnight.

“I bought the modem for my children to do online research, but the problem is we only have signal during night time. The messaging app is still beneficial since they can ask for clarification from their teachers and classmates at night,” Villamor said.

WIFI modems on top of a bamboo pole are big technology to this remote village. Funny that it's only Facebook which keeps them connected to the outside world. The catch is the internet only works late at night after midnight!

A vaccine is apparently right around the corner which is why Duterte has changed his stance about paying in advance.

https://www.pna.gov.ph/articles/1122311

President Rodrigo Duterte has approved the recommendation to make advance payments to suppliers of potential vaccines for coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), MalacaƱang said Thursday.

Papasok po tayo ng advance market commitments kasama ng private vaccine developers at pagbigay ng advance payments sa kanila (We will enter into advanced market commitments with private vaccine developers and will give advanced payments to them),” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in a Palace press briefing.

Roque said Duterte agreed to enter into advance market commitments (AMCs) to avoid being among the last countries to acquire a vaccine. The President was initially against having to pay pharmaceutical companies to reserve vaccines in advance.

“So medyo pumayag na po tayo na magkakaroon tayo ng advanced kasi pag hindi po tayo pumayag baka mangulelat tayo dun sa mga bansa na makakakuha ng vaccine (We agreed to pay in advance because if we don’t, we might be the last among countries to get the vaccine),” he said.

He said Duterte changed his mind about making advanced payments after seeing a list of countries that have already made AMCs.

Duterte does not want to be last. But will there be enough money?  And what about proper cold storage facilities?

Don't think a vaccine will solve anything. The pandemic will continue even with one.

https://news.abs-cbn.com/news/11/20/20/pandemic-still-a-long-enduring-battle-even-after-vaccines-arrive-says-official

The Philippines will continue waging "a long and enduring battle" with the coronavirus pandemic even after a vaccine arrives, an official said Friday, some 8 months into varying degrees of lockdown meant to curb the crisis.

The Philippines, which has the second highest number of coronavirus cases and deaths in Southeast Asia, plans to procure an initial 50 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine. With 2 doses required per person, this means that only a quarter of the 108 million population will get inoculated next year.

Vaccination drives for COVID-19 will continue until 2022, said Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong, who heads efforts to trace those who had contact with coronavirus patients.

"This will still be a long and enduring battle. Looking at the latest development sa vaccine, I don't think we'll be able to immunize everyone dito sa Pilipinas (here in the Philippines) by 2021," he said in a public briefing.

Allegedly it will be a long battle because the government will not be able to immunize everyone. What that battle looks like remains to be seen. Face masks and face shields for years? How will the Philippines figure in the Great Reset? Never forget we were told there is no returning to "normal."

Life goes on even in the pandemic.

https://www.pna.gov.ph/articles/1122409
Forty-nine couples exchanged “I do’s” during a “face-mask wedding” ceremony in Tulunan, North Cotabato, as the town celebrates its 59th founding anniversary Thursday.

Tulunan Mayor Pip Limbungan, who administered the mass wedding around noon at the town gymnasium, said the event has become one of the highlights of the town's annual festivities.

The eldest among the brides was a 52-year-old woman with a disability who married a 44-year-old farmer.

They have been living as husband and wife for the past 10 years without a civil or church wedding, officials said.

“Minimum health protocols were properly observed, that is why it was called face mask wedding,” Limbungan said.
If they can perform mass weddings with face masks then why not caroling with face masks?

The FDA is looking to approve home testing kits for COVID-19.

https://www.philstar.com/headlines/2020/11/20/2058177/fda-eyes-use-home-test-kit-covid-19

The test kit for coronavirus disease 2019 that can be used at home may soon be available in the country, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said yesterday.

FDA director general Eric Domingo said the agency could easily process and approve the use of a self-testing kit for COVID-19 when its manufacturer applies for the required registration.

The first self-test kit for COVID is available in the US.

How does this even work? Who can poke a cotton swab through their nose to the back of their throat? The thought curls my toes.

The PNP says crime is down during the pandemic but the AMLC says financial crime is up.

https://www.gmanetwork.com/news/money/economy/764944/number-of-suspicious-transactions-reported-surged-amid-covid-19-pandemic-amlc/story/

As many were compelled to use digital payments during the strict lockdowns implemented in the first half of the year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a dramatic increase in reports of suspicious transactions was seen in the first eight months of the year.

In a virtual press briefing, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Governor Benjamin Diokno said the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) noted a surge in suspicious transaction reports (STRs) related to online activities in its “COVID-19 Financial Crime Trend Analysis and Typologies Brief, Series 2.”

Diokno, who as BSP governor also chairs the AMLC, said the report examines STRs submitted to AMLC from January 1 to August 31, 2020, which covered the months of the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ), modified ECQ, and general community quarantine.

“STR submissions for the period increased by 57% compared with the same months in 2019,” he said.

So crime in the real world is down according to the PNP but in the virtual world it is up according to the BSP.

Apparently Senator Lacson and Congressman Romuladez were given a COVID-19 vaccine.

https://www.gmanetwork.com/news/news/nation/765089/lacson-romualdez-were-vaccinated-for-covid-19-sen-sotto/story/

Senate President Vicente Sotto III on Saturday said that a senator and a congressman had been injected with a coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine and that they were immune to the illness.

According to Sotto, Senator Panfilo Lacson and House Majority Leader Martin Romualdez had been inoculated with a vaccine "seems to be similar to Pfizer," which only recently concluded its late-stage trials .

“Senator Lacson, the courage. It was immunized, it was injected. He is ahead, he and Martin Romualdez… seem to be the same as Pfizer, ”Sotto said in a radio interview.

Sotto said that others have already taken the vaccine. However, he did not specify if these were only Lacson and Romualdez or also other individuals.

“There are already but the others are brave enough to lead. Senator Lacson and I are joking, he said partner you are still immunized. I said wait, I'll see you first 'This Christmas, you still know me. Maybe later one day tell me, who are you? ” he said.

Sotto said that the 72-year-old Lacson told him he felt as if he was 30 years old after taking the vaccine.

This is a rare bizarre story and it's not clear if it's true as Lacson laughed it off when asked about it. But he also did not deny it either.

The BSP says the worst is over as far as the economy goes but hundreds of thousands of OFW's, who prop up the economy via remittances, have lost their jobs.

https://www.philstar.com/headlines/2020/11/22/2058686/covid-19-pandemic-sends-nearly-320000-ofws-back-home

The coronavirus pandemic has pushed nearly 320,000 overseas Filipino workers to return to the country, data from the labor department showed.

Government made its first repatriation efforts related to COVID-19 in February, when it brought back to the Philippines the OFWs from Wuhan City in China, where the virus first emerged late last year.

The numbers have grown since then, with some 38,516 returning to the country in November alone, according to the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, and bringing the total to 319,333.

OWWA has reported that the repatriated OFWs were transported to their provinces after being tested and cleared for the coronavirus.

A labor official in early September had put an estimate of as many as 700,000 Filipino workers abroad that could lose their jobs, as many countries enter a recession as a result of the ongoing health crisis.

Assistant Secretary Dominique Rubia-Tutay said overseas employment prospects in the tourism, retail and personal services industry will likely continue to shrink as the pandemic goes on.

700,000 unemployed OFW's would be a huge loss to the economy.

Who knew that family planning was essential to fighting the pandemic?

https://www.philstar.com/headlines/2020/11/23/2058798/family-planning-eyed-disaster-pandemic-response

Pandemic and disaster preparedness programs must include family planning to build up the resiliency of families and communities against calamities, the Commission on Population (PopCom) said over the weekend.

Ahead of today’s start of “Population and Development Week,” PopCom executive director Juan Antonio Perez III pushed for the inclusion of family planning in the drafting of programs related to pandemic and disaster response.

“Practicing family planning and  responsible parenthood should be part of medium- to long-term solutions toward building the resiliency of families and communities, as these would enable couples to have greater capacity to ensure their health, financial stability, and other social protections in the future,” Perez said.

When families are planned, vulnerabilities diminish and communities can overcome pandemic and natural calamities, he said.

This week, PopCom will highlight the interconnection of population factors and the pandemic.

“Our resiliency against the pandemic and other related crisis situations starts from our decision to form a family. We need to consider our preparedness and capabilities to provide each member their physical, social, emotional, and other pertinent needs,” Perez said.

As observed from trends and patterns of COVID-19 infections in the country, PopCom said community transmissions are still pervasive in cities with close congregations of people.

“Physical distancing — a critical health and safety protocol being implemented by the government — has proven to be difficult to implement among households of small residential units with an average of less than 20 sq. m., and having more than four members,” PopCom said.

Basically less people means less sick people during a pandemic.  A very slick way to encourage population reduction.

Shoppers crowded the streets of Divisoria in Manila and Baclaran in ParaƱaque over the weekend to beat the Christmas rush. Social distancing rules were ignored. The DOH's statement about the matter was rather interesting.

Wearing a face mask and face shield will not be enough to protect a person from COVID-19 in a crowded place, the Department of Health said Monday.

Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire issued the reminder in response to crowding of people in Divisoria, Manila and in Baclaran in Pasay City in light of people doing Christmas shopping.

“We saw your photos last weekend, how crowded. We want to remind our countrymen, the [COVID-19] virus is still there. The virus is transmitted when you are in a really crowded place, ”Vergeire said in an online briefing.

"Even if you are wearing a mask and face shield but you are going to a crowded place that you are almost close to, you can still be infected," Vergeire added.

Vergeire said the Inter Agency Task Force, which is the policy-making body of the government on COVID-19 response, is not allowing mass gathering precisely because of the huge risk of community transmission in such a setting.

“The risk is there. So avoid going to crowded places if possible, ”Vergeire said.

"The risk of airborne infection is enormous when we get to crowded places like what happened last weekend," Vergeire added.

The DOH admits that face masks and face shields do not protect people from the virus in crowded areas. Why would they do so in non-crowded areas?

With the oncoming Christmas season the ODH is expecting a surge of COVID-19 cases.

Government is bracing for a possible surge in coronavirus infections as the holiday season approaches, Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said late Monday night.

In President Rodrigo Duterte's weekly meeting with the coronavirus task force, the health chief said contingency measures will be up in the event that the said possibility takes place.

(DOH will be coming up with a contingency plan in the event of a post-holiday season surge in the number of cases. While the infections are slowing down, this shouldn't mean that we will be lax or complacent.)

The health department earlier today warned the public that flocking to crowded places even with face mask and shield on could still lead to infections.

It's more blaming the public for the spread of the virus even though the majority do follow protocol.

Dutetrte's response to the pandemic, and it is Duterte calling the shots, has been militaristic.  So of course he needs a healthy military and police force to combat the pandemic.

https://news.abs-cbn.com/news/11/24/20/duterte-says-need-for-healthy-police-military-in-covid-19-vaccine-rollout

Once the COVID-19 vaccine is available and ready for distribution in the Philippines, soldiers and the police should be among those given priority to be inoculated, President Rodrigo Duterte said Monday night.

Duterte in a public briefing, echoed his past statements for prioritizing police and military personnel when the country's vaccination starts, which may happen in May 2021.

"I need a healthy military and police kasi kapag magkasakit lahat 'yan, wala na ako maasahan, wala tayo mautusan," said the President, who heavily leans on retired military and police officers to lead government agencies.

Duterte called for understanding, saying the uniformed personnel are the "errand boys" of the public, citing their recent rescue efforts after consecutive typhoons barreled through the country.

"Kita naman ninyo 'yung baha sa Luzon. Kita ninyo military, Coast Guard, lahat na pumupunta doon, at pulis. And then they have to take care of the law and order situation. Huwag na ninyo masyado pahirapan 'yung pulis, wala naman kayong gawin. Matulog na lang kayo kaysa mag-inuman diyan tas magkagulo," he said.

The PNP and the AFP will be given priority when a vaccination comes.  But how exactly do they fight the virus?  By arresting people who don't wear masks?

The government's plan to vaccinate people is not necessarily to vaccinate everyone.

Inoculating more than half of the country's population against the coronavirus will be enough to create "herd immunity" but minimum health standards should still be observed, an infectious disease expert said Wednesday.

The Philippines plans to spend P73.2 billion to vaccinate 60 million Filipinos, officials earlier said.

A high efficacy rate is needed to immunize fewer Filipinos, according to Dr. Rontgene Solante, head of adult infectious disease at the San Lazaro Hospital.

(With that you’ll be able to achieve more than 50 percent of the population that will create an immunity even to those who have not received the vaccine because majority of the population is developing antibody so the virus can't spread.)

(We should still implement health protocols while we inoculate the public.)

Even though they plan to vaccinate only half the population it will sell be a monumental task which will take 3-5 years.

It will take three to five years before the Philippines can vaccinate its target of 60 million Filipinos against COVID-19, vaccine czar and pandemic response chief implementer Carlito Galvez Jr. said Wednesday.

“We will do this in a three- to five-year period kasi po ang kaya lang natin ma-vaccinate is more or less 20 to 30 million a year,” Galvez said in a televised briefing.

(We will do this in a three to five year period because we can only vaccinate more or less 20 to 30 million in a year.)

3 to 5 years. With the logistics involved and the need for cold storage which does not exist in the Philippines it might end up being a nightmare.

Picture of the Week: Trash Pit

I have written so much about garbage on this blog that you would think the subject has been exhausted. You would be wrong. Take a look at this:

This is a trash pit outside of a motorcycle shop. You might not be able to see it but there is plenty of oil mixed in with this garbage. So what's the deal?  The security guard I spoke too was not very forthcoming. But the picture speaks for itself. They should be bagging this trash so the truck can take it away. But they aren't. This pile gets bigger by the day.

Insurgency: Army Sponsors Baptism

The AFP is trying their hardest to win the hearts and minds of the people in order to end the insurgency. Most of this consists in bribing rebels with money, housing, and job training in hopes they will surrender. It also seems playing Godfather to ex-rebel's infants is part of that effort.

https://www.pna.gov.ph/articles/1121993

The babies of two former rebels of the Communist Party of the Philippines - New People’s Army (CPP-NPA) in southern Negros were baptized during the recent 47th founding anniversary rites of the Philippine Army’s 15th Infantry Battalion (IB).

Lt. Col. Erwin CariƱo, commander of 15IB, said on Monday sponsoring the baptism of the children is a privilege for them.

“Family is the bedrock of society and the 15IB is always ready to help them integrate into the community. Our former rebels are already part of the Molave Warrior family, and we are happy to see them transitioning to normal life,” CariƱo added.

Baptized were the 10-month-old baby and the second child of Albert Yanong alias “Butsoy”, and the two-month-old baby and first child of Ritchell Oray.

Before they surrendered earlier this year, Yanong was a platoon leader of the NPA’s North Negros Front and squad leader of SYP/SDG Platoon while Oray was a finance logistics officer of Squad 1, Platoon 1 of the South West Front.

Yanong thanked the troops for treating them like family and standing as godparents to their children.

Albert Yanong, one of the ex-rebels who baby was sponsored for baptism by the Army, surrendered back in May after spending 11 years in the NPA.

https://www.pna.gov.ph/articles/1104377

A 27-year-old man, a New People’s Army (NPA) combatant for 11 years, has voluntarily surrendered to Philippine Army troops in Cauayan, Negros Occidental, the 15th Infantry Battalion (15IB) reported on Friday.

The former rebel, identified as Albert Yanong Alon, alias “Butsoy”, was a platoon leader of the North Negros Front (NNF) and a squad leader of SYP/SDG Platoon of the southwest Front (SWF), operating in the area of Barangay Sangke in his hometown of Hinoba-an.

With 11 years in the NPA Albert's faith in the Catholic Church surely does not run too deep. How will the Army adequately fulfill the role of Godfather to these two infants? A Godparent is supposed to ensure the child grows up acquiring a religious education. How will the Army do that? It seems like a mockery of the whole rite.

However it works out a baptism with water is certainly better than a baptism by fire.

https://www.pna.gov.ph/articles/1122491

The active involvement of parents in the communist rebel movement can be a factor for their children's susceptibility to recruitment by the New People’s Army (NPA).

This was the case of Christian Montenegro Arreza, a young NPA combatant captured by the Army's 36th Infantry Battalion in an encounter in Surigao del Sur in May this year.

Arreza, together with another NPA surrenderer Cheryl Dalaguan, voluntarily appeared during the virtual press conference on former child warriors Thursday afternoon hosted by the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC) and the 401st Infantry Brigade (401Bde).

“I was recruited when I was at the young age of 17 in our village in Surigao del Sur. My father and mother were active members and supporters of the communist movement in our area,” Arreza said in the dialect.

The active members of the movement, even the NPA's regular fighters, frequented not only their village but also their home as his parents welcomed them.

Eventually, he said, the regular members became his acquaintances who recruited him to join the NPA.

“I was in the movement for more than three years serving as a political guide until I was captured by the Army last May 2020,” said Arreza, who is now 20-years-old.

The NPA is notorious for using child warriors in their operations. Recently papers were discovered detailing how this recruitment works as well as extortion efforts in Leyte.

https://www.pna.gov.ph/articles/1122178

The recent recovery of documents from the house of a suspected member of the New People’s Army (NPA) in an upland village in Carigara, Leyte has exposed the group’s activities to recruit minors, and extort money and food supplies from local government officials, businesses, and farmers.

The documents, posted online by the Philippine Army’s 802nd Infantry Brigade on Wednesday, show a handwritten report of an NPA member listing their sources of financial support. These include a major resort hotel and two big construction firms based in Ormoc City, Leyte.

Also listed are the internal revenue allotment of some remote villages in Carigara, Leyte, and "solicitation" to six mayors in Leyte province, which was not indicated in what way it was carried out.

“In the past, we heard a lot of hearsays about sources of NPA extortion funds, but it is only now that we got tangible evidence. A former rebel who surrendered to the military verified that these documents were written by one of their commanders,” said Capt. Karahudin Adil, the spokesperson of the Army’s 802nd Infantry Brigade.

Soldiers turned over these documents to the Philippine National Police as evidence for filing of possible charges against local officials tagged as sources of extortion money.

The handwritten documents also confirm the rebels’ goal to recruit 15- to 17-year-old members from remote communities in Leyte to compose the NPA’s young communist league.

“These documents reaffirm that the NPA has been recruiting minors in Leyte. Recently, we also found textbooks on revolutionary underground mass movement and bomb-making manual meant for young recruits,” Adil added.

Soldiers recovered the documents on Nov. 13 from the house of suspected NPA members Edencio and his wife Nora Dionaldo.

Government troops also rescued the couple’s seven children, including five minors, and recovered war materiel from the house.

Some of those documents can be viewed on the 802nd ID's Facebook page. Hopefully those who are named as having paid NPA extortion fees will face raps.  The NPA is very active in Leyte. The AFP is trying to hold them back from regaining former strongholds in the region.

https://www.pna.gov.ph/articles/1122290

The Philippine Army is deploying more soldiers in remote communities to block the campaign of the New People’s Army (NPA) to recover former strongholds in Carigara, Leyte.

Lt. Col. Roberto Beatisula, commander of the Army’s 93rd Infantry Battalion, said they were acting on reports of civilians on sightings of armed men in remote areas.

"NPA members have moved to the mountains of Carigara after we cleared their infiltrated areas in Ormoc City and Kananga, Leyte. We are optimistic to clear Carigara villages before the year ends," Beatisula said in a phone interview late Wednesday.

To achieve their goal, the military asked village officials to make their local task forces on ending local communist armed conflict (ELCAC) functional and provide information on the whereabouts of rebels.

With the recovery of those papers it seems the NPA is on the up-and-up in Leyte. Never forget that Leyte was declared insurgent free in 2011.

“The AFP through the IPSP Bayanihan liberated 23 provinces from the CPP-NPA-NDF influence, with their internal security operations turned over to their respective local government units,” the military said.

The provinces are Apayao, Ifugao, Kalinga, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Nueva Ecija, Aurora, Biliran, Cebu, Bohol, Camiguin, Misamis Oriental, South Cotabato, La Union, Pangasinan, Tarlac, Cavite, Marinduque, Romblon, Guimaras, Siquijor and Leyte and Southern Leyte.
“We can’t say there’s zero presence but we can say that it is no longer significant,” Burgos said.
Only “less than 5,000” NPA rebels remain in the countryside waging their decadeslong revolution, he said.

https://philippinefails.blogspot.com/2019/09/martial-law-insurgent-free.html

Maybe the AFP will clear the area of NPA rebels but history is not on their side.

Speaking of history two men are the first to be charged under the new Anti-Terror Law.

https://www.rappler.com/nation/aetas-zambales-accused-shooting-soldiers-jailed-first-case-anti-terrorism-law-november-2020

Japer Gurung and Junior Ramos were charged with terrorism on September 14 before an Olongapo City court, the charge sheet showed. The charge sheet was contained in a manifestation filed by the National Union of Peoples' Lawyers (NUPL) before the Supreme Court on Wednesday, November 18.

Gurung and Ramos are still detained, according to NUPL president Edre Olalia. Terrorism under Section 4 of Republic Act No. 11479 is non-bailable.

Olalia said Gurung and Ramos were also charged separately with illegal possession of firearms and explosives, which is also non-bailable.

Gurung and Ramos were charged under Section 4(a) of RA 11479 which punishes a person who "engages in acts intended to cause death or serious bodily injury to any person, or endangers a person's life."

Based on the charge sheet, signed by Associate Provincial Prosecutor Ritchie John Distor BolaƱo, the two Aetas are also accused under other provisions of RA 11479 like causing intimidation to the general public, spreading a message of fear, and seriously undermining public safety.

Gurung and Ramos were accused of firing at members of the 73rd Infantry Division on August 21, resulting in the death of Sergeant Rudil Dilao.

The NUPL said the soldiers planted guns and explosives on the two Aetas.

"(They were) evacuating due to intense military operations and continued bombings in their ancestral lands. They were accosted by elements of the 73rd Infantry Division of the Philippine Army, firearms and explosives planted on them, and falsely accused of being members of the New People’s Army (NPA)," the NUPL said in its manifestation to the Supreme Court.

"Some of the victims were tortured, fed with human feces, and were later charged with violation of Section 4(a) of RA 11479, among other crimes," the manifestation said.

Olalia said that two other female Aetas were charged with illegal possession of firearms and explosives and are also still detained.

"The available facts and circumstances we received so far from our colleagues in NUPL-Central Luzon indicate that the charges were a way of reprisal against unarmed civilians (indigenous people) for the death of a soldier in an alleged encounter with the NPAs in the area," Olalia said.

Being the first it is definitely a historical case. The details, however, seem convoluted. These men are charged with shooing at the AFP and killing one soldier. The NUPL says the AFP planted firearms on them and tortured them by feeding them feces. Who knows what the truth is? Hopefully the truth comes out in court. It is strange that these are the first men charged under the new law and the public was not informed until two months later.

Aside from these two men charged in court and any others who will be charged under the new law the AFP has formed their 1st legal action team against the NPA.

A legal action team that will add teeth to the government’s campaign against the Communist Party of the Philippines -New People’s Army (CPP-NPA) has been formed in Western Visayas.

In a media briefing on Tuesday, Maj. Cenon Pancito III, spokesperson for the 3rd Infantry Division (3ID) of the Philippine Army (PA), said the “Joint Focused Legal Action Team (JFLAT)” has been formed by the Legal Cooperation and Peace, Law Enforcement and Development Support (PLEDS) Clusters of the Regional Task Force in Ending Local Communist Armed Conflict 6 (RTF-ELCAC 6).

He said the JFLAT Team has gathered 124 judicial affidavits of former rebels from Western Visayas composed of 53 from Capiz; 21 from Antique; five from Iloilo; and 45 from Negros Occidental.

“Same will be used for our legal offensives against the CTGs (communist terrorist groups). It has been our experience that we are not pursuing the NPAs legally. With JFLAT, we shall be able to take our positions even in court,” he said.

Pancito believed that the presence of the team will “surely hasten our anti-insurgency efforts particularly on legal aspect”.

“This will likewise help sustain our gains now that the law enforcement agencies together with the Legal Cooperation Cluster are in full force in defeating the CTGs,” he said.

This seems like something that should have been done long ago. Maybe it will yield results, maybe not. But if the AFP has evidence of who is doing what then this will be the perfect time to present it and bring them to justice.

The God Culture: "Solomon's Treasure" Preliminary Book Review

Timothy Jay Schwab of The God Culture has recently dropped quite a load indicating that he and they have entered the next stage of their journey. From an unknown Youtube channel to full-blown think tank in the space of three years. Tim's videos have been aimed at teaching Filipinos they are Israelites and that the Philippines is Sheba, Ophir, Tarshish, Haviliah, and the Garden of Eden. Actually the Garden of Eden is submerged in the Sulu Sea along with its only inhabitant Enoch. Does the ocean water quench the flaming sword of the Cherubim who guards it?

Filipinos have a big destiny to fill because they will literally fight the anti-christ face to face and restore the Mosaic Law around the world. The OFW program is Bible prophecy! In fact 144,000 Filipino women will be taken to heaven to give birth in the throne room of God to 144,000 babies who will come back seven years later with Jesus Christ as a heavenly choir.  If one does not understand this restoration of Bible geography which gives the Philippines the most preeminent place in all of history and prophecy then one will never, ever understand the Bible. So says The God Culture founder former puppeteer, Christian rock band member, and ordained Reverend Timothy Jay Schwab.

https://www.ophirinstitute.com

You are about to embark on the most monumental journey of all archaeological discoveries. The mother lode that would make the likes of Indiana Jones salivate. The true land of gold in all of history which leads to the location of the Garden of Eden and Land of Creation identifying the Rivers from Eden en route. Why is this important? You will never understand geography, history nor especially Bible prophecy without this restored knowledge of what many will consider the most illustrious realm on Earth. Without this, one cannot interpret archaeology with mastery, lecture on history with certainty, preach a sermon on the topic with veracity nor even satisfy elementary queries. Though founded in the Bible which is the origin of this saga, examine the history, archaeology, geography, science, linguistics, etc. which all converge to reveal what the world knew and somehow misplaced about a century ago. This is a mystery no longer and now, you will know the whereabouts of the lost isles of gold...

You can't even preach a truthful sermon without knowing this information! Think of all the sermons preached in the past 2,000 years by Christians of every kind and in every era. Jesus Christ, the Apostle Paul, Peter, John, James, St. John Chrysostom, St. Augustine, Athanasius, Basil the Great, Charles Finney, Charles Spurgeon, Charles Stanely they and all the rest were shut up in darkness because no one in the history of the Church had this information until NOW!

So much for Pentecost and the Church being led of the Holy Spirit into all truth and the gates of Hell not prevailing against the Church. Turns out the Church has been in darkness all this time and God has sent his servant Timothy Jay Schwab to bring us all into the light. The Church owes Timothy a great debt. I am joking of course. Timothy is no servant of God but a heretic who denies the Trinity and preaches "the law is what redeems us." Tim is no way a Christian though he pretends to be one. The thesis of this book is as fictional as Indiana Jones who is alluded to not just on the back cover but also in the introduction on page 19.

I know what's on page 19 of this book without having read it because there is a preview feature on Amazon. Having performed several word searches there is much to say about this book before I have even read it. I would like to take note of just a few things here.

Basically this book will be a rehash of what's in Tim's videos. Just from a perusal of what's available I say with confidence that I have been completely vindicated in all my criticisms of The God Culture. I will list only two.

1. In the video Clue #53 Finding Chryse Tim purports to cite from Dionysius Periegetes. But instead he quotes him secondhand and get's it all wrong. Based on the source he provided I had surmised that he lifted it from "Phoenicians in the Lands of Gold" by J.G. Cheock who cites Dionysius on page 7 and lists the same source as Tim on page 130 of that book.

It turns out that Tim has read "Phoenicians in the Lands of Gold" because Cheock is listed as a source in the index.

We see here Tim's profound scientific method of providing secondhand quotes. Instead of going to Cheock's source, Rebecca Catz, Tim prefers to cite Cheock!

As far as Dionysus goes it was I who did the research to find an English translation by Thomas Twyne in the EEBO database. Tim had no idea it existed until I came along. Tim now claims to be using that translation as his source rather then Cheock. But he does not cite Thomas Twyne as a primary source.  Instead he cites Check's source which is literally a middle school teacher's teaching module!

"Monsoon Winds to the "Land of Gold" is a teaching module for middle schoolers. The teaching module can be accessed here. It will open as a PDF in a new tab.

This citation is interesting because from what I can gather on page 41 Tim actually quotes the Twyne translation. However Tim conflates the Thomas Twyne translation with this module on which Twyne is never mentioned. The English translations on that module come from two other and different sources as each quote is the same verse from Dionysius translated differently.

Imagine writing a book that is supposed to be throughly tested, claiming you have a monumental case no one can disprove, that you have a profound scientific method to prove this case, and that what you are writing is not merely a claim but absolute truth and one of your proofs comes from a middle school teacher's module. Imagine further that you have access to the original source, though it be an English translation, and you still decide to use the module as your official source. That is completely laughable. No serious person would do that. I am dumbfounded at this choice as it makes NO sense! But it is in line with Tim's "profound scientific method" of secondhand quoting.

It should be noted that the module purports to teach about Southeast Asian trade in ancient times and nowhere is the Philippines mentioned.

I don't have space here to get into it further. I have written extensively about this faulty citation elsewhere and I encourage you to read it at this link: The God Culture: Finding Chryse: Don't Follow Biased Paradigms.

2. The second instance where I have been vindicated is in Tim's use of Legeza, Peralta, and Villegas as sources proving that the Philippines traded with ancient Egypt and that Philippine gold has been found in Egypt. Again, I have written at length about how Tim had never read those sources and was even citing one of them incorrectly. In my curiosity I actually ordered the documents from Arts of Asia and posted my findings online.

Timothy Jay Schwab and The God Culture knew NOTHING of what those authors actually wrote until I came along. Naturally they are using my research to further their goals. Take a look at the source list in the index:

Look at how he uses Wikipedia as a source for #22! There are other instances of Wikipedia being used as a source throughout the book.

Note that in this book Peralta is not cited at all. That is because, as I wrote elsewhere he does not discuss trade with Egypt. Only Legeza and Villegas mention Egypt. This citation lists page 137 as being quoted from Legeza but that does not seem to be the case.  Here are the citations as found on page 44.

I am quite confident that this is all my research. There is a sourcebook available that will have all the documents. We shall see if Tim actually ordered the out-of-print Arts of Asia magazine that has this article as surely he will have included the pages in the sourcebook. Either way it was I who finally opened up Legeza, Peralta, and Villegas. Tim and The God Culture had no idea what they actually wrote until I came along. Read more at: The God Culture: Philippine Gold Jewelry Found in 1st Century Egypt.

Based on these two instances it seems I was correct when I wrote the following back in June:
I cannot wait for this book to be published. It looks like it will be big, glossy, and colorful with many pictures. It will be fun to see what exactly is inside. I predict Tim will use my own research which is the English translation of Dionysius Periegetes and the three sources cited to claim Philippine gold was found in 1st century Egypt.  That would be Legeza, Peralta, and Villegas. Tim did not know about any of those resources until I used them in my rebuttals to him.
Of course with Tim taking liberally from other bloggers left and right such as Ancient Philippines as sources for his videos it wasn't that hard of a prediction to make. Funny how they vilify me and yet use my research.

One more thing about what is in the book and that is it appears that Tim makes a passing reference to me on page 45.

"We had one question the "belief" of Adrian Horridge...."
That is most certainly a reference to me as I wrote about what Horridge wrote and how he does not say what Tim thinks he says. You can read more about that at: The God Culture: Does Timothy Schwab Have A Missionary Visa?

No doubt "Solomon's Treasure" will be an interesting book. Even more interesting will be reading any critical reviews. Surely I cannot be the only person who has dissected Tim's videos. Books have a way of making the rounds more so than videos especially a series of videos that is hundreds of hours long. Hopefully this book makes its way into the hands of real scholars and they can give it a proper thrashing.

Having a sourcebook to go along with Solomon's Treasure is a pretty nifty idea.

However in order to access it you have to buy Solomon's Treasure and then register somehow.  I have scoured all their websites and there is no information on how to register. Maybe that information will come with the book.

This SOURCEBOOK is free for those who purchase The Search for King Solomon's Treasure, The Search for King Solomon's Treasure: Instructional Edition and/or Ophir Philippines Coffee Table Book. There is no availability for those wishing to review a Sourcebook without actually reading. You may purchase the books at: Ophirinstitute.com.

We reserve the right to reject access to those who cyber libel.

I assume that last sentence is a reference to me as well because Tim and The God Culture have libelously accused me of cyber libel on several occasions. At the bottom of the list of sources there is a rather snarky comment.

(Yeah, we know, we didn't do any research and are just guessing right? What an illiterate position of scoffers who wallow in ignorance.)

https://www.thegodculture.com/source-list

I for one never made such a statement. What I have said repeatedly is that Tim misuses and misinterprets his sources, has not read some of them, and liberally quotes secondhand without referring to the originals. Here is what Tim has to say about his sources especially Thomas Suarez who actually made it into Tim's book as an official source as part of the "Monumental Case For The Philippines No One Can Disprove."

Suarez is wrong. We do not quote his conclusions because they are ignorant and loaded with propaganda as well and we do not consider him a true scholar as he tows the Rothschild line inheriting such from the likes of Samuel Purchas who was employed by the East India Company specifically to hack up this topic as a matter of record and confuse people with propaganda.

https://philippinefails.blogspot.com/2020/03/the-god-culture-philippine-gold-jewelry.html?showComment=1584195525058#c7011209112326719045

Why even bother with sources when Tim says outright he does not believe them? Why cite them as authorities?

The real problem with these sources is that they form Tim's entire case. He has done ZERO archeological work. Instead he has taken texts both ancient and modern and deduced from them the solution to the ancient mystery of the identity of Ophir. He is an armchair researcher and not a real archaeologist like Ron Wyatt who, whether you agree with his findings or not, actually went into the field to prove his claims. Same with Heinrich Schliemann who discovered Troy by leaving his study and going into the field to dig. Even the fictional Indiana Jones Tim references goes into the field to find an artifact wether it be the Cross of Coronado, the Ark of the Covenant, or the Holy Grail. Tim has no artifacts to prove his case. He only has these texts and his deductions many of which, such as his identification of the Chersonesus Aurea as the Philippines, are wrong.

Another thing Tim gets wrong is trade between the Philippines and Israel via the southern tip of Africa. On page 136 Tim writes the following:

Therefore, Ophir had to bring goods to Israel instead which we see in Jonah's story. The ships of Tarshish were certainly trading in Israel again traveling the long way around Africa to the port at Joppa (Jn. 1:1-3) as did the Three Kings after Messiah's birth in about 6 B.C. or so.

While Herodotus does record a single instance of Africa being circumnavigated by the Phoenicians his account is doubted by some. In any case ancient Greek maps do not show much of sub-Saharan Africa, certainly not the southern tip of Africa, and it was Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias who made the first documented voyage around Africa in 1488. The fact is that until modern times this route was rarely taken if ever. Yet Tim expects us all to believe that there was a robust trade between the Philippines and Israel with the route circumnavigating Africa over 2,000 years ago. Such prattle is obvious nonsense not supported by any facts except the ones Tim fabricates by grossly misinterpreting Horridge, Legeza, and Villegas.

As I said there is so much I can write about this book already without having read it. For instance Timothy Jay Schwab's "Monumental Case For The Philippines No One Can Disprove" includes such authoritative sources as Wikipedia and some dude's blog.

Two of the many citations from Wikipedia

http://genesavoy.blogspot.com

Yes, that is really in the list of sources in the index. Why!?

I will leave just one more tidbit indicative of the kind of deception that will be in this book as it is in The God Culture's videos. It comes from Chapter 3 page 33.

That is not Greece but the Acropolis ruins in Fortune Island of Nagsugbu, Batangas, Philippines.

Wrong! Those are not the ruins of a Greek Acropolis at all. Rather it's the ruins of a resort for the very rich.

The island only later in time got the name it has today. A few decades ago it used to serve as a very exclusive luxury resort designed to serve the upper class of society. By that time it was actually called 'Little Paradise' according to the locals.

Because it was designed for the upper class, the creators thought it was fitting to make the resort in ancient Greek style. They built a replica of the Greek Acropolis of Athens on top of a lime stone cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. In today's time, the structure still serves as the island's main landmark.

Surely Tim knows that those aren't actual Greek ruins right? He cannot be that dumb. After all his biography, which is spread across several pages, makes mention of a profound scientific method used by The God Culture in doing their research.

It's just pure deception as the uncritical reader will think that there are actually Grecian ruins in the Philippines. It's the same tactic he pulled with Greek armor allegedly being found in Mindanao. You can read more about that here:  The God Culture: Ancient Greek Armor Found In Mindanao

When I receive this book I will not be reviewing it by ripping it to shreds source-by-source. I have already proven that Tim's claims are nonsense and that he is totally dishonest with his sources. Never forget Timothy Jay Schwab is also a heretic who denies the Trinity and is on record saying "the law is what redeems us." Instead I want to compare "Solomon's Treasure" to a book titled "My Country's Godly Heritage: The History of the Philippines In Biblical Perspective" by Ferdinand V. Melendres.

I have yet to read this book but the author appears to have a similar thesis to Timothy Schwab and The God Culture. It will be interesting to see where the two converge and diverge. This author and book do not show up in a search of Tim's book nor have I heard him mention it in any of his videos. I wonder if he knows it exists.

Retards in the Government 181

It's your weekly compendium of foolishness and corruption in the Philippine government.

https://cebudailynews.inquirer.net/350424/ex-barangay-councilor-shot-dead-in-barili-suspect-arrested

Police in Barili town, southwestern Cebu arrested this morning, November 12, 2020, the prime suspect in the killing of a former village councilor who was shot dead inside his store in Barangay Mantalongon, Barili, Cebu on Wednesday night.

Jay Lito Salva Bendanillo, 41, a resident of Barangay Bolocboloc of the same town, is now facing murder charges after he was arrested past 9 this morning following a hot pursuit operation in Barangay Candabong, Dumanjug.

Bendanillo was positively identified by witnesses as the one who shot Porferio Carazo Reyes Jr, 52, a resident of Barangay Balao, Barili, and a former village councilor of the said barangay.

Police Corporal Michael Villardar, of the Barili Police Station, said that Bendanillo was arrested after a hot pursuit operation following the shooting incident.

Police said that as Reyes was preparing to cook dinner inside his store in Barangay Mantalongon on Wednesday night, Bendanillo suddenly arrived and shot the victim several times.

Reyes, according to police, was able to grab a bolo and hacked Bendanillo hitting him on the arm. But the suspect fired again hitting Reyes who slumped bloodied to the ground. Witnesses rushed Reyes to the hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

Police said jealousy could be the motive behind the fatal shooting as Bendanillo reportedly has a long-standing grudge with Reyes whom he suspected of having an affair with his partner.

An ex-barangay councilor was shot in his kitchen while preparing dinner. He was able to hack his attacker with a bolo before he died. Jealousy over a love affair might be the motive.

Three government officials are offering more than PHP1 million cash reward to anyone who can provide information leading to the arrest of the killer of a former barangay official in Guipos town.

Gov. Victor Yu and his wife, first district Rep. Divina Grace, said Thursday they are offering up to PHP1 million, while Mayor Ruel Molina of Kumalarang town offers PHP50,000 to any informant who can help solve the killing of Jemar Pintac, 42.

Pintac and his son, Mark Anthony, were supervising a road construction project in Guipos town when shot and killed around 3 p.m. on November 5.

This is the first time hearing about this story. It appears the murder of ex-village chief Jemar Pinta was reported in only one source and his status as an ex-village chief was not noted.

https://www.philstar.com/headlines/2020/11/14/2056758/flooding-metro-could-have-been-prevented-coa

“Various projects were not completed/implemented within the specific contract time due to inadequate planning and absence of coordination mechanism with the other concerned agencies and stakeholders, which hindered the MMDA in attaining its objective to mitigate flooding in the metropolis,” a COA report read.

Based on the COA’s 2019 annual audit report on the MMDA released last Sept. 30, of the 108 programmed flood control projects of the agency for 2019 totaling P1.1 billion, only 45.37 percent or 49 projects amounting to P453.242 million were completed as of yearend.

But Baltazar Melgar, chief of the MMDA’s Flood Control and Sewerage Management Office (FCSMO), told The STAR  that the projects cited by COA were “completed this year.”

“The said projects are only minor ones like improvement of drainage, riprapping and rehabilitation of waterways leading to our pumping stations,” he said.

“The completion of these projects was delayed because the approval of the GAA (General Appropriations Act) was also delayed, and there was an election ban,” he said.

The COA says the MMDA was lax in implementing loos control projects but they say that is not the case. In their defense they cite an election ban on public works. This ban is implemented every election season for about 45 days. The reason for the ban is:

The prohibition is aimed at preventing government officials from using government resources and facilities to influence the voters in their choices for national and local elective positions.

Just another instance how government corruption hurts the people.

https://newsinfo.inquirer.net/1361719/commissions-from-govt-projects-ignite-tiff-among-zambo-sur-allies

Two years after closing ranks against a common political enemy, Zamboanga del Sur Gov. Victor Yu and 2nd District Rep. Leonardo Babasa are breaking up their alliance due to a quarrel over commissions from government projects, another ally revealed.

Governor Yu and his wife, 1st District Rep. Divina Yu, have confirmed a falling out between them and Babasa due to the latter’s unfulfilled promise that the couple would decide whom to award national government-funded projects for his district.

These revelations sprouted as public works projects were put on the spotlight for alleged corruption that President Duterte vowed to stamp out in his remaining days in office.

Kumalarang town mayor Ruel Molina spilled the beans about the roots of the political quarrel after he felt alluded to by Representative Yu as having a hand in the killing of a former village official, who initiated an administrative case that led to his preventive suspension last month.

After winning as mayor in 2019, Molina allegedly pressured the village chief and six council members of Barangay Mahayahay to resign so his protege, the 7th councilman, can head the village.

Molina said the Yu couple was bent on controlling the “SOP of projects” even in Babasa’s district.

Long story short, and it is long, there was a political alliance between to families where one would be able to dictate who got what DWPH projects. A rather mundane and typical portrait of the endemic corruption in the government.

https://newsinfo.inquirer.net/1362103/palace-spare-tire-robredo-made-it-appear-she-was-in-charge

MalacaƱang on Wednesday said that Vice President Leni Robredo became the most recent target of President Rodrigo Duterte’s tirades because she made it appear that she was in charge of typhoon response efforts.

A visibly irritated Duterte started his weekly talk to the nation by falsely calling Robredo “dishonest” for supposedly claiming he was absent during Typhoon Ulysses’ onslaught.

Robredo never issued any remark asking for Duterte’s whereabouts when Ulysses wreaked havoc and caused massive flooding over parts of the country, only of real-time updates via her Twitter account when several netizens asked for helpfollowing massive flooding in Cagayan and Isabela due to Typhoon Ulysses.

But presidential spokesperson Harry Roque made an issue out of Robredo’s “postings.”

“And of course, her Twitter posts making it appear that she was the one calling the shots at the time of the typhoon was completely out of order…. And the President said, under the Constitutional scheme, the Vice President is a spare tire and when Ulysses struck, he (Duterte) was in charge,” he added.

It's really awful how the administration continues to kick Robredo no matter what she does. It's awful that they cannot all work together as they should. Just one more reason the nation remains the way it is.

https://newsinfo.inquirer.net/1362463/2-after-gordon-threatens-to-block-budget-duque-admits-corruption-in-past-doh-dealings

Health Secretary Francisco Duque III acknowledged on Wednesday that there was “corruption” in some of the previous dealings of the Department of Health (DOH) after Sen. Richard Gordon threatened to block the approval of the department’s budget.

In 2016, the DOH and J. Bros Construction signed a P3.5-billion contract to establish barangay health stations in public elementary schools.

The contract indicated that 3,200 stations should be built for the first phase of the program.

But when J. Bros Construction submitted its notice of termination of contract in March 2018 to the DOH it demanded payment of P2.1 billion for accomplishing the first and second phases of the project.

But the DOH had previously said that only 270 stations were built, which Gordon reiterated during the deliberations.

Sen. Pia Cayetano, who sponsored the DOH budget, said the department would want to follow the ruling of the Court of Appeals, which directed the agency to pay the private contractor for the 270 completed units and “whatever the [Commission on Audit] decides is due to the contractor based on quantum merit.”

Further, Cayetano said the DOH had terminated the contract with the contractor.

The DOH also blacklisted the contractor, “but such a decision was overturned” by a Manila Regional Trial Court (RTC), according to Cayetano.

“Thus, the DOH, with the [Office of the Solicitor General] is questioning this RTC decision. This case is pending before the RTC of Manila,” Cayetano added.

But Gordon said: “I am shocked. This is really swindling the country… Those people are really daring. So what are you doing about it, Secretary Duque? What are you and your lawyers doing about it?”

“Do you agree that there was corruption here?” he asked. “‘There’s corruption.’ I want that on the record as stated by the Department of Health.”

At lest Duque admits there has been corruption within the DOH. For whatever that is worth.
